Medium scale basses - whats worth buying?
fretmeister replied to shoulderpet's topic in Bass Guitars
I've not tried E-C but I don't see any reason it wouldn't work well. A vid I did just to show how good the low notes are. Flatwounds (which are often a bit pony for low B) and only iphone audio but it comes across ok. Excuse the playing! It picked up a bit of finger noise as I was too close to the phone. -
Medium scale basses - whats worth buying?

I have 2 of the Ibanez Mezzo basses and they are fantastic. I bought the first on a bit of a whim and I'm massively impressed with it - and not just for the money. Mine are 5 strings and the low B is easily as good as my Stingray 5. Only downsides is that the preamp is a bit limited. There's a big thread on the other place about modifications and pickup changes. As it happens I am selling one of them (I need to pay for a PS5) but the other is going nowhere. It has become my main bass despite my Sandberg / Stingray etc. Definitely worth you trying one out. -
Plugin Alliance stuff. https://www.plugin-alliance.com/ They have some great stuff but are expensive so this is a great offer. I've gone for the HG-2 satchurator which can be used for everything but I'm going to try it on vocals.

I do this too, but all inside my helix. Helix is also an 8 in / 8 out interface and USB 7 defaults to being just the di signal. I play with helix tones for no latency and also alway record the di track at the same time. Hen I either reamp in helix, or native, or in a different plugin.

Prince at the O2. Pantera at the first UK Ozzfest Hugh Laurie and the Copper Bottom Band (yes really) at the New Theatre in Oxford. -

Boss BC-1X Compressor. I love it. -
https://neuraldsp.com/ 50% off until the 30th November. Discount stacks with existing customer discounts too. Lots of guitar plugins of course, but also the plugin versions of the Darkglass VMTDU and the B7KU. Some of the clean guitar amps are rather good for bass use as well. Time limited free trial is available on all of them to test them out.

I ripped it all out of my TT4 Superlight, but replaced it with EMG J set (the original type) and a 3 band. The Originals were designed to sound like trad J pickups but without the hum. They are a lot more restrained than the X versions or the dual coils. Probably why Bobby Vega loves them so much. Those, with some flats and it's perfect for my needs.

WASP - The Real Me. As much as I love The Who and JE, Johnny Rod did better on this version.

Your choice for Bass Amps to include in Modeler
fretmeister replied to Tubster's topic in Amps and Cabs
Not anymore. Modern ones model the entire signal path down to component level rather than the sound. So within the code they can change a resistor value in the ‘circuit’ if they want. -
If it’s a black plate then just use one of those tiny webcam stickers to cover the hole. Or leave an unconnected pot there.
-
Go passive as well. Use 250k pots. 500k are likely to be too bright.

I'd like one of these 22.5 inch scale. Marleaux Soprano.

I love Sandberg but those pickups are horrible. Aguilar 60s wind replacement and a 250 pot set will do it.

Amplitude free will do this, and do amp sims and will import from iTunes

I'd love something like this, but it will be too heavy for me, alas.

BEAD tuning is quite popular. Sometimes even lower these days. It's not dangerous at all. Just get it set up right. Sometimes it's easier to get a new nut and keep the old one for putting back on in case you ever want to sell it.

I love the original EMG J pickups. I put a set in my Sandberg. Great J tone and completely hum free.

I agree. I've had a go on the Shuriken guitar with a helix and it was amazing. Jazz box to Tele to Les Paul all with the click of a footswitch. Then - footswitch control of tunings - even individual strings, and it can also turn off strings as well if they get in the way for some parts. If only this was available to us bass players!

It's a different type of processing. Even for guitar use the variax is still for sale (and the Shuriken one seems to be popular) because the unit itself cannot do what you want without the special bridge and the on-guitar processing. The bridge is needed because each string is processed individually within the instrument. Cannot do that with normal pickups. Helix will control most variax guitars but I don't think it can control the bass one as the tech is now too old. So even if you do the guts transplant it won't do anything more than it did before. It appears there is not enough interest for a new bass variax. They didn't sell a lot the first time round.
