1. That is a truly unique looking bass. And I want one. Congrats,Gust0o.
2. BC is great fun, informative, supportive, and full of wonderfull people. Mods and admin folk, well done. You have helped to make BC the joy that I hope it will always be.
3. Breakthrough at last!Rehearsed with the beastie last night, and it felt great.I've put a Mono strap on it,and just persevered. For everyones info, the problem was with the body rather than the neck(odd,I know).I could'nt find a position where there was'nt uncomfortabler preassure on my forearm. After some strap height adjustment'and repositioning the stap button higher up(like a Specter. This makes the neck lift giving IMHO a better playing position) things have settled down. Jezza,I was playing a Status Groove before, which has a smaller body.I can get used to necks quickly,it's the body that causes me grief!I can't play anything without decent contouring on it. Badboy,I may get a J neck at some point, but for now I'll carry on with what I've got. Thanks to everyone for your advice.
4. Having got myself a P style bass, and publicly stating on BC that it is the Lurchers Landing Gear,I'm now finding that it's,well, uncomfortable. Either the fretting hand is comfy,or the plucking hand. I've wanted a Precision type bass for a while now,and am feeling worried that something so right is becoming wrong. All suggestions gratefully recieved(except ones that say "grow some balls and just play the thing, weedy boy").
5. I do the "Bass players chicken head dance".
6. JHS Tony Butler.My first P-bass,and a definate keeper.
7. It looks really good "in the raw". Don't colour it,keep it natural!
8. As a new member of the P-bass owners collective,I thought I would give you a quick overview of this bass. I have never owned, and hardly ever played a Precision style bass before,so I only had online reviews to go by before I bought the bass(£299 from Rose Morris Music,London). First up,a warning for all those who are, like me,a shortarse;IT FEELS BIG!If you are currently using an Ibanez,a Bass Collection Speakeasy of similar, prepare for a shock. That said,it just feels "right". Neck. 10/10. The neck is maple, with a well cut plastic nut and Wilkinson(not the cut price store!)tuners. It's a bit of a stretch after smaller width necks(my other bass is a Status Groove)but feels, after a weeks, spot on. There are no sharp fret ends,or high spots,so tops marks here. Body 10/10. Black gloss,black/white/black guard, well finished.'Nuff said. Hardware 9/10. A trad Fender stlye bridge with brass saddles, solid controls that turn smoothly, good tuners. But pickup screws that are quite soft(I've rounded one off adjusting the pup heights already)so only 9/10. Sound 9/10.(Using Fender flats,50-100,through a Markbass LMII and 2x12 cab.Tone set Low,Low mid,High, all flat,High mid at 9 o/clock.All filters off). Wilkinson own brand pups here.As I said before,I have rarely touched this type of bass before,so I can only tell you this;solo, the sound is deep with pronounced mids. With a band, every note is clear, with strong lows, and sits well with other instruments. "Chunky"is how a guitar playing mate described it at a rehearsal! I can only give 9/10 as I have no other P bass to compare it to.But it does everything that ! need it to. With the tone rolled off,it thuds nicely.Roll it up,and the mids bite! Overview. Straight from the box, this played well with no adjustment to the action or intonation needed. A P-bass can be endlessly modified until it becomes Triggers broom, but there is little I would want to do to this one. Hmm,perhaps some cream pickup covers........
9. I've put flats on it now........mmmmmmmmm!
10. I bought an ESP LTD Vintage 204 recently. On arrival I noticed the nut was poorly cut,and when I got it home, the tone control did'nt work. I returned it immediately and swapped it for a JHS bass. The one I had may have been a one-off,but I will not consider an ESP again.
11.
Hope it sounded as good as it felt without the amp when I looked at it earlier . Happy new bass day
It does(only through a practice amp so far)! My first journey into the world of P-bass so I don't know quite what to expect, but I know it feels "right"when you play it,and has a lot more low prescence than the Status. Consider me a convert!
12. I've joined the club! JHS Vintage Tony Butler Signature.
13.
Also I have been known to wear toe rings and ankle jewellry, which I gather from another thread is beyond the pale.
Thats not ankle jewellery,it's a tag!Do you have an ASBO(Awful Sounding Bass Order)? I'm not joining this club;it's full of oiks and commoners .Moderator, release the hounds........
14.
I'm in based on playing a Fender Precision in a Covers Band, and shameless with it.
Burberry finish, with a gold chain strap from Argos?
15. Just fitted a set of these in medium light(50,65,85,100)to my Status and(so far) I am impressed. I had to re-cut the G string slot on the nut due to an awful buzz where the string passed over the zero fret, but once that was done everything settled down. The tension feels fairly even over the set, there is no "twang" from the G,and the sound is pleasently "mellow". So far I've only played through a practice amp,so when I'm back in the rehearsal room I'll give them a proper work out. Why did I try them?£19.99,thats why!
16. Bluer than a top shelf magazine!
17. And it's very good. Now onto Gold by Ryan Adams.
18.
No, no..! Don't look..! Avert your delicate feminine gaze from the horrors that have gone on before..! (Quickly..! Smelling salts, someone... Oh, dear; too late, she's swooned again. Allergic to swede, maybe..?...)
'Tis only an attack of the vapours.Simply wave anything by the Brontes or Jane Austin under her nose and she'll soon be ok.
19. Can we have more of the nice gentleman in the suit playing the saxophone.I was really enjoying it.Honest, all 7 minutes of it.
20. I like to write the initial line, but am quite happy to let any other member of the band suggest alternatives, After all,a band is a team, and we all work to make the song sound the best it can be. I like to use the formula Doc Pomeroy wrote in a bass mag years ago(it was an article about playing Country sessions);think of the simplest thing you can play, then reduce it by half!
21. Blessed by Lucinda Williams(1st listen)
22. Tattoo by Rory Gallagher.Gerry MacAvoy is such a solid player. No frills,no fuss, propels the song. Snap by The Jam.The best of album that shows the best of a top bass player.Movement and attack.
23. Could be a new thread;Pimp my shi*e bass! Now,what can I get on Ebay..........?
