1. I will be with Mark from Bass Direct on his stall Saturday and Sunday so do drop by and say hello! :-)
2. Hey Shep, As I am a lazy bugger, What's the RMS and Ohm rating dude? Also - weight etc.
3. I'm normally DI'd out the back of my amp and leave it clean for the engineer to mix. I always say what sound I'm going after but then leave it in the hands of the engineer to perfect. With my tribute band a lot of my tone is through my style (Black Sabbath, so my right hand is normally over the 24th fret marker, for those Black Sabbath fans, you'll know what sound that is!!!) so with my EQ flat I can normally achieve it quite well. Get a lot of compliments for my tone! With my death metal band it is a lot harder to get a good tone live. In fact, I HAVE to insist on a bit more of a toppy sound just to cut through the guitars. Having a "beefy" SVT tone is hard to replicate live unless you are going through an awesome system or via a Sans Amp. Normally when I hear other bands sound check and the bass player has an awesome "smiley face" tone you KNOW it will get lost in the mix.
4. I'm in the same boat MusicMan - So much cabinet choices Genz, Bergs, Barefaced etc... Damn choice.
5. Phew - not 26 til next November. Thank the Lord!!!
6. I've got 3 payments left on the Dingwall and 7 on the amp if I remember correctly. It's up for review in March by the Government so I would hazard a guess it will get scrapped. It's such a great idea and has helped me to get items I'd normally spend months saving up for.
7. Thom - When Mark leaves you on your own in the shop it equals play as many basses as you can time ;-) Although you do feel like not wanting to touch anything in case you drop it >.< Gawd, the amount I've spent with him is daft. Dingwall, Genz Benz, Mono-Case, strings, 2 x Lava Cables (I ordered a 12ft and he sent me a 15ft because he ran out, THAT is quality service in my eyes), Gramma pad, Gig Skinz amp bag... All Hail The TAKE IT HOME deal
8. Great topic here. If I go to watch a band I've paid money for and travelled to see I will completely loose myself in the show and enjoy it. However the majority of bands I see are support bands or bands above us. If they are nice, upfront and genuine I will have all the time in the world for them. I've met so many nice bassists who'll happily chat away with me about gear and I think it makes a nice change for them to get that. Other times (as said before in this topic) we've had the "disappearing act" bands. One band is particularly bad and notorious for it around my neck of the woods. It even got very heated on-line / in real life once over it. Basically our guitarist is a promoter and has got this band loads of gigs and gigs supporting us (to good crowds) and the minute they finish they go. ALL of them. I understand the ones who have work but most of them don't. They've done it at every gig, every time. It really is unbelievable. Then they have the cheek to moan about crowds leaving or not supporting them at gigs. *sigh* Back on topic - if they band is good, I will tell them and give them some appreciation. If they are bad, I just don't say anything or maybe say the odd "Vocals were slightly bad" but I never stand there giving them Music 101.
9. My first was a Peavey Milestone 4 (I think that's what it was called!) and a Carlsbro 90watt bass/keyboard amp. Really old looking thing, cost about £50 at the time. First gig rig was a Peavey 5 string bass (can't remember name, it was flame orange) and Peavey TNT 115. Current rig - a bit better now ;-) See below! THOM - love the santa mate!!!
10. Dans fact of the day: Did you know the floor in their "concert" hall is made out of Bubinga!!! (So they told me) And they have a custom DW Kit made out of it too...
11.
Anything by Portishead for me...
How the hell did I miss them.. Roads - what a bloody song, got to be one of the saddest/beautiful songs ever.
12.
Here's what they look like in a gig situation under typical pub lights and Maplin 4-bulb flash boxes. Excuse the bass face! http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=101...63.342366270523
*puts anti-nuclear flash glasses on* Christ Jesus, they are bright!!!!
13. He just talked you out of spending £2000 because in HIS opinion the Berggies are better AND you will save money. What's so bad about this??? It is HIS shop and HIS opinions so just take them on board as with everything else in life, not everyone will agree. I've had quite a lot of dealings with Mark and he's never bullied me (or spoken over me) into buying anything I didn't want and has always offered his opinion on gear. I've taken some on board, and some I have not. Go figure. Maybe you caught him on off day?
14. That LeFay bass, in my humble opinion, is one of the ugliest basses I've ever seen! Urgh!
15. My Ashes - Porcupine Tree: Awesome keys on this track. Great atmosphere too, love it. Forgotten Hopes - Anathema: This band and particularly this song mean a hell of a lot to me, cracking track. All is Full of Love - Bjork: She's just haunting and even though this isn't her most "atmospheric" song it gets me every time. Music for a Nurse - Oceansize: Sheer brilliance and completely beautiful. Probably got a few more but these spring to mind as my top 4!
16. You did Thom, Also - What was the Sandy like at the gig mate??
17. I also changed to Lava Cables from Planet Waves and although it hurt when I bought them I have noticed an improved in tone. Just better clarity. Obviously when playing live and loud there probably isn't THAT much difference to the listener. The main thing for me though is the build quality. They are like the SAS of leads. My planet waves would start to crackle after a few months heavy use but I've had one Lava Cable since July and it has withstood everything. Not a single crackle or slight bit of damage. Also - what is quite interesting to know - the Planet waves have those sprung jacks that "hold" them in your bass...after many chats with Warwick owners this actually buggers the inside of the jack socket up by applying unnecessary pressure. Happened to my FNA Jazzman and Thumb.
18. That ride cymbal is just immovable and sooooo solid!!! Love it!
19. The first big notice for me was when I used my Combustion live too. I could just feel it cutting through the mix more than my Warwick's ever did. On their own they might just sound like "another" top end bass but personally in a live setting, I've yet to find a better bass. If I could change one thing it would be this (and it is just griping for the sake of griping) I'd square off the top of the PUPS to rest your thumb on. I have no problems as it is BUT if I could change one thing, it would be that. Just to make it ever so slightly more comfy on the old thumb.
20. Haha! Well, Nottingham is quite a distance I think from you so ;-) Might have to pass this time!!! (Quality choons though bud)
21. To be honest, your better off heading to Nottingham on The Red Arrow via the train. The Greyhound has a jam night most Sundays I believe. The Bell has some sort of jam night in the market square. Your best bet is to just go scout the local boozers and pubs as most don't advertise on the net.
22. If only I was down Brighton...and not already in a Tech/Death band!!! Although I see this as a good opp for gig swaps mate!!! My band is http://lordaeron.bandcamp.com myspace.com/kingdomoflordaeron If your ready by next year we have a tour booked and I think we're down your neck of the woods so maybe could sort something for you there. Dan / Lordaeron
