+1 from me. Says it all really. I can appreciate you are inexperienced and newcomer to bass and see this as a great opportunity so i guess some sort of balance would be preferred. Dave

How many mistakes per gig do you make?
dmccombe7 replied to The Dark Lord's topic in General Discussion
Depends on the band or the gig. If i'm depping in a band which is rare and usually last minute notice then i probably get away with a few mistakes. With my own bands i learn the songs well enough by the time we gig that i generally don't recall making any mistakes at a gig unless something major distracts me of course while i'm deep in thought. Seriously i try to learn the songs to a point i don't need to think too much at the gigging stage and it comes pretty naturally. That's mainly because the band have put the effort in at rehearsals to get to that point. In all honesty i would accept one or two mistakes from myself or any member of my own band provided not show stoppers. Had one in a deep purple tribute band where the keys player started the song in a different key (programming error) and singer stopped the song at first few lines, made a joke about live music it can happen to the best of bands and the audience just laughed, accepted it and we restarted the song with all of us playing in the same key It was a great gig too. So no pics then Dave

Gotta laugh at the couple having sex comment. Don't think i've ever played one of those type of clubs. Not even sure how i would react to seeing that Dave

Just ordered the paperback from Amazon. Here on Tues 8th just in time for my weeks hols at Loch Ness. The first book was brilliant and from what i've read on the reviews this is just as good. Thanks Dave and here's hoping for a 3rd book in your series soon. Dave -
Can't say i've ever really noticed anything i wasn't expecting to be honest. Altho couple years ago while depping in a 70's covers band at a caravan park i was surprised when a few kids wandered on to the dance floor on our first song and were simply having a great time dancing about. Can't remember the song but coming from a heavy rock background i had never played to an audience that weren't all adults (or claimed to be) and were either stoned or happily drunk. Dave

My goto Jazz bass had a small ding on the front near the control plate. No idea how it got there. Touched it up with black gloss wood paint and its virtually gone unless i'm specifically looking for it. I have a sneaky feeling it may have been when a guitarist turned round and clipped it with his head stock but to be honest can't remember and have never accused anyone incl myself. Dave

How important is the band name for you?
dmccombe7 replied to Barking Spiders's topic in General Discussion
They were born in Glasgow Scotland but AC/DC are regarded as Australian. Just the whole story i always thought a wee bit funny Dave -

I like that Was a heavy rock band ZZ Top and AC/DC covers along with some original material and some Southern blues rock. Good band and we toured UK back in 80's. Dave -

I saw an AC/DC tribute band in France called Scotland. Couldn't speak English but they could sing in English. So we had a French band called Scotland paying tribute to an Australian band and singing in English. Have to say they were 1st class too. Dave -

My first proper band was called Torquemada after the Monk that started the Spanish Inquisition. Not that i knew that before then but quite liked it. Many people asked where the name came from tho. That was circa 1980 playing rock and prog covers. Other band names Firestorm (metal covers of course), Stormbringer (Deep Purple related covers), Mind Sculpture (Originals Prog band), George's Kitchen (singers dog called George and he was kept in Kitchen when he was out), Gypsies Kiss (no idea where that name came from as band had been playing good few years before i joined) The Monday Club (we rehearsed on a Monday night - blues funk based rock band) Hot Love (T.Rex / 70's covers band) Several others over the years i've forgotten so that says a lot for the names. I like the name to try and relate to the style of music but its not always possible. Dave -

How many songs can you play? (Without help/ music/ tabs)
dmccombe7 replied to T-Bay's topic in General Discussion
I must be one of the few that just don't remember songs. I play the ones in my current band but any previous songs i generally just forget. I could maybe bluff my way thru some of them but wouldn't commit to saying i knew them if asked. Few days refreshing my memory on them and they would come back quite quickly. I can play along with loads of CD albums without issue but i generally wouldn't count them unless i was playing them in a band situation. Dave -
I've played in bands where i didn't pick any of the songs but the band was a style i wasn't really into. The songs were well liked by audience and to be honest i enjoyed playing them. I've also been in bands where i didn't pick the songs and were all within a specific genre ie heavy metal and after trying it for a few rehearsals decided it wasn't for me. I left that particular band. Think my point is that you either go along with the democratic vote and play whatever the deciding vote says or you leave and find a band that suits what you want to do. If the drummer thinks the songs are boring to play then he needs to move on and find a band or style of music that suits what he wants to do. Compromise or form your own band where you dictate everything. Dave

Yet another ruined gig due to the mix.

I've found many so called "sound engineers" are just Joe Bloggs off the street has been given the job to monitor the desk in a venue and rather than have any formal training he's had to pick it up himself. The good FOH sound is usually from guys that have had roper training. Back in my earlier years the sound engineers were just mates that said they would operate the desk for us and we toured with that too and it all seemed to be ok at the time. Would have to say at larger venues like the OP mentioned i would expect the sound engineers to be properly trained in their job. I've been to gigs where i was level with bass bins and it was mostly all i could hear. Dave -
Sorry for laughing but that just about sums up the British climate in a nutshell. Totally unpredictable. Dave

I've read quite a few over past couple of years while on holiday including Guy's, Glenn Hughes, Gene Simmons, Ozzy and Bob Daisley's to read this year's holiday in May. Like the various F1 driver autobiography's too. David Coultard's was interesting if you like F1 that is. Dave

I don't need to worry about world cup gigs. Never gonna happen here. Maybe this tho

Icehouse were on a TOTP 80's edition few weeks ago with Guy Pratt on bass. I recorded it just for that reason. If you haven't read Guys book yet you should. Quite an insight into music world of those days. Dave
