Just seen an advert wanting a guitarist for a North East based tribute band called NEvana.

Hank Wangford's band The Lost Cowboys has had lots of great players over the years who were given pseudonyms - these include Brad Breath, Jett Atkins, Manly Footwear, (the great pedal steel player BJ Cole) George Hamilton VI, and female vocalist Irma Cetas.

Think I remember a band (possibly from the Leeds area) called the Above Average Weight Band.

Are you a Lebowski? Creedence or Eagles?
casapete replied to Chiliwailer's topic in General Discussion
Although I love both bands, I’ve gone for The Eagles. All great vocalists, a solid legacy of albums and still going strong in their latest incarnation. Was a fan of Joe Walsh too before he joined them so that helps, same as with current member Vince Gill. Saw them at Stafford Bingley Hall in 1977 on the Hotel California tour, and the gig remains one of the best I’ve seen. CCR also had great songs, loved their more stripped down approach but like someone mentioned earlier I do find John Fogerty’s vocals a bit wearing after a while. Still a classic band though. -

I'm sure they are. Thought the bass player (John Cowan?) had a great voice, and enjoyed his playing too. -
I’ve used an original Compact for over 12 years now, and have been extremely happy with it. Took a while to get the sound I wanted from my amp (GK 1001RB or GK 800RB) but once settled it’s been wonderful. Goes as loud as I need, but crucially has made my gigging life so much easier. Now in my 60’s and looking forward to getting working again, it (or possibly another BF cab) will be with me as long as I continue to gig.

Watched The Doobies, pretty good. Vocals almost too good to be true at times, but overall very enjoyable. Just watching Santana now but had enough of the interminable percussion so calling it a night.😴 -
This is one (of many..) that every time I hear it on the radio, I wonder why it wasn't sorted? Very precise / sterile kind of jazz funk instrumental with a great trumpet player, and yet at around 1.03 there's a note that leaps out, to me anyway. ( If it's 'jazz' then of course I humbly apologise) 😎

Reminds me of Johnny Cash’s ‘A boy named Sue’. Apparently the band hadn’t been given warning of the song being in the set list when the live album ‘At San Quentin’ was recorded, and do sound like they are busking through a lot of the chord changes. Still sounds good though.

Love it! Appeals to my liking of quirky basses ( Danelectro, Kay etc), not sure if it’s worth nearly £1k though ( to me anyway). But then find another one....😄

Fab post, hope the sessions are another great experience too. 😊

Are your music tastes eclectic or quite narrow?
casapete replied to Barking Spiders's topic in General Discussion
Absolutely, one of my all time favourite songs. There’ something about the way Jimmy Webb writes that gets me nearly every time. He has written some amazing stuff - By the time I get to Phoenix, Do what you gotta do, Didn’t we, Up up and away, Galveston etc etc. If you get chance, try to catch the episode of The Great Songwriters on Sky Arts with Jimmy, it’s fantastic. -
The 8 piece band I was with for over 15 years had relatively few changes in personnel, just singers (naturally). They seemed to love it at first and then lose interest after a year or so. My current band have had the same lineup for the last 10 years (me being the newest member), until recently when our keyboard player retired. Had a devil of a job replacing him too but finally got a great guy to replace him, thank god. Think it was Count Basie who when asked how he kept a big band on the road replied - 'I pay them money'.

Nice job, and a great bass well worth your sterling work. -

Me neither - wasn't keen on Duran Duran (especially with SLB's flat vocals) or Spandau Ballet either, but at least Spandau had a decent singer who could carry a tune.- 194 replies

Think it was me mentioning Buble, and comparing him to Sinatra who he most probably idolises. What I don't get with Buble is that he's an okay singer , (nothing great but can do it IMHO) so why make records that so obviously feature 'that' sound? Most of the music he plays seems to reference older swing styles so at what point did anyone think they should change this to being more contemporary by relying on vocal effects? Then again, with record sales of 30 million worldwide what do I know......🤔- 194 replies

Whilst reading this, Radio 2 have just played Frank Sinatra singing 'My Way'. Some of his notes are just a bit flat in a few places, but it doesn't stop it being a great performance IMHO. Contrast with Michael Buble, who's more recent output appears (to me at least) to be quite obviously auto-tuned. I know which I prefer. ☺️ P.S. - Forgot to add, Sinatra walked in and did the song in one take too.- 194 replies

I've done this alternating between an old Roland D5 and my P-bass. Just set it up using an A/B box into my rig then DI with no problems, very lo-fi but worked fine. Main problem was having enough room onstage to set the Roland up. When I went to see Stevie Wonder, Nate Watts switched between bass and keys for a lot of the gig, although must admit I couldn't hear much difference.

I feel your pain. I had a Peavey 410TX, used it for years. Seriously underrated cab in my opinion, shame it weighed a ton. ( Had a 210TX as well, another great bargain cab.) Mine survived a few months in Morocco, shipped out there with just a vinyl covering too. Just because it’s regular stuff is no reason to abuse it though.

Zambezi was actually a cover too - was from the 1950’s by Lou Busch. 🙂
