When the Covid goes, and gigs resume, what amp?
casapete replied to barrycreed's topic in Amps and Cabs
Here we go then.... Fender Rumble combos! Your budget should get you a s/h Rumble 500 with some change too. 350 watts into its internal 2x10 speakers / 500 if you add another 8 ohm cab although you probably won’t need it as they’re loud as hell. Not heavy either, and great classic tones easy to dial in. Hold their value as well should you decide to upgrade from there. -
They played Hull City Hall and was the same apparently, after hearing comments from people who went and left early because of it.

I saw The Who maybe late 70’s, and was about 2 rows in front of Townshend’s Hiwatt rig. Was worried it would be too much but was actually great, as the PA was crazy loud but I wasn’t in the firing line of that. One of the best guitarists I’ve ever seen, with great control and tone.

Went see Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band at St James Park in Newcastle in 1985. The music before they came on was gradually ramped up in volume till it was really kicking. Loud but great quality loud if you know what I mean. They announced the band, and Max Weinberg kicked off ‘ Born in the USA’ and I swear it rearranged my internal organs. Took a few songs to acclimatise , great gig though. Despite being deafeningly loud it wasn’t that kind of volume where it hurt for days after. Unlike when I saw RnB band The Count Bishops at Dingwalls in London, late 1970’s. The PA consisted of banks of Bose 802 speakers ( maybe 16) on each side, and when the band kicked off we had to immediately retreat to the back where it was just as bad. Not just the loudness but dreadful harsh sound. Didn’t help when a drunk Alex Harvey came on to guest either, shouting his lines above the cacophony. I had severe ringing in my ears for two weeks afterwards, thought it had done irreparable damage TBH. Always take earplugs to gigs these days - rarely need to use them thank god, but handy to have all the same.

Songs where bits seem tagged on for the hell of it

I bought this on a 7” single when it came out. Part one on the A side and turn it over for the moody Part two. Great song though, Peter Green at his best. -
Middle of the Road.

Ha ha, I very nearly did the same thing! My 11 year old daughter wanted to go so duly obliged and got tickets to see the show in Manchester. Have to say that musicals were never my thing, and this only went to confirm my thoughts. At one point one of the ‘cats’ came and sang right in the face of my wife sitting next to me - if it had been me I probably would have walked there and then. As I didn’t want to spoil things for my daughter I felt obliged to stay for all the performance, there’s a couple hours of my life I’ll never get back. Needless to say, my daughter and wife loved it.....

I had a plectrum given to me by Scotty Moore (Elvis etc) that he gave me at a guitar show in Dallas. I gave it to my mate who was a massive Scotty fan, along with a signed Scotty photo that he gave me to give to my mate too.

Interesting to see that 60’s and 70’s stuff is still so widely used in advertising (and also movie soundtracks). Of course some of this is to appeal to target demographic groups from the same era, but still a lot aimed at younger folk too. Wonder how much music from recent years will be used for the same purpose in 50 odd years time?

I’ve seen VT twice Paul, and thought they were pretty darned good. Can understand why you thought it a bit over the top, but for me it was just good to see a band playing that sort of stuff really well and being entertaining too. We met them after the gig and all top blokes. Mrs CP was not the only female audience member who wanted to chat with the singer too...😉
-
First to admit heavy and doom metal aren’t my go to genres of music. It was just one of those gigs where the audience would have gone crazy for the band just being there whatever it was like, and in this instance Geezer’s pride was certainly left intact.

I saw Supertramp on that tour in Hull. Same reaction as you too! Joan Armatrading okay but didn’t last long when Supertramp came on.

Has been a few, but the main one that springs to mind was Black Sabbath at Hammersmith Odeon, probably 1977/8. My girlfriend had got us tickets, for some reason thinking I may like it. Truly dreadful noise, vocals just so bad as well as being way too loud and badly mixed. That and also being under the balcony and seeing it moving due to the nutters upstairs. We lasted maybe 3 numbers, and ended up in a pub round the corner where we saw a great RnB band for free.

I had a Precision type bass a while ago which had a ply body and it was ace. (For complete disclosure though, I own and love a Danelectro Longhorn which is made using a pine frame covered in hardboard). There is also a belief that ply can be quite good for some acoustic instruments, particularly those with built in piezo type electrics. Apparently the rigidity of the ply helps with controlling feedback.

I’ve always loved the Layla outro but realise I’m in a very small minority. Duane Allman and EC sound great to these ears, whether ‘in tune’ or not. I remember the album being released and listening to it all the way through in awe. Seem to remember hearing some other versions from the sessions which were far more shall we say ‘interesting’. Will post if I can find them, if only to annoy the BC faithful. 😂 -

Know what you mean, but by then the main riff is getting a bit much IMHO, and the middle bit breaks it up nicely. Great guitar solo too...😀 -

Plenty of stuff kicking around in the 1970's when i was a teenager. I remember thinking these were dreadful even back then - Some girls will, some girls won't Some girls need a lot of lovin' and some girls don't Well, I know I've got the fever but I don't know why Some say they will and some girls lie. Even worse, this one - Can't believe anyone ever thought these lyrics were okay, even in 1974/75. Girls I like them fat, I like them tall Some skinny, some small I got to get to know them all Girls love the things they know Love the things they show Have to be where they go Pretty girls the sunshine in the air The perfume that they wear Girls are everywhere I like to be on an island With five or six of them fine ones With one to be in good looking And one to do best cooking Give me one with a lot of money Give me two with a lots of honey Give me three to do freaky things Give me four or five more that like to swing

Absolutely. I always try to buy stuff that holds or even increases in value over the years for that very reason, although sometimes get it wrong! I bought a red Gibson 335 a couple of years ago, after wanting one for years. Prices on them do seem to be on the up so if push comes to shove that’s where I’ll start. It’s not too much of a wrench, as I don’t need it and to be honest am a very average guitarist at best so it doesn’t earn it’s keep either! Already parted with some bass stuff, mainly pedals and a Fender rig that weren’t in danger of being used any time soon so again no biggie. My old Precision however is going nowhere.

Thanks - didn’t want to kill the thread, it just made me realise that my GAS is currently in a negative state! Hope I get it back soon though.

Back in the USSR - Beatles.

My list unfortunately will soon be one made up of stuff I’ll need to sell rather than acquire. Hoping it doesn’t come to that but must admit I’ve been looking in my music room mentally noting what would be first to go if the gig situation doesn’t turn around soon. Fingers crossed.

Which drummer you would like to have played with?
casapete replied to Bassman Sam's topic in General Discussion
Wow Chris, you played with 3 of my favourites - Micky Waller, Henry Spinetti and Kenney Jones? - respect! I'll add Charlie Watts and Max Weinberg (E-Street Band) too. -
I'm also a 3 - bass, guitar and piano. I have a mandolin though god knows why as I can barely get a few chords out of it - must get round to selling it I think.
