1. i ue the d'addagio xl 156, which are .24 - .84. i tried the fender set, which are slightly heavier, but i found it almost impossible to intonate the bass.
2.
That's early 80s. Went with the big fat bass heads they made at the time which were the next gen up from the thin bass heads with the glowing green lights (one of which I still have ) Richard
cheers for the info...you have a good memory...i can't even remember where i bought the cab from !!! (btw - is it etiquette to amend the original post ?)
3. tatty H|H bass cab for sale...seen me proud for many years, but a house move and a girlfriend with a wagging finger forces sale. good working order, just very tatty as i said. more pictures here. no idea how old it is, but i guess late 70s or early 80's...you can tell you mates it's 'vintage' if you fancy £40o.n.o. collection only from tottenham, london bung me a pm if you're interested. cheers.
4. i use an ampeg svp-pro preamp into a soundtech ps802 - as in the pic...it sounds lovely. so i'm valve pre and ss kind of guy !
5. been feeling a bit left out, so here's a pic of my vi
6.
They are OK I suppose - purely aestherics for me - I prefer a double cutaway myself...
plus the one
7. there's an interesting article here, although it is written by someone who works for furman, who make power conditioners.
8. so here'my setup - not on a pedalboard as such, but i plan to get my woodworking skills going soon as my current pedalbox isn't large enough !!! can you tell i like a bit of distortion?
9. i'm not a massive fan, but i did see them in hyde park a few years back...the must have gone right off the boil as they were pretty darn good back then..what was it ? 2004 ? shame...i know they seem to be getting a lot of flack these days...ah well. all good things and such
10. deffo a short methinks. btw - remember that even a fairly spent battery will read full voltage with a multimeter...the voltage will sag when used with a load.
11. i used their ep2500 as a power amp with my ampeg pre-amp for a couple of years and had no complaints, the only reason why i stopped using it was the weight (but that's not a behringer specific problem). i've used their bass heads in practice rooms before and was impressed with the sound....to my ears better than the ashdowns i've tried. (you can all shout 'heretic' together if you like !!)
12. in my experience, there's one thing that sounds like valves, and that's valves (sorry if that makes me sound like a gear snob ) there's some bargains to be had out there....ebay linky
13.
MB1. A drummer, two guitarists, and a keyboard player, are always good to have on hand, when you meet a singer! Best of British sir!
thanks i've never played with a keyboard player before...
14. met up with a singer on sunday with a view to starting a new band. he's a sound guy and he played me some of his rough demos - i was impressed. so on thursday i'm off down to balham in london to meet up with a drummer, two guitarists and a keyboard player to see what happens...the singer's very much 'get people in a room and see if we get on and jam a bit' - an attitude i like it's been 10 months since my last band split up...i'm a bit nervous in case i dry up, but it should be good. i'm taking my fender pj, mxr line booster, my modded rat and a tuner... keep 'em crossed for me folks.
15.
active bass?
i wondered about that...i tried my (active) fender 'cowpoke' bass, a passive jazz and a fender vi ...and also my telecaster guitar - same nasty clipping. it's fine if you want a full-bore overdrive sound, but not the 'on the egde' tones. shame, but hats off to the guys in chris chandler guitars on denmark street for providing a no-hassle exchange.
16. ok so after trying out a number of pedals in a shop on denmark street, london, i thought i'd give this one a whirl. the pedal's basically two things - a clean boost (up to +20dB) and an overdrive with gain, tone and volume controls. first the good stuff...the boost section is excellent - very clean sounding and it drives my ampeg pre-amp superbly...just adding a bit of grind and bite to the sound. yes, there's noise there if you crank it all the way up to 20 (!!), but that's just what you'd expect. now...the overdrive....not so good. it sounded nice in the shop, through a smallish amp, but through my rig it's just ugly sounding at anything over 1/3 gain...past this you start to get a nasty clipping sound that reminded me of putting too much signal into a PC soundcard...horrid and totally unmusical. the tone control didn't help much in taming this either. at very high gain levels it get more musical (less ugly clipping) but then i don't need a high gain pedal...i've a few of those already. so i returned it to the shop, and they were more than happy for me to swicth it for the MC-401, which is basically the boost section only. got a credit note for the balance. 10/10 for the boost, 3/10 for the overdrive
17. i've had a chance to try it our properly now, so have a look in the reviews section linky
18. i'd only heard good things about them - iirc they also released a version with a jazz pickup in the neck position as well. not tried one myself....love to though
19. hmm - looks like sanding and varnishing floorboards has been the order of the day this weekend... i might try and get some sound clips posted next week...when the the better half goes out
20. after trying out... mxr distortion+ mxr distortion III roger meyer voodoo blues i decided that this was getting the sound i like - an mxr/cae boost/overdrive early days yet with the home rig, but the overdrive sounds raw and lively and the clean boost is great for getting the front end of my ampeg to slip into a nice bit of grind i'm going to run it though some different setups with my other pedals, but i'm very impressed so far. expensive ?...yes...but it was a sunny day and i'd had a wallet-loosening pint
21. personally, if i were there i'd be more bothered about seeing battles. the chillis are good, but they're pretty much digging a familiar furrow deeper. ymmv
22.
A properly designed amp will not benefit from an external power conditioner as its own power supply should deal with all the filtering and buffering of the mains supply.
i'm no expert, but that's what i would have presumed. i'm curious as to how a mains supply that deviates from a true sine wave would affect an amplifier - surely the power supply in the amplifier is going to be rectifying the sinusoidal main supply into smothed dc anyway ? enlighten me folks !!!
23.
I almost feel inadequate with this little thing - it's going to take some getting used to.
so you should g -how the mighty have fallen ! i remember the good old days...when you hit your effects the lights would dim in birmingham.
24. i've not found any bass shops in london that are particularly inspiring. my fave bass shop was 'howard's bass place' in newcastle - lovely guy...very reasonably priced tech work and always some interesting basses in to have a look at...all second hand mind. it's where i got my musicman sabre.
25. my main bass is a mexican 'cowpoke' pj...blind bought on ebay, and it turned out to be the best i've ever played. i love it
