1. Does it matter if the floorboards are stained or painted ?
 2. Maybe the idea is that when you've taken enough acid to truly get into and appreciate the paintjob, there will be more than enough strings for you...
 3. I don't like those control knobs (cooker style ?) on footpedals - too easy to knock. A round profile like on the originals would be more sensible in my book.
 4. Bought the wrong size by mistake to refurbish my crutches after ankle surgery earlier this year. Free to a good home, but you might consider popping a couple of quid in the Basschat coffers to keep that karma flowing. These were too big for my cructhes - I think they may be more suited to a walking frame. Not my pic, just for 'illustrative purposes only' as they say
 5.
That's what I'm talking about: the force of the front man's personality controlling the show and the audience. I used my shyness as a tool. Showing vulnerability, playfulness, and wit, while nailing the vocals on some of the hardest songs on the radio at the time, proved irresistable to the young ladies.
Why, sir...I do declare....
 6. One of the most successful bands I was in had the most unassuming frontman. It was mainly spoken word stuff, not singing most of the time (we were once described as The Fall meets Mogwai), but he had the ability to captivate a room and his 'tween-song musings and poetry often kept the whole venue silent. Just to say that a frontman doesn't have to be a 'star' in the traditional sense. Here he is (that's me in the background, in a brief hairless phase)
 7.
Ok, I'll go with the fine nuance; there's no major conflict here.
8. It's certainly not an ability I have, wouldn't know where to start.
 9.
Yeah, that's true. To be fair I've been in worse positions, but I won't go there for reasons (In case my old bandmates are reading this ) E: That might be all of us then, we have a habit of saying what we really think!
Well I'd suggest you all go for a bag of chips when he's on then !
 10.
... which amounts to the same thing, really.
Does it ? I was trying to point out the difference between not wanting to and not being able to. One may have the money to buy one and still not wish to - a choice on the part of the individual concerned. Not having the money to buy one renders that choice an academic one. Someone who has chosen not to buy a backup amplifier when they could have done and then finds themselves with an amp that won't work at a gig is entirely at fault for their lack of bass amp. Can another person, who doesn't have the resources to buy a second amplifier in the same situation to be said to be at fault ? I'd say no. It may be that they simply don't have enough money, or have spent it on something more pressing.
 11.
...so there's no excuse for not having a spare other than not wanting to spend the cash on one...
Well, there is not being able to afford one...
 12.
I might do that actually... He just sounds so pretentious
OR you could just say to yourself 'Not my cup of tea' and slip out and get a bag of chips. You might be up for a gig with the other bands in the future and it might not be best to be in 'that band with the mouthy bassist' Just a thought.
 13.
These multi-genre gigs are always a nightmare in my experience, but for a first gig they're fairly standard. I try to avoid them now, unless the bands are utterly fantastic everyone tends to go home a bit disappointed! With regards gear sharing, there is no "right" answer. What is expected varies from bass player to bass player, band to band, venue to venue, promoter to promoter and gig to gig. The only golden rule is "sort it out in advance". Contact the other bands, contact the promoter. Arrange in advance exactly who is providing what. So long as all the planning is sorted before the night and everyone knows the score then thats the important thing. If you don't want to share your gear, thats fine---but make sure you state that in advance, because the other bands may have been given a different impression by the promoter or even by whoever it is in your band that does the bookings. If you are going to share gear, brilliant, but arrange it in advance so that there aren't three drumkits and four bassamps sitting at the side of the stage taking up precious space. My own experience of gigging the originals circuit is that if you are completely unwilling to compromise on gear sharing then there's going to be problems. Its just not realistic to completely tear down between every single band at multi-band gigs. You just have to make sure that the compromise is acceptable to everyone.
plus the one
 14.
Truth. Isn't it gig curtosy to provide a drumkit however? There's no reason for me to loan out anything but arrangements are made and I can't do anything about it now
Usually, as it a bit of a donwer on the night if the 1st band takes their drum kit home with them ! I've spent almost all my musical life playing small venues with some degree of cooperation between the bands in terms of set-up (15 years of that in Newcastle) and you just have to roll with the punches. I'd say in a venue the size of the Telegraph it's simply impractical for every band to bring their own kit - the punters will get bored watching the setting up, sod off downstairs and youll never see them again. It's rotten that you seem to be left holding the baby, amp-wise but that's the situation...IME if you're bringing the bass amp then the other bassist will be very appreciative...I'd suggest having a chat with them before the gig, tell them what they're not to do with your kit and simply tell them that if they DO start messing around with your amp then you'll be on stage in a flash to 'ave a word. You can make this work and leave with some good karma for the next gig - where you can turn up with just your bass if you want to !
 15.
Just a shame we're not playing post avantgarde Swedish Vegetarian grindcore metal.
Put that on the door.....own that genre !
 16.
Unfortunately I only found all this infomation out last night. The only other things I knew was turn up at five and I'd agreed to loan someone my head because they'd agreed if there was any damages they'd pay for the repair. I wasn't expecting to have to take my own cab to a gig as-well and the info about the other bands wasn't given to me.
Sounds like you're going to have to do some legwork to play the gig, shame that the communication's been ropey but there you go. Some gigs are just a mess - they make the cool ones even better. As for the kit mix-up, you've got till tomorrow to sort it out. That's ages. Most small gigs like the one you describe are kit share IME (I'm not going to get into the rights and wrongs of lending gear - it's been done to death here. Suffice to say I don't have a problem people using my equipment as long as it's arranged in advance). Get on the phone and make the gig happen ! It may not be a fantastic night, but not all gigs are triumphant victories, some are just gigs. I'll keep them crossed for you !
 17.
So guys, my band is playing our first gig tomorrow and there's been a couple of issues. One of which is it's a multi-genred night. With a so called accoustic act that dubs his work as a "Journey chronicling his depression over the last few years" an Indie band and somebody else. Now we're a Metal band first and foremost with older influences (So no chug, chug breakdowns) I've never really been a fan of multi-genred nights mainly because people tend to leave after their mates band has finished and doesn't support everyone (Which they should, but it's not an issue for us) Another thing is lack of space and gear. We're playing somewhere which isn't a venue. It's a pub that puts on gigs because the promoter can get the function room above there. Apparently it is the size of a shoe box and the organization hasn't been great. Thus far, we have been told that there's a drumkit (but bring your own pedals and breakables) and I was originally told that a band would be providing two Marshall Bass cabs for me to use, then I turn up at rehersal last night and the guitarist of my band is convinced he told me that I was going to use my own set up and band share it for the last two bands. I'm not exactly keen on loaning gear out, due to the story in a Glenn Fricker video about the Day Glo Abortions who blew up a kids JCM 800 in the eighties, just left and didn't pay the guy compensation for it. Twenty five years later. And another thing is, we've got good gear if we are going to loan it out and a guitarist in another band is adamant on using his Marshall MG and cab (ew) so we may need to loan his God awful cab. He's on the verge of getting sacked from his band though. But I'm guessing leave that to the guitarists to sort out. What's your thoughts on multi genred nights and loaning out gear?
Reading your post I wonder why you're even bothering - you've decided it's going to be a disatser already, so why are you playing ?
 18. An amp failed on me onstage once (years ago, very cheap amp). Once I realised there was no way out of the situation I bowed, left the stage and became a very enthusiatic member of the audience
 19.
Totally jaded ! I agree, but then I like to think I am worth the same as what other performers get paid, they also book the return train tickets to be collected with a pin number and send a pick up to the station for everyone else as well.
For a bit of context folks, I'd replied that spacey's comment was 'totally jaded', then removed it as I didn't really think it was a contructive thing to say Just so you don't think he's talking to himself any more than usual
 20. Beautiful, beautiful...I can only admire your skill and patience. The Pookhat is well and truly doffed.
 21. If you can afford it, then yes !
 22.
The cabinet was one of the self assembly modular drawer things that IKEA sold at the time for £6.
I doff my hat to you sir !
 23.
...
Brilliant
 24. Fender Blacktop Jazz ?
 25.
I'll consider anything....how about a motorbike?
