I’m of the opinion that if a band wants me to play a specific bass for the look of it, the band should buy that instrument. I’m not paying to go to work! Just my cantankerous opinion.

Changing the taper of your potentiometer will do that - Log pots (denoted A) will bunch all of the change at the clockwise end of the turn. Linear pots (B) have a linear change and finally Anti-Log (C) have most of the value change bunched up at the counter-clockwise end. just replace the current potentiometer with one of the same value but different taper to tailor it more to your liking.

One of the best versions I've heard of Zappa's favourite piece. To be fair, not many bands have the inclination (or skill) to pull off a lot of Zappa's stuff.

depends whereabout in the circuit they are, if they're after the gain stage then they could be clippers - anti-parallel is the classic choice for doing this.

I actually quite like this. The bonus of this is that, should you decide that you really can't live with the 'bite', there's enough wood left over to cut it off and still make a more aesthetically pleasing shape at the end.

Overdrive is a weird one. I find the more I use, the less of it I blend in. A 'light touch' (moss is just starting to form on the cusp of each freshly formed note) means I'll probably use a 100% wet sound, but settings that have a bit more dirt (fungal spores now airborne/wire-haired terrier) right up to just plain nasty (Lemmy having a shave with an angle grinder) are usually about 50/50.

Me too. I don't need one, couldn't find a use for one, and probably (almost certainly) can't afford one - I wouldn't say no though.
