1. Recently I've joined a classic rock covers band (and very good they are too), and have been trying to nail the tone of Thin Lizzy/Guns N' Roses etc... so I've been dabbling with playing with a pick. I've got two music degrees and 20 years playing experience, loads of studio jobs under my belt too so I'd say my timekeeping is very, very good. Trying to 'lock in' whilst playing with a pick? Feels like being a beginner again. I know that sometimes the pick gets a bit of a rum deal on here (sometimes in jest, other times not), but don't knock it folks; it's just another technique and is equally as valid as slapping, fretless or any other 'specialist' way of playing you'd care to mention.
2. If you trust the engineer and he has a proven track record / recommendations etc... then trust his judgement. He's probably thinking 4 steps ahead to what the bass will sound like in the mix - and that's what counts. Tracking bass isn't about keeping bass players happy, it's about the finished product - though a happy bass player helps...
3. Bass related and under a tenner? Metronome (if you haven't already got one...) 'nome 'nome 'nome
4. Vocals - Björk Drums - Dennis Chambers Guitar - Larry LaLonde (Primus) Bass - I'd have a stab at it. Not sure about keys, I might use Johnny Marr on rhythm though...
5.
Being owned by me devalues a bass
Yeah, I devalue basses all the time. In fact, I use MDP as an agent now and I find I get more for them on his eBay listings (as opposed to mine). He takes a cut though.... ...generally with a blunt saw in a really obvious place.

free loops

Just had an email from oddgrooves regarding some free loops in 4/4. link thing: http://www.oddgrooves.com/free-44-drum-loops-by-magnus-brandell-2/?awt_l=D.vq_&awt_m=3cc_8S50eJUYBPi
7. Nice! Probably counts as 1 of your 5 a day too.
8. generally pin 2 is hot (signal), so that'll go to the tip, but they tend to be printed on the kit these days, or try looking at an online manual - that sort of info is generally in the back pages.
9. http://www.mediacollege.com/audio/connection/xlr-jack-mono.html looks about right.
10. Skol's was in my top 3, as were Lord Sausage's entry (fnar, fnar) and Silddx's piece because it reminded me so much of Zappa's music (and I mean that in a very positive way!). Well done to all involved.
11. Does forgetting my trousers count?
12. Just sneaked in a last minute vote - been mulling over my 'top 3' for a while and finally made my mind up. The standard of entries has been brilliant (as always), and I've really enjoyed listening. Thanks BCers.
13. I started out as a guitarist, then moved to keyboards and got into Rush that way. As soon as I heard Ged play I knew that was what I wanted to do. I still dabble with loads of different instruments but I always come back to the bass. I f***ing LOVE it!
I'm dashed if I fathom this dotty thread. I mean, what's the point..?
this one . hope this helps.
15. Nice. The Chord BOD 50 is a brilliant little piece of kit, sounds identical to the Boss and has a cast metal case too, a massive leap up from Behringer in every respect, but for the same money. Good luck with the sale. Here's a picture of mine>
16.
Went into the new Reidy's in Blackburn Lancs the other day & was greeted as though I'd taken a dump in the doorway as I entered; obviously geared up to catch the students from the college next door but the 6 or 7 staff in there were failing miserably at trying to fool each other they were busy.
That's been my experience of them too - they're not terribly knowledgeable or helpful either.
17. Make sure you get a USB iLok key with it too, you'll need that to authorise it.

19. Yes, you'd be able to register it as your copy. AFAIK it's the dealer's responsibility to check your entitlement to academic versions. I bought mine from my local independent music shop (it's the way forwards, folks) and he knew that I taught music, so that was good enough for him. When I registered it online I don't remember even being asked whether I was a stoodent or not. Hope this helps.
20.
I'd be happy to buy a bass from Teisco - they're really cool. Oh no ... wait ...
beat me to it!
21. OK, so we've got a thread about the last bassline you learned, but I'm curious as to what is the best one you've learned? I realise that this has the potential to be a contentious issue, after all, someone's 'best' will inevitably be someone's 'worst' etc..., but it's a purely personal choice. Mine's probably 'Freewill' by Rush.
22. Personally I'd go for DI and mic. I tend to use the DI out on my DHA VT1 pre effects. I mic the cab for FX (fuzz, distortion always sounds better coming out of a speaker than DI'ed to my ears). You might need to experiment with mic positions so that you don't run into phase issues/comb filtering though. But as always, if it sounds right, it is right.
23.
On a more positive note, with two extra strings we could rid the world of guitarists.
Like.
24. Shizznit's got it - one to one tuition from an experienced (and recommended) bass teacher will pay ultimately dividends. There's plenty of time to get obsessed by gear later on ( ), for now I'd say the single best thing that you can do is to invest in some lessons.
