2.
kudos to you beedster. im sure your good actions will impress kylie if nout else
The other Kylie was filming Dr Who about 50 yards from my front door last week ... My wife and kid chatted to Dave T and got a picture but left before Saint Kylie of Undertogs arrived ... Shame
 3.
How did I miss this thread? That's a lovely shaped body you've got there OG.
Thanks very much I just overlaid Tinman's on mine in Photyship and found a lot of differences even though they look very similar.. Mine has a much fatter bottom and the 21 fret neck configuration means the bridge has to be further from the neck pocket etc ... That bit makes quite a difference to the end result.
 4.
That's lovely Si, just lovely.
Yeah That top will look fabbo when the 8 mile deep shine goes on but what a nice grain for the back. Jon said he chose that specifically as it wasn't having a back cap ..
 5.
How did I miss this thread? That's a lovely shaped body you've got there OG. This bass doesn't look bad neither. -- ha ha, you're married to a bassist. oh noes...
Nah not me, Im married to a real musician Thats Mrs Tinman .. Tinmans married to her .. she just blames me for the kids having no shoes and the Repo man taking away the telly ... Well, Tinman will have a mighty fine Shuker in a few weeks
 6. I'll be there on Sunday .. I know Mark (Poptart) from BassDirect is going and taking some exotica from his ranges including a Roscoe or two and a pair of Wood & Tronics. Might need a Marshall bag full of fifties for those though ...
 7. Got some pics at last .. The front ... The back ..
 8.
Great looking woods Pete, I'll have a good butchers when I'm up there on Saturday to pick mine up !
OOHH Pics of all available please! Latest pics of mine arrived today .. No gloss yet ..
 9.
I lost £45 in insurance money on a bass with Parcel Force. I (wrongfully I guess) assumed that when I paid for full cover I would get full cover. I'm normally a stickler for T&Cs so I deserve it in my opinion. Still, £45 needlessly gone into someone elses pocket. SenditNow will be up with -1 in a jiffy.
Well you could argue that hiding the insurance limitation under a heading of "Prevent movement of items in transit " in the packaging instructions counts as being deliberately misleading ... PM me if you'd like my contact's name .. She may be able to get you a refund if you can prove you paid it out..
 10. Simon Armitage summed it up nicely in the extract from his book on forming a band in his 40's published in the Guardian magazine recently Read the whole article here but here's the bit I'd go on endlessly about Google it before you think you've found the answer ... " Every time we do find what we think is a decent name, it turns out that it already belongs to a neo-punk band from Ohio who, even if they haven't released any records as yet, have a sw***y website, have patented the brand and registered their trademark, and own the domain name. " Check myspace too ...
 11.
MB1. Dennis and the lion tamers!... it is then!.....Top One! More Tea Vicar?.........
I think you'll find the lion tamers already play as Claude Botham's backing band
 12.
I just go with the bassline to "The Thrill is Gone" very recognisable and just pumps out lurvely throbbiness...
Oh I just love the way the snare drops back from 2 and 4 to just beat 2 for the first verse in that in the orginal BB King version. Less is definately more ... In the old days I'd play Hey Joe, or Reeling in The Years but these days I play the chorus riff from "When you're gone" by, er, me and a morris dancing tune called The Princess Royal which is great and which gets a few looks Oh and School Days
 13. Looks like someone is sending out a warning. 74 Jazz bass for £3,993 on ebay but it's actually a warning to any potential purchasers of stuff from 2-Gnome-Attic Here
 14.
Well I'm big enough to admit when I'm wrong! It appears that my defense of 'senditnow.com' and their level of insurance cover has been misinformed and mis sold! I rang them several months ago when I was in my Mustaffah Fender phase and I was buying and selling basses to fund my latest folly. They stated that basses/guitars were covered but the case in which they were shipped was not (fair does) and if I took out extra insurance of course the instrument would be insured but not the case as it was considered packaging. I subsequently received/sent at least 3 expensive instruments through them. In the process of my latest 'want' I thought I'd look at this sticky and weigh up options, I rang Sendit just to double check the cover and lo and behold even though the exclusions still just lists the case as not covered I was informed that even if I took out extra insurance I'd not be covered for more than the basic £150! 'Since when?' I asked, 'About the last 6 months', during the period I was using them. The robbing tw*ts have taken the extra premium from me for inflated cover even though I'd not be covered. Nowhere does it say that if you take out extra cover (which is offered n the booking process) will you not be covered for musical instruments. Needless to say I'll be submitting a claim for a refund of the monies paid for cover that wasn't applicable and I'll be submitting a complaint to the appropriate ombudsman. From my experience with the shiftless chiselers I'd recommend steering well clear. -1 (or more) for 'senditnow'/ParcelForce
After discovering SenditNow was Parcel Force I called my contact (made at the very end of my smashed bass story) in the Chief Executive Officers complaints department about this. She went into the senditnow site and agreed it was misleading. She also said they had already had complaints about this very subject and that it would be addressed as soon as possible. Warwickhunt, PM me and I'll give you her direct contact info. I am sure she will sort out a refund for you.
 15. "I managed to put up with your onslaught for 10 minutes and then had to leave the building." Well... I know people in music magazines have been caught out writing reviews for gigs they didn't attend (and where something noteworthy happened, like the band cancelled) but this guy also managed to assess your (presumably) 2x45 minute sets from just 10 minutes. Whats that? half a song? That really is a skill.. How did he know you didn't play a G13 #9 later on in the evening? Keep it going, I'm really enjoying this thread, especially as I often offer advice to bands
 16.
hmmm..... Im open to offers
Still got it?
 17.
Seeing as he seems to think he's really good, just ask him when his next gig is so you and the band can come and get some pointers. Be really civil and not a single bad comment or snide remark. If he has a gig and tells you: Go and heckle the c*** off the stage. If not, reply that it's a shame, but at least you're out and about doing gigs no matter how bad you are, after all, music isn't about technique or being good, it's about getting people to enjoy themselves, which it seems alot of people were doing at the gig, and something he's not doing while sitting at home and insulting bands which he hasn't even got the bollocks to say to their faces.
Perhaps it's a strage way of auditioning for that "3rd guitarist" spot he suggested ...
 18.
We played one once, and they gave us a list of the things the bands were being judged on. Last on the list was "number of people who showed up to watch you". They were asking the audience, as they turned up, who they had come to support. So basically, it was a local popularity contest.
Well der... Of course it is, just like every time you play a pub gig and want to be booked back: Pull a crowd -> get more gigs. What do you think they judge them on? The number of notes in each bar of the lead break or your interesting use of polymodal chromaticism? It's really back to the ol' theme again. if you aren't entertaining enough or organised enough to draw a crowd then you need to review your modus operandi and reason d'etre too ..
 19.
Every botb i've been to or played at have had questionable results. We played one once, and they gave us a list of the things the bands were being judged on. Last on the list was "number of people who showed up to watch you". They were asking the audience, as they turned up, who they had come to support. So basically, it was a local popularity contest. The only way to enjoy BOTB's (as someone already said) is to treat it as a normal gig. That way you won't be annoyed when some crap band takes home the prize.
or ....... You can play them at their own game: Really turn on the show for that 20 minutes, polish it until it shines, go on and play as if you are playing Wembley stadium. Get organised so you can take more mates than anyone else to every BOTB you enter, be more entertaining than anyone else .. then you may not "win" but if you then flyer everyone else in the room you should get the other bands' crowds interested in you as well and along to your normal gigs ... Do that enough and you can forget the BOTB's or pick and choose the ones you go in for. Given the way most bands approach BOTB gigs it's easy to look so much better than most who think their inherent talent will shine out, even if they don't actually do any work towards honing it or bother take any mates along ....
 20.
It is with huge relief that I can report that, as the seller did not respond to my email, I didn't have to risk life and limb at the weekend. Chris
Awwww and I had such a nice Obituary written ready .... Sadly the listing has gone so I was unable to enjoy the full experience .. Sounded like a really class auction though
 21.
You're putting on a show. Be a showman, that's what it's all about. if the judges really are professional, they won't care how many strings you're using, they just want to be entertained.
+1 Cynically, BOTB's are generally won by the most entertaining band that takes the most supporters. Do that and the number of strings or height of your singer will not matter.
 22.
Bassmandan. I would love to see your Flugelhorn
Remember we are watching you ...
 23.
Keep eyeing up a soprano sax... But I've never done any wind seriously. Could be a challenge
You can get a reasonable Soprano sax for a few hundred quid these days but Sopranos are monsters for tuning and sounding terrible. Even John Coltrane had problems playing soprano in tune. No one should start their sax life on one. Get a tenor first. Article about Sopranos and cheap but good saxes So to the thread. Bass for 30+ years Sax for 15 years. Primarily Baritone. I have a 1963 Selmer Mk 6 low A. Stunning instrument. My tenor is a King Silversonic from '67. Soprano is a 2001 Yanigasawa 901; Alto is some kind of East German thing. I only use it to busk I also play didgeridoo, recorders (yamaha), penny whistle and percussion. I can sing but I can't remember the words (thanks, God)
 24. Welcome Emmanuel, I'm pretty good at the typos myself but I would reiterate what has been said about making the effort to make your posts easily legible. A few capital letters, full stops and paragraphs in your posts will mean more people will read them. The benefit to you is that you are more likely to get helpful replies (in English as well as Welsh) Meanwhile +1 on keep practicing, find other people to play with and the progress will come
 25.
Lovely story. My grandad is miserable old git and insists that he is leaving me his musical armoury. He plays the 'kin accordian!!!!!!!!!! I'll be up to my boxxocks in the things. Wanna trade Grandads? Apart from their choice of instrument they seem quite similar. I'll chuck in a set of strings for that nice MM of yours If your ever lookin for an accordian...................................
ha ha actually some accordions are worth a packet, easily as much as a classic bass .. You should be able to buy quite a few with the proceeds, and I'm sure he'd rather you used the legacy to actually make music .. yes, of course he would What's the difference between a melodeon and an accordion? The accordion will burn for longer ...
