4.
Cheers OG I've seen fareast, but he never actually seems to have anything that isn't sold (although I haven't contacted him direct). As for import costs - that's all cool. I've seen the thread a few times and I've imported stuff meself and I think it's no more difficult that buying from within the UK
Well as a result of looking at this again I suddenly got all gassed for a Jazz again ... I'll have to go and play one to get over it

 6. Oh yes I think so .... I told her I'd publicise it on "a music forum where several hundred people are following this story" but she asked me to just say people can PM me for the contact details I think this subject desrves a pinned thread - good and bad couriers.. OG

Get two people with common sense talking and things are fairly sorted out quickly and efficiently.
Zactly!
 9. + for Tredders. Very patient over the Post Office Killed This Bass Debacle. Thanks Mark OG
 10. Well what do you know ! I finally found the Sensible Human Been left in the Post Office Customer Services department - she's the woman who manages the office where complaints that get to the Chairman's office get handled ..... So, finally: The Correct Result .. They have paid for the bass and £25 for my phone calls "as a gesture of goodwill". Lots of apologies for the way it was handled and for not turning the bass away at the counter in the first place for being under wrapped or over size (which is what should have happened really.) And promises to ask the claims assessors to judge wrapping by their published public domain information rather than something someone made up for guitars, to look at adding something specific about wrapping musical instruments to their published guidance and an open invitation to call her directly if anything like this happens again. "I'd have paid out at supervisor level" she said .. So there you go. I guess hanging on like a Rottweiler does get results sometimes .. Thanks to all who helped and who listened to me ranting. Thanks to tredders fro his patience and support and a special big up to The Funk for legal advice. regards, OG

 12.
Ovation Celebrity sounds pretty good but isnt really big enough to be loud. Plugged in tho'...... its excellent!
Does that have the bowl back? They are an acquired taste - certainly not a style to buy without trying as I found they hang in a strange way when playing standing up. Or maybe it's a side effect of my slightly "Traditionally Built" physique
 13. I'm not surprised your powerblock is unable to run the 1212L very well ... It's a 850 or 1000 watt cabinet I'm using the Markbass LMK 500 watt amp into my 4ohm 1212L. I wanted the two channels. It's a superb combination. I tried it with the EQ flat but my passive P5 doesn't have quite enough natural top so a little boost there sorted that (for the growly punch channel) the other channel I set to full on bass and zero mid and top for the reggae bits of our set. I then balance the volumes. When I switch from one to the other the difference is incredible. The bass channel can make the whole room rumble and literally flap my trousers.. It always gets some jaw drops and the search for the 2x18 cab I must have hidden somewhere .. people just cannot believe it I like that effect.. Sometimes the LMK is a tad too clean so a touch of SVT from my Zoom B2.1u is useful. The tweeter setting can make a significant difference so have a play with it ... Has anyone sourced a flatter knob for the tweeter control? I too worry about it getting damaged or pushed into the cab if the cab is accidentally placed on its back. OG

 15.
if you hunt through the for sale section, OldGit has a crafter up for sale I think. I've had the same model in the past and they're very nice. Don't expect it to have the same volume as an acoustic guitar though because they (acoustic basses in general, not just Crafters) don't, unless you get an upright of course....... edit: the link is here
Thanks for the mention, Steve I have the Crafter BA400 for £150 + shipping, as in that link, and a Tanglewood Resonator acoustic bass for sale (that's £120 + shipping), PM me if you are interested and I'll take some pictures of the resonator.. As Steve says no acoustic bass will keep up with a heaviliy strummed pair of acoustic guitars because the bodies just arent big enough. You'd need one the size of an upright to do that (or one of those Mexican things..) The Tanglewood resonator is louder but, of course, it sounds different. It's got a great "Upright bass" sound when plugged in though Oh and a friend of mine has a Kiff pointy acoustic bass as in that link. It's no louder but it gets a load of attention when he plays it. Cheers, OG

 17.
Which is why jazz is such a broad church. You obviously can't have a big band all improvising. I dont consider most big bands to be jazz - there is a big difference between dance bands like Glenn Miller and the god like genius of Duke Ellington. When I played jazz at school we were an un-official band and nothing was scored. But then schools did not usually have jazz bands back then. The school I went to had an orchestra and a brass band but no jazz band, but I think that jazz bands have replaced the brass bands (at my old school) - or you could say its a brass band with some reeds playing jazz music. One of the good things about being un-official was that we could play what we wanted but still appeared at all the school concerts where the head, who was a jazz buff and supported us against the music dept who were not entirely happy, would sit in the front row. You should have seen his face when we started to play Whinin Boy Blues
Well it's been a while since I was at school but I assumed "school jazz band" would be a big band playing scores. I've played Duke Ellington stuff - in a big band- it may have been improvised when it was recorded but then some nice people have taken the records and transcribed the arrangements note for note. So yeah Jazz can be improvised over a theme but if everyone improvised in big band stuff, it's so complex and the harmonies are so well thought out and symbiotic that impro would generally make it sound less good.
 18.
Why? Lots of jazz is just improvision over a basic pattern. OK the Duke and Miles might have scored stuff but they were the exeption.
You Jest! Big band jazz stuff is scored very precisely
 19.
Still waiting! I gigged last night and I am going to miss playing my 75 Jazz!
Yeah.. for about 30 nanoseconds
 20.
Yep. I really wanted that passive tone. If Jon's routed for a future pre-amp, that's great. Although its got LEDs, so I assumed the extra route was for that.
Looks like a double battery route at the top there .. may not be, of course You only need one for the lights, assuming they are "normal" ones and not light show flashers
 21. Yeee ha! My Nordstrand DC5 Pickups have arrived.. After hearing about the long wait for Jon's other Nordstrand powered bass builds I was rather glad to be getting mine from Enrico at www.WTBasses.net in Italy. I'm having the new chrome/silver Shuker signature on the headstock. It will look fabbo against the capping wood. So this weekend's question is whether to have a little custom design transfer on the headstock. It won't be as visible on the darker wood as the one on my P5 is but I liked Tom's subtle one ... hummmmmmm
 22. That's looking fabbo ... Gosh I am so glad I got the Nordtrand pups for my new Shuker from somewhere else - and they had them in stock I think the delivery delay is due to the really big increase in demand they've had over the last year. The cases arrive on Monday and I think they'll be about the same price as normal Hiscox. They are the shaped ones rather than the big teardrops that I prefer. That's shame as I'd like to have a shuker badged case... I suggested that Jon ask Hiscox to fit strap D rings so that you can add a strap and sling it over your shoulder to reduce the trips to the car at gigs. If he didn't manage to get them fitted Hiscox will sell you D rings and send directions for where to rivet them on. They did that for me .
 23.
He should be painting it in the next week or so. I haven't been this excited since my dad bought me a Raleigh Chopper
ha ha You don't mention a Pre unless I missed it so if it's passive, it's good that he has routed it for two batteries so you can add an active pre-amp if you want to I had him do that to my P5 too. Not that I imagine ever needing to electrify it - it sounds brill anyway.
 24.
ummmmm.. I'd love to do one.. but my web skills are aweful! I had a chat with Si' about it at the time and would have to ask for his abilities. I wondered if one of those online galleries would have been a good idea? Buying a domain name is child's play, so at least a site could have a meaningful name. Dan
We'd need some webbie skills say from Alun? I think he can actually build the things ... I'm a consultant mate, I don't actually do anything of course
 25.
Led side dots - orange P/J pickups, P as JJ Burnel, J wound to match
Excellent! I've got teh JJ Burnell puppie on my P5 (well the 5 string version .. It's excellent) Jon's great but you will have to nag him for pics ...
