2.
Just the Way You Are, Barry White version. Miles and miles better than Billy Joel's original. Also, Cassandra Wilson's version of Shelter from the Storm by Dylan. In fact, I'll go so far as to say that Dylan's songs are almost always better when done by other people. Controversy? Perhaps.
Yeah Mr Tamborine Man The Byrds Blinded by the Light: Manfred Man's Earthband

 6.
Hmmm but which came first, the chicken or the egg? I think Marvin's version was recorded before Gladys' version but they were released the other way around. And I don't think either was the original recording of the song, seem to recall reading that it had been kicking about for a while before either of these two recorded it.
yeah see the edit or wikipedia...
 7.
Not so... many years back I saw a band in an hotel in Jakarta play an absolutely blinding version of this... they had all the vocal harmony parts spot-on, everything. It was brilliant, I mean goose-bumpingly good.
Ah don't they have "special people" to sing that high in Indonesia?
 8.
Sinnead O'Connor - Nothing Compares 2 U
+1 on that
 9. Marvin Gaye's "I Heard it through the Grapevine" .. Gladys Knight's original is fab but Marvin Gaye just got it spot on right ... Edit. I just read the Wikipedia history of the song and it seems Marvin's was version 3 and Gladys' version 4 of the song cos Berry Gordy vetoed the release of the Marvin version So Marvin's is still a cover (of the Smokey Robinson and the Miracles version) :0 I wonder how many other Motown songs did that kind of run around. No wonder there's confusion over who's playing bass on the hits.

 11.
Don't be silly, it's just that there's something of a 'clogging' of venues where I live (Kent) with the same old regurgitated tripe again and again; it's driving people away.
Oh back to that ol' thing again .. In what way are venues clogged with covers bands driving people away? If you were entertaining enough to fill your local venue on a weekend with your originals band the venues would book you over the same ol' covers bands any day. Covers sell tickets and beer, originals (on the whole) do not. There's no rules for covers. If you can play a good version and make it entertaining then give it a go. Hey Joe by Hendrix is a cover, Green Onions by Booker T is a cover, half of the lemon Song by Led Zep is a cover, The Who did Summertime Blues (The definitive version in my book), Tom Waits songs are covered all the time and, arguably, are more accessible once someone like Rod Stuart has chipped the fantastic melodies out of Tom's somewhat idiosyncratic versions, and Tom Waits does cover versions too .... I'm sure some of the contemporary beat combos play covers ... People do like familiar things (hence the huge rise of the tribute market) and, let's face it, how many people on here have ever written anything nearly as good as Johnnie B Good, Mustang Sally, Brown Eyed girl, Stairway to Heaven, Bohemian Rhapsody, Love will tear us apart, Teen Spirit etc etc etc.. not me, that's for sure.
 12.
"No Stairway!!! Denied!!!"
Try the Zappa version from "The Best Band You Never Heard In Your Life" CD . Excellent. Big horn section playing the solo Actually there's loads of good covers on that CD including Purple Haze, Sunshine of your love oh and Ring of Fire reggae stylee ... Somewhat turgid Cellphone vid of Stairway live here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7vEmQnExY0c
 13.
The old cliche is "Alright Now" - bollox I say, play and be damned.
I've just got the Queen + Paul Rogers live CD and the Queen numbers are pretty good but the Free/Bad Co ones are missing crucial figures in the drumming, particularly the bass drum work. It's a shame as in Alright Now for example, some of the vocal rhythms lock into the bass drum patterns and when they are missing it sounds odd. The bass player and extra guitarist in the band are obviously used to doing karaoke versions of Can't get enough and Wishing Well etc but Roger Taylor seems to either unable to do it or - it feels like - to be saying "sod the way it was recorded, I'm doing it my way". It's odd but it spoils a pretty good album for me (that and Paul Rogers' crass cabaret introductions "It was all right when I wrote the lyrics to this next tune and its All Right Now" (oh pu-leeeese!)

 16.
Over rated means all the people that think The Who were the greatest are wrong - unless my understanding of the english language has changed. Homer is right - it is impossible to compare todays crap bands with the greats of the past.
Ah I see we were agreeing with each other then.. yeah It's also impossible to compare the crap bands of the day with the 'oo, Hendrix, the Stones and other rock pioneers ... It was interesting to see the list of the proto-rock bands like the Yardbirds, Cream etc. The big big difference with the Who and Jimi) was the showmanship. They were more famous in their day(in the Daily Mail anyway) for Pete smashing guitars, Moonie smashing drums (and dipping the headlights of his Rolls Royce - in a pool), Rog swinging his mic around his head and Entwhisle standing stock still and a carrying on whilst the rest all did their wild things all around him The stutter in My Generation was as revolutionary in its day as The pistols swearing on the telly at tea time.

 18.
"and overated...hmmm"
Well that was me and I was merely commenting on the choice of word ... It's a valid opinion, of course, just as everyone else's' is. and no, I absolutely don't think that everyone should like the Who or think Entwhistle was god on a bass .. The point of this thread was simply that if people don't know the Who except for the tepid contemporary renditions of former glories by the two old men we see now, perhaps this film from the time when they were certainly contenders for the epithet " biggest rock band in the world" may just enlighten them. Thasssss alll
 19.
MB1. Still cant get over the guy who bought that Wal in the cash convertors in Bolton for £120,seems the guy in the know, hadnt been to Bolton for quite some time. The guy who bought it then went on to sell it for £1200 on Ebay!.Being in the right place at the right time?....
Yeah a friend of mine was 3 places back in the queue for Smith 6 string bass on sale for £120 ...
 20.
i think normal neglect looks better than when you try to batter it anyway, seems more natural and realistic than "relics".
Sure but playing wear is different to the sort neglect it gets under a bed or in a teenagers bedroom for a year without a case .. They had a SG shaped Les Paul special in last week at £70 .. when I went back it had become 100 quid "oh the bloke that knows about guitars has been round" they said Sadly he has priced it right ... again no offers for 12 weeks ... That had wear and tear from being played - the plating was worn off the humbuckers etc .. That's Ok but the Jazz has the kind of damage you get when the kid just doen't care .. Anyway it will sell at £90 as its a piece of gold compared to the rest of the basses they get ...
 21.
(puts tin hat on) I personally think the Who were overated....don't get me wrong...I love the singles...."Won't get fooled again", "Who are you?" , "My Generation", "I can see for miles" are all amazing tracks. It's just that beyond the singles I can't find much to float my boat i'm afraid. Still they were still better than The Beatles (ducks for cover)
Overrated? Hummmmm Actually I too don't really like about 50% of The Who's stuff but of the rest I think 40% is damn fine and 10% is absolutely outstanding.
 22.
and i'd still offer them 25% less than that as a starting point!!
Tried that .. "It's got to be in for 12 weeks before we will take an offer" It's £90 and battered and not a nice battered .. just normal neglect .. Thanks Chaps
 23. Hi There's a Squier 20th Anniversary Jazz in my local crack converter so I'd like an idea of it's value .. It's sunburst, three chrome knobs, rosewood f/b, made in Indonesia .. Any idea? Thanks
 24.
I have two potential swap/trades in the offing but I'd soon have the cash to kit out my Warwicks with new preamps (yes, the J-retro is that good it's making me change the preamps in all of my Warwicks). I believe this'll be the final bump back to the top! Compare the price of the various other J & P basses here and on eBay (Jap ones for £100 less than this USA...) and you'll see that this is pretty good value and if you come and try it you will be knocked out by the action, playability and tone; with or without the J-Retro.
Sound like a great bass .. and I bet yours is cheaper than this one http://www.rareguitars.com/index.cfm?metho...product_id=3133
