I have one of the no name P basses, they are good quality, but the point was more that people could go to one of the places that sells them to try, they used to be all over the place.
Yeah but ... how do I know that the no name I'm trying is the same as the one you are recommending?
 2.
There are quite a few SX basses on sale here in Dublin, at Waltons - haven't seriously considered them. You can see the prices here: it would be more cost-effective to import from, well, just about anywhere else.
I worked out the figures for the basic jazz .. They are $119 from Rondo, 179 euro from Waltons. Either works out about £145 shipped and duty paid. If the duty hounds don't get you it would be about £102 from Rondo.
 3.
Not at all. If he's lowered his reserve this time it could be a nice purchase, so thanks for the heads up!
I reckon that would be a good buy at under £200 ..
 4. Really Jon should set expectations better. That's the main problem here Had he said "It will be (whatever he said x 2)months and I'm crap on email so phone me, OK?" Then we all be ecstatically happy with exactly the same build times and email response. MikeB has summed it up. Jon is not good on email or taking and sending pictures. Some people seem to excel at that end of things, AND make great bases but - at these prices? I don't think you can have it all. I also don't think he could emply some cheap labour to do the admin, take teh pictures and reply to emails either - whoever it was would have to ask Jon for the answers anyway. It's frustrating if you are doing it all without any personal contact. However, I would echo that the end result is well worth this tiny little aggravating part of the relationship and 5 minutes after you strap it on all will be forgotten. I think this forum and others have driven demand for his services up this year, possibly to the point where he will have to start quoting higher prices and longer build times to control the demand. Be thankful you got in now. During my first Shuker build I waited 3 extra months because the pickup maker was having problems making the 3+2 precision pickup work well enough to meet Jon's very high standards. I was tearing my hair out but that extra three months is a mere drop in the muddy puddle of life compared to the 20+ years I intend to play this bass for. Keep the faith and thank gawd you havn't ordered a WAL ... OG
 5.
Check out the SX Stingray on the Waltons site... Active circuitry, 3-band EQ, Ash body. They've even got the 6-bolt neck and all for £265. Would love to play one to feel what they are like to play.
Waltons emailed me their list - some nice stuff - BUT "We don't sell SX basses outside of Ireland" "I wouldn't bother with SX, just get the no name basses you can find in places around the UK like bass centre." Normally I'd agree but there are just too many people reporting stories like Neil's here about gently modding these and ending up with a fine bass. Anyway at a total cost including mods of about £150, it's hardly a huge risk and they have such a reputation that selling one on shoulln't be too hard.
 6. Ho ho and he was expecting brown eyed girl?
 7. ooh! How many gigs does the band do Sean? Just lorve that music .. OG
 8. Oooooh getting that "almost there" feeling
 9.
Yes mate, I have 2 rods fro the 12th fret up into towards the bridge to keep the tp half of the neck flatter and another 2 ods that run the whole length of he neck, on the outsides. I think it's probably over kill.. but playability is pretty damn brilliant! (I like a very low action, you see!)
is that 4 truss rods Dood? No wonder you coudln't fit any lights in that neck .. what with that, the mandlebrots and the arrester cables .....
 10.
Classic colour combo mate, keep us posted. Im waiting for Rondo to get some more Precisions in now!!!
Neil, How's the neck lacquer? Some have said it's sticky and benefits from a sesh with some 400 grit .. Cheers, OG
 11.
The SX basses in the starter packs are a little different to the ones from Rondo. The starter pack basses all have 21 frets for a start.
Ah Ok much as think 21 frets is actually the True Way, a real Rondo SX is a much more attractive option. Thanks
 12.
Bloody hell, at last, something worth going to a music show for. Nice. I still won't be going though... diary clash. Si, lots of pics please. :-D
Sure. Any specific requests?

 14. My mate was third in line for a Smith 6 string bass for £120 (with case) last year .... I got my 1962 P bass for £110 in a junk shop (in 1973 or so) sadly it was re-cycled into the community about 10 years later ....
 15.
It's a good point actually OG, I'd prefer if I was buying a bass to have it insured for the full amont, any recommendations?
Well that's what this whole thread is about. Have a look at message number one where Paul is keeping score.

 18.
Classic colour combo mate, keep us posted. Im waiting for Rondo to get some more Precisions in now!!!
I may be up for one of these too .. Gamlins in Cardiff had some SX Jazz bass starter kits about 18 months ago... They don't have them listed on their website now (have the guitar pack though) so it may be worth a call before shipping in from the US ... 02920 220828 I asked them about other models but they have to make up a big order and one-offs don't work out cheap enough. However they may be putting in their Christmas order and may be willing to add a few specials to that. Worth the question They used to have a really flamboyant Jazz with pearl s/p and gold hardware .. I can't see that on the Rondo site, mind you I don't see any 5's either but their ebay shop as them listed. Also on ebay but in the UK is this listing for an SX Jazz bass starter kit in Red for £120 including practice amp and delivery .. eBay UK SX Jazz Bass pack I did A-B the SX jazz like this one and the Squier they had (not a VM) and teh Squire felt better (but was over twice the price) The SX felt Ok Their own Jim Deacon £120 '62 Precision is very good, especially at that price. Oh and don't forget the effect having a well cut bone nut can have on a budget bass. Well worth the money.

We don't really have a target audience as such, but we like to have a mix of songs that would appeal to most. Do you have to attract the audience yourself or does someone else do that? Pretty much the type of stuff thats listed in our sets.

OK, That helps. Some great suggestions so far .. I'd suggest raiding the songbooks of all the three piece bands for their big hits: The Who Zed Zed Top The Jam Free Bad Co Queen I've seen a band with your line up do some off the wall things that work really well too: Sweet Nothings (by Brenda Lee) Reet Petite and Gone (Loius Jordan) Caledonia (BB King version) Poppa was a Rolling Stone Move on Up Cheers, OG
 21.
Mines at the same stage as well so we've got a 3-way race to the finish line.
Oh goodness ... That's a 4 way race ... 22.
Cheers OG, It's in a hard case, I'll get some heavy duty cardboard and bubble wrap. It's worth more than £150 though.
Then I'd recommend you don't use Parcelforce. If anything goes wrong you'll have no claim. It clearly states on their website that £150 is the maximum insurable value for musical instruments. The Parcelforce web page that says £150 is the maximum you can insure a musical instrument for .. Read the paragraph headed "Prevent movement of items in transit". With so many other options, why take the risk?

 25. Actually the last time I was trying basses in a music shop they had a concert Video running as I started .. some young turks I didn't recognise - after a while I realised I couldn't really compete so I started playing along to it ... the staff turned the video volume up ...
