My *next* wedding! OK mate, you got it. Could you also learn 'too drunk to f***' by the Snivelling Shits and Mozart's Horn Concerto - between them that should please both families.
We've done the horn concherto before - had a mate who played French horn so we arranged it for a set dance we do.... Went down well I'll look into the other one though you never knwo when someone will shout for it
see mate, a passionate debate we started here!! I say do it! (but im lucky as its up to me what i do at a gig) www.bsharpduo.co.uk Anyway im gonna put a little drum trck together gig it at the weekend, with some flash bass, and let you all know what the hell happens!! haha
ha ha yeah The subject of "when drums stop it's really, really badnews .. It's.... the bass solo" always stirs some hornets up. When you put www.bsharpduo.co.uk add the http:// bit too and it makes it a link like this http://www.bsharpduo.co.uk Bit more traffic when there's just a single click
MB1. That Steeleye Span Tune??????............All Around My Hat?????????
That's why the Blackleg Miner is such a surprise to geeps .. "But they are a folk band and did that Womble thing" is about the limit of their knowledge .. Musicians are musicians and Rick Kemp can play funk ... I'm co-front man in my band and we also have a lot of time where we are setting up dances. This is "entertain the audience" time without it being play a tune time. Once we are getting on well with a crowd I'll tease them with various well known bass lines whilst they guess what they are. The Chain, of course, Walk on the wild side, Peaches, Dancing in the moonlight, Money etc .. then they will start yelling suggestions for tunes for us to play. As a folk band we are always being asked for smoke on the water and stairway. As our usual guitarist is a folker he tends to duck these so I hit the distort and wah wah pedals and play intros or lead breaks or whatever. I get to play the intro to Honky Tonk woman too, and the horn parts on Mustang Sally, as well as the bass lines of course ... and back at teh folk we play various trad tunes where three of us play the melody, harmony and alone. It's a folkin' tradition.
I wouldn't mind being able to do this if someone said "play something for us boy!!" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DN4ExKyPydk...feature=related
Had me perplexed for a bit until I read that he's pre-recorded a track on a loop first Still it's very nice A bass player mate used to crack out the Captain Pugwash tune.
That steeleye span tune though, I'd love to hear it at a wedding. But then I like a bit of politics in my music.
Book us for your next one and we'll play it (floor fills with the two families fighting over what really killed the UK coal industry )
Nor had I until I got one from The Flaming Moes (Sweden) earlier this year
Jumping in on a very old thread, Hope you guys are all still here ... - Flaming Moes? certainly one of the best Simpsons episodes ever - Did you bin your PD7? I may be looking to buy one - Colda, can you show us an example of the stuff hey specified in some way? I'd love to please the sound man when we use one. As a sax player I suffered from poor attitudes and monitors for years before having a lesson from a good sound man on what to ask for. That guy worked with us a number of times and remembered our preferences every time -The soundcheck then consisted of half a tune's run through - in total. Genius and everyone was so much happier. He also made sure he sent his runner up to the stage to check everyone was happy with the monitor mix after the first number. If you've ever tried to communicate "can I have a tad less bass and a little more 2k on this monitor here, please" with a sound man at the back of a dark hall when he seems to have his head down over his knobs for the first 15 minutes you'll appreciate how good that was for us. Better stage sound > Happier band > better gig > more appreciative crowd > praise and more work for the sound man (and band)
That would be a great start, thanks! The problem you mentioned is the main one I'm worried about. I would have to buy a neck as well, so don't know what those dimensions are either. What am I getting myself into...??
Oh just buy a yamaha BB

oooh hang on can we bring this back from another discussion of "do you think the bass player should do a solo?" I think we have covered that several times and I'm on the side of the majority. I do play a bass solo when introduced at wedding gigs - it's over the verse part of "Coming round the mountain when she comes" and is mostly the Pagannini cello riff from the South Bank Show intro, but it's less than a minute long That's plenty. What I'm really talking about here is when someone says "play something for us" and you reach for the bass ...
I've got side LEDs on my Alembic. I thought they were a bit gimmicky until I used them on a really dark stage, then they were great. I don't look at my hands very much but the glances were made easy by the lights
I had side LEDs on my Shuker cos I thought it added a touch of luxury and for those very occasional dark stage gigs. However I use them all the time except for daylight gigs, and I play even less of those than totally dark ones. In the murk of a normal stage with some stage lighting they are a god send for finding the right note to start the next tune. Once a tune is running I don't usually need them unless there's a leap from 3rd to 15th or whatever but having them as a safety net is really helpful. Oh and on my Shuker P5 it's the only thing civilians comment on, if they even notice them
Linus27 - I know you were considering an Ashdown MAG300 C115. I've got one and as a bread and butter amp it's been pretty good and even without an extension cab I found I could keep up with our drummer OK (in fact we mic his bass drum and stick that through the PA) and he's got quite a decent loud Sonor kit. However, I've recently built a Bill Fitzmaurice Omni 10 which is a horn loaded 2 x 10" with 4 piezo horns. That cost me about £220 to build but that includes 2 good quality Eminence Neodynium drivers of the sort of quality you probably won't get in a commercially produced cab for twice that cost. I then bought a rather old but perfectly working Hughes & Kettner Bassbase 250 head (from Warwickhunt who frequents this forum) for £125. That can put out 250w into the 4 ohm Omni 10 (which can handle up to 500w). The Omni 10 is very efficient so you get plenty of SPL per watt. That is a big factor as has been mentioned in previous postings - it's not totally about power. I now think that for about £345 I've got a really nice set up. I don't know if you would consider a build your own cab but it's a good option if you feel able and there's good heads to be had for reasonable money. What struck me most though is the bass response from the Omni 10. When I first bought the MAG combo I plumped for the 1 x 15" because it seemed to have more bottom - I didn't like the 2 x 10" version as much. However, the Omni10 seems to have far more bottom end (maybe just perceptually) than the Ashdown 1 x 15" and a Trace Elliott 1 x 15" that I borrowed recently. Some of this may be due to the tone of the H&K amp which has a valve pre-amp that must impart some nice tonal quality. So, use your ears when deciding on a cab. My experience here is that it's not always true that a 1 x 15" will have more bottom that a 2 x 10" - there's too many other factors. Mike PS My Ashdown's going up for sale now. The transformer blew but Ashdown fixed that - I think you've seen the thread. I wouldn't make a salesman would I?
Doesn't someone on here build Omni's for people?
I've just had a long conversation with the importer of SX bass guitars into this country. I pointed out there were a large number of UK bassists personally importing from the USA because they could not get the SX Basses they wanted over here. He says they do bring 8000 over a year, many under the Jim Deacon brand and there are a network of Dealers in this country who stock them. I made a plea for the more Vintage type ones, both P & J types and the 5 stringers too. I am speaking to one of the Jim Deacon Dealers tomorrow around this subject so watch this space. It would be good to be able to order an SX from this country, get a guarantee and support a local music shop.
Rats! then everyone will know its a 100 quid bass
I know Neil_B said they did, but I thought I better tell you about this. I was thinking about joining the SX club after falling in love with the picture of the all black PJ, but it's got to be a 5 string for me. I decided to mail Kurt and ask him if they were likely to get one in - this is the reply I got (including typos!): " Thans - no I don't think it's likely they will have a 5 SPJ - no easy source of a 5 string P pickup Kurt " Can I ask you all a (possibly dumb-ass) question here - if I bought the 4 string, would I be able to fit a five string neck and bridge without needing major surgery? I have seen custom 5-string P pickups which I would want to fit anyway. This would definitely be a long-term customisation if I did go for it.
The show stopper would be if the 5 string neck didn't fit the 4 string P neck pocket. I can measure my precion pocket if you want a rough estimate.

This came up in another thread when talking about music shop twiddlers, slappers and the shy and mighty amongst us .. However the question is ... How do you show civilians the true potential of the bass without appearing to be a flash twonk? Do you have a party piece that works in your band or Duo? Do you have a solo piece that you play when someone just insists at a party? Do you have a piece you play at family musical gatherings? Given the opportunity my wife and I play a medley of my original tunes on bass and flute with the bass taking the melody for some of the time. Once we get a piano that's in tune and my lessons have progressed far enough I feel some Bach for Bass pieces will get added to that as well .. For famous people, I have a favourite example from an unexpected source: Steeleye Span's live version of Blackleg Miner from the "Present" CD with Rick Kemp slapping and popping his slightly flanged Overwater .. - Now That's What I Call Folk 'n Roll. We'd play it in my band if it wasn't so overtly political. I'm looking for a similar opportunity that will still work at a wedding Listen here (you get 2 or 3 listens of teh whole track for free) http://www.last.fm/music/Steeleye+Span/_/Blackleg+Miner
to be honest i have not been there that long, and i don't work on Saturday as i gig and stuff, but i guess I'm open minded about that sort of thing and don't really think or know if its there fav lick! But i was thinking, how many of us get to do what we want in a covers band loud? Could it be that its a chance to have a good blst with good gear without the neighbours shouting?? I remember years ago, i did play my best licks in shops, but for me it was to gain confidence in doing tech stuff in a public place, as i am really quite shy as a person. But its funny cos i was thinking that i may put together a 2 min backing track to do some flashy stuff live at the start of the 2nd set. Thats cos i feel that the bass has so much to offer in terms of an instrument, and it may open the minds more to others out there to just how wonderful a bass really is, but where does that sit on this debate?? www.bsharpduo.co.uk
Good point. I guess some people don't gig or even get to a rehearsal studio very often. There is no real substitute for the thump in the chest/guts/ears you get from playing a bass loud. Hum that tangent needs its own thread (I'll start it) - how do you show civilians the true potential of the bass without appearing to be a flash twonk? Depends on your band or other public performance opportunities. I have a favourite example from an unexpected source: Steeleye Span live version of Blackleg Miner from the "Present" CD with Rick Kemp slapping and popping his slightly flanged Overwater .. - Now That's What I Can Folk. We'd play it in my band if it wasn't so overtly political.
Missed the bash unfortunately ¬_¬ But then again, I wouldn't have had this bass to take either. Hah, I think I'm numb to the wait now Went with the 'simple' option for the EQ. I'm guessing he'll want me to come down to tweak the settings a bit before installing it all properly at some point. Just waiting on word from Jon on more progress really.
If you are having the Shuker EQ with the mid trimpot in the cavity ask him to put a hole in the cavity cover so you can adjust it without taking the cover off .. In the end I had to drill a hole to do it and I am sure Jon would have done a better job ...

Some people only ever play in shops .. They also have a few lines they have learned just to play in shops 'cos that's the only "performance" they ever do.
