1. +1 on all of the above Must try a few more out next time, and put my lugplugs in, but it was great to hear my pair of Shukers played so well by other people +1 for playing Mustang Sally on the Doodle My car's almost recovered from transporting Nash' Sunn head. Thanks to Nash for riding shot gun and for patiently listening to my rambling
  2.
you need more imagination, just think of it with some wheels and a tinfoil radiator and before you know it you're in Dresden 1965... Am I the only one who can see this...?
Oh hang on I think I did see something like this on stage with U2 in Cardiff many years ago ... Was that a Trabant?

    BASS BASH MARCH 2008

    Sarnies? Yum Yes please
  4. I'll be there with Nash and his mate Dave from about 2... OG
  5. You should get a TottyCaster sorry, TaityCaster name decal made up - Jon can do it if you ask him nicely Oh and a nice wide strap will help with the weight problem, and a little with the neck diving too. All in all that's a brilliant thread and result. Well done!
  6. Crackin' tale NEXT!!!!!!!
  7.
Lakland... Basses played exclusively by the inhabitants of Lak-Land. (A bit like LapLand but with far fewer toys at Christmas!)
and much less interesting national dancing
  8.
Shame I missed that one.
Yeah
  9.
Thanks for the info OG but I've thankfully cured any Fodera-pangs with the arrival of the Sei - it's plays and sounds as close as i could hope for - Fodera's do have wonderful woods and great tone on them but I think we all know luthiers who can glue, carve, sand and finish basses just as well as Vinnie and Joey... See you at the Bash? Cheers Mike
yep Yes I'll be there with my Shuks and SX ..
  10.
With regards to electronics, I'm not the most knowledgable man in the world. So I told Jon what I wanted it to sound like and that I wanted it passive, and away he went to work something out. I basically asked him for an aggressive tone I'll be using with a pick (think JJ Burnel, but not quite that aggressive!), and a smoother jazzy tone, for when the aggressive sound would stick out like a sore thumb. That's all I want from it, though I'm aware they are two distinctly different sounds. Jon's given me a choice now though. Either have one rotary knob which has 2 presets (each with bass, mid and treble control), or 2 knobs - one with 6 different mid settings, and the second with 3 different bass/treble settings. I know I said to him I wanted to keep knobs to a minimum, and I know I said I only wanted two tones from it (so the first option would be the obvious one), but I'm actually stumped for choice on this! You're always tempted by more options, aren't you? :/
Well it's not fixed in stone. Try the simple version first and go back for teh more copmplex one if you then find you want more. As long as there's enough room in the cavity it's not a problem to swap wires over. It's not like changing your mind about the woods ...
  11.
a two or three year wait for a Fodera, quite frankly would do my head in
Ishibashi has an Emporer in its used section if you really want one ... Lots of Yen though ...
  12.
That looks like the very thing. Thanks gents, much appreciated. Pete
They won't totally tame the pesky things. Even with restraints they seem to get up to all sorts of naughtiness in the cable box ...
  13.
afraid not, I've got a gig! (bet you can't guess which bass I'll be playing )
Don't you have to let it hang for a week to let the finish harden?
PS. jon's going, though.
Good news I owe him several beers ..
  14.
Marcus Miller seems to be enjoying playing it.
You have to be very very cool to wear a Porkpie Hat with a track suit. I'd suggest you'd need that amount of cool (or maybe just a tad more) to play that bass in public
  15. Ah so that's what "carving the neck" entails ... It's great to read about all these things . Thanks for bothering.
  16.
I use velcro to tie up my cables. Get a metre of velcro from your local fabric shop, chop it up and use it to tie up your cables - lasts for ever.
+1 Or the velcro cable tags from Ikea or the neat coloured "stay on the cable" ones from Sellotape There was a discussion of this including the plastic cable tidies and the correct way to wind a cable (with video) on another thread. 17.
I have recently sold my Warwick with the view to buying a P bass. But as my son now needs a new car seat I am left with perhaps £230 to spend on a new bass to act as a spare.I am hoping that my budget restrictions mean that I buy a bass owing to the sound and comfort of it,not the name on the headstock. I would be quite happy with a Squire or SX providing they feel and sound OK.
You should certainly also look at the Yamahas, specially if you don't mind used.
  18.
Are Jim Deacon the same as SX as they look very similar to me?
No one knows for sure but they are very similar ...
  19.
have you thought about one of this: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/MIDDLE-BOX-IN-PIC-AL...1QQcmdZViewItem
Cheers, that is a distinct possibility... Heard back from the makers of the original box - no outlets in the UK ... oh boooo
  20.
I reckon OldGit thought about Jam Sessions:)
Zactly...
  21.
Not a clue! Unlike yourself I did not spend a fortune on custom basses to play cheap planks instead. But then I never do gigs where gear is shared and never have. Anyone who turns up for a gig without a bass should f*** off as far as I am concerned. It maybe that these really are cheap planks as good as stuff that is 3 times the price. But I am a cynical old bastard who thinks that if something is too good to be true then it is not true.
Please yourself mate. Love is all around and I hope one day we can have a drink together and discuss it.

    BASS BASH MARCH 2008
I'll be coming on Saturday accompanied by my US Jazz, Peavey Tim Landers Signature five string and possibly my DIY fretless Hartke. Should I bring a my Markbass 2x10 combo too?
Yes please oh if there's not one already on the list.. Best bring a sleeping bag too (the bash is on Sunday)
  23. I deal with beginner gig organisers a lot so when I can I point out that "Band A 8.30 - 9.15. Band B 9.15- 9.45" ain't gonna work .... Then I make sure we are on on time and off on time. Also if you get on 10 mins late, cut ten mins out of the middle rather than cut your fab ending set... If we are booking the other bands we make absolutely sure they know when they have to get off stage then put a poster up in the dressing room and backstage area with timings. Mostly we have to deal with the other timing problem when the support act - the wedding, wedding breakfast and speeches - overrun so we can't get in and set up on time. So we have a hand out we send to all people booking us for weddings suggesting that a laid back wedding day with loads of spare time built in will be nicer for all than a tightly time-controlled wedding day that goes awry all over the place with resultant worry for all (and long wait in the car park for us)
  24.
NY eve just passed we (4 piece rock band) got £500 for a pub gig, our normal fee for the same venue is £200.
Yeah 2.5 times normal, if you want to do the gig... 3 times normal if you don't really want to but would if they pay the extra and £stupidloads if your don't want to do it or don't care either way. Playing at midnight on NYE can be unrewarding and hard work... and you're working when everyone else if getting drunk and having a good time so take that into account. Playing earlier on teh bill can be a hoot 'cos you get to celebrate midnight with your friends in the audience whilst someone else works hard on stage
  25. I've had a > DHA optical valve compressor (not a compressor as we know it from "on board digital compressors" experience) It does something else. > Punch Factory - Ok but not as good as: > Trace Eliott SMX dual band. Used only, the "acoustic" works for bass as well. They go on eBay at about £65 quid. This suited me better 'cos I can compress the bass end a little and leave the delightful ikkle top end notes to soar and fly free like blue birds on the wing YMMV
