Wow, You're a lot faster than Jon Looks like a good project and for that money you get to do it under the watchful eye and guidance of Jon so you will end up with a good bass whatever happens - and in a week!
Blimey, I thought you were coming from Cardiff not Scotland!! Well reminded on the clock front :-) Mark
150 miles / 2.5 hours driving each way .. If all of you midlanders stay off the roads on Sunday I may be able to do it a little faster Oh, will you have the new Wood & Tronicses?
I know nothing about anyone's intentions to rip any one off, but I am sure SX are churned out in the same factory as a lot of other cheap planks and having established quality credentials for the brand it is not beyond possibility that the brand will start appearing on less well made instruments.
Yup It does already. I don't know what the Bass Collection style SXs are like. Anyway if you don't want to play a cheap bass then don't ... simple really. if you do then these are worth a look ... Any other nominations in this price range?

Oh dear Clocks spring forward this Sat ... That means a very early start for us
Contact Bristolbands, they do free showcases at the Fleece for various genres of music. We did that, & managed to get a gig (albeit a Tuesday night one), for next week.
Also get Venue mag and see where people are playing .. The Croft used to send me emails out saying "band wanted, such and such date, such and such style" that would be good to get if they still do it
I would call selling a perfectly good Fender to play SX basses pretty hysterical. I have never played one but they do appear to be budget basses that are a class above similar priced basses in terms of looks and playability, but they are still budget basses and if you put hot pups on one then you have a cheap plank with hot pups. The thing with forums like this is that someone buys an SX and thinks it is good value for money, sticks up a few photos and a review and next thing you know 20 more people have bought one. It is the same with Shukers to a lesser extent - cos of the high profile they have on here people order them instead of using local luthiers - the obvious example being the guy from the same town as Zoot basses - did he even look at Zoot I wonder? Is a Shuker any better than a similar priced Sei, GB, Overwater, RM, Zoot, Manson, ACG etc etc? Back on Bassworld we had Loud cabs, cheap cabs that punched above their weight. Lots of threads from happy punter generated lots more sales and the guy f***ed off with everyones money.
What's the beef Bass Ferret? If you want to promote your preferences go ahead. It's no problem that you like your basses and your luthier. Forums are about sharing opinions and advice. Sure other cheap basses and Luther's are available. If they suit you that's fine, go ahead. I won't be decrying your choices. The SXs are good cheap planks. That's it. If someone prefers one to a Fender then that's their taste and choice. "Still a cheap bass" true but if you only have 200 quid it's a very good option. Actually as they are made of decent tone woods (mine is Swamp ash and pine rather than Basswood or plywood) putting in decent PUPs and electronics may well give it as good a sound as anything else made of those woods .... The cheap bit is because the labour and parts from China are so cheap. A Fender MIM or MIA or CIJ will have higher costs to pay for the bigger labour and transport costs as well as keeping the Fender machine going. There are many factors in choosing a custom bass luthier. Geographical location is just one. Jon was recommended to me by someone I knew and trusted. The same person's Sei was not that impressive. Obviously if there's a great guy right there in your town then that's great. But other factors may be more important. People drive past perfectly good luthiers on route to others all the time.. How many Overwaters (or Roscoes or Baccus) are there in the South East? The bit about the Loud Cabs guy stealing all the money is simply irrelevant, unless you know something we don't about the luthiers you've listed
I've used the Ibanez Double bag a while now and I like it a lot, but be advised don't let it stand on its own and if you prop it up , make sure the wheels are not the point of support or it the wheels will spin off and cause the bag to fall. It has a problem standing up, otherwise I have no other issues with it so far.
s'wat I said

Bristol has loads of venues that put on music and loads of bands vying for the chance to play them. So .. to do best you have to be very entertaining and draw a crowd. Them's the base requirements. Generically, try the tricks in this ebook http://www.gig-getter.co.uk/ £15 well spent. Then you have to go for the starter gigs, do well and then move up. Have a long read through the Bristol Rocks website. http://www.bristolrock.co.uk/ There's all sorts of useful information about venues http://www.bristolrock.co.uk/Pubs/MusicVenues.htm and bands on there. Find a few you would fit with and volunteer to do support slots. You will have to draw 20+ people to do well but it will lead on and you get to play in front of someone else's crowd who you will instantly convert to being your fans by your absolutely fantastically entertaining show and marketing techniques ... won't you Also go for support gigs at the Fleece and Fiddlers. To get more you will need to bring loadsa people (it's the same old rules) Take 100 and they may give you a headline Monday. Fill that and you may get another .. after 5 or so you may get a Friday .. etc etc etc ... Headline teh fleece and you'll probably get a gig at The Prom - etc etc etc Go to the jam sessions listed on Bristol rocks and network like billy-ho. Offer to play a few numbers a band and see if anyone knows of venues where your music will fit .. http://www.bristolrock.co.uk/Pages/Open_mic.htm Try that and let us know how you get on. OG
Also, why when a few members express a favour towards a cheap bass its branded as "mass hysteria"?
It seems that enthusiasm for something gets knocked .. Same with Shukers .. I'll play my Shukers over the SX anytime however if I want to lend my bass to a jam session unknown person it will be the SX ..
Apparently out of stock, despite the great big Another online shop, another letdown!
Dolphin order them in ... This can take some time ...

The SX thing is this: They are dead cheap. They play and sound pretty much Ok out of the box, better with a few cheapish mods and are not available on every high street and eBay auction. It doesn't say "beginner" on the headstock (to me) in the same way that Squier does and it doesn't say "£90 quid bass" on the headstock in the same way that Jim Deacon does. The scarcity and general adoration of them by many US talkbass players mans that a correctly worded eBay auction will get a decent price second hand where a Squier generally won't. There is a lot of choice of different models. There is a certain excitement and exotic aspect about buying a bass from the US rather than your local music shop oik. They sound and play Ok and some look great too, David Dickinson neck tan on some models aside.... However, the SX basses that are generally available here in "bass packs" seem to be a different animal. I've played two unmodified Rondo SX jazzes, my heavily modded P and two "SX bass pack" basses in the local shop alongside a Squier VM 75 Fretted. The "bass pack" jazzes - with 21 frets - felt less "together" and the Squier VM Jazz was a much better bass. However the whole pack sells for about £150 ... IMHO the Rondo SX Jazz (20 frets) with a Gotoh bridge swap is easily as good as the Squier VM Jazz but with the added benefits of the points above.
we all played before but together however for me for example it will be first after almost 1,5 years break!
Coool ... so you know what to do beforehand to make it all work as well as possible on the night ... great, shoudl be a great gig
Great, no worries. It looked from this pics like there was just one shoulder strap. Happy to know that is not the case, though I don't intend on carrying it far. Hopefully mine should be here by Sunday, too. ped
Well there are two straps but hoiking it up and carrying it with two in is a tad uncomfortable as it bashes against your bum a bit. I tend to roll it and carry it with the side handle. The pockets are a good size. I'd not oput anything to pointy in them though, despite the size as I think the basses may get damaged if teh case fell over onto the pocket side ... It's well padded and has neck velcro straps. It feels very secure and protective. Plenty of padding between the basses as well as all round them. The things it's not good at are standing up on its own, despite the pull out balance thing in the base, and leaning it against things is tricky as the natural way to do that (ie lean it back against something) doesn't work because of the wheels .... Overall it's very good and great for the money.
I couldn't find a picture of the 'back' of the case (shoulder straps etc) - gotta decent pic of yours Mr. Git? ped
Sorry, not to hand .. If you can't wait 'til Sunday let me know and I'll snap a couple There's a handle to lift it and a couple of backpack straps that can be tucked away behind a zip-up thing.
I just ordered one of these from France, should be here by the bash if anyone wants to check it out. My Warwick double gigbag kills my shoulders because the straps click on, and also my back which as some of you know I have had major problems with recently. The wheels on this should prove handy. Here is the link to where I got it from: http://guitare.playback-europe.com/ibanez-..._bag-22061.html
I've got one of those and wiil be bringing it on Sunday.
Hi there Just registered and have spent a fascinating half hour reading everyone's comments about the Stagg EDB. I have been a bass player for twenty years and have mainly played a fretless 4 string Stagg bass guitar for the past four years. It's been a good, basic instrument that has served me well. While I was playing at a local jazz club just before Christmas, the visiting guest band's bassplayer did a couple of songs on a Stagg EDB 3/4. I fell in love with its looks and sound and had a play on it after the gig. I've recently taken delivery of my own Stagg EDB and am having a lot of fun getting used to it. (About £270 from Zings). I normally play my bass guitar sitting down so I have been amazed at the freedom standing up has given me. My real reason for this posting is to ask if anyone has any tips for transition players like myself. I still find it a little strange playing in an upright position and find myself looking at the fretboard to check my finger positions more than I do with my bass guitar. Any helpful suggestions?
Hi and welcome EffCleff good name So ... Can this Stagg 3/4 upright also be played in 4/4? Just wondered Sorry ... I'll get me coat, but not until I've said: best transition tip is a few pages back up - get a few lessons from someone who teaches upright bass playing. OG
The headstock on these looks pretty SX'y: Light Crust Doughboys Precision. Nice colour combo, brilliant name too
Yep I'd say that is the same. I'm sure they badge them. Shame it's in the US ... That one's sold but there's a white/tortie one with a BIN of £100 (plus 75 quid shipping and then the tax/duty mallarchy) A bit much for a kooky headstock decal and the "wrong" tuners ...
