2.
Friday had its moments
We have gigs like that now and then ..

    Stumped

Oh and I'm pretty sure this wasn't made clear. DO NOT use a guitar lead for a speaker cab. Get a speacial speaker cab lead. OBBM on this forum make and sells them.
  4.
sorry guys but I've made up my mind. I'm going with the GK 700RB-II amp, GK Neo 410 cab and GK Neo 212 cab. haven't tried it yet but i know i will like it lol. im gonna buy the 212 first, and then save up for the 410
Well done for being decisive .. No use faffing about for ages and you can only tell if it works for you by gigging it anyway ...
  5.
Cheers. No dB meter visible on the wall - just the sneaky hearing aids in the punters heads! Old Git; we were recommended to the venue by another venue where we've had some very good gigs.. So we were hopeful of better things Just one of those things I suppose..
Ha ha I understand .. just pawns in a local feud
  6.
'Transparent Red' I guess. Yours looks great, Linus. I keep changing my mind over colours.
Yeah the only one that looks cheapish in the pics is the "violinburst" one
  7. Thanks Linus That's helpful. I've worked out that the ends of the strings (from bridge to "tailpiece") need damping as they seem to join in occasionally .. Also the body under the bridge is hollow - bit of a "der..." moment there .. - which why it's a bit noisy and pics up any floor thumping ... My wife and kid still love it. I was playing along to my band's live desk recording and I can manage most of it on the stick. I must be pretty much in tune as well as Mrs OldGit has no respect for my delicate feelings when pointing out poor tuning in my playng - she has a real orchestral training background .. She's said nowt aboout it so far .. She likes my trick of stepping over the bass and going around the neck pole dancing whailst playing one number that's just G and D - opportunities for cool stage moves spring to mind All in all I think I'm getting on Ok with the we beastie ..
  8.
I had that problem last week Matt - very frustrating! Glad to hear it was a good gig though. Which is more than I can say for ours last night at the Labour Club in Brighton.. Grim place with a Karaoke bar upstairs, intervals in the evening for Bingo, the Raffle and Play Your Cards Right, lots of brylcream and blue rinses on view;I'm sure you know the kind of place. We were constantly being asked by the audience to turn down so, instead of going all the way up to No.11, the volume ended up on -11! Requests for 'New York, New York' all evening from an old dear who looked like the twin-sister of the nasty gran in Catherine Tate's show. She kept saying to our singer: "Come on, fu*king play it, play it! I asked yous nicely first time, just fu*king play it! blink: So in the end, we dug very deep into our seriously unrehearsed 1950s reptoire so the audience could have a little dance.... All in all, very scary! Music may be the food of love but gigging in places like that is like a sh*t sandwich!
You need to have a serious talk with whomever is in your band that says "yes please!" to gigs like that.

  10.
I hope this pic comes out, although as the Stagg now belongs to Linus I suppose I should ask his permission - nah. I can't see how you can play it without the stability provided by the outrigger on the near side, although I never saw the use for the one on the other side, which is why I never passed it on to Linus when I sold it. It's a long time since a relatively low value product stirred up such a high level of interest.
Cheers .. Does that have 4 legs? Low Value? no; Low price, yes. I'd not have got an upright if it were not so inexpensive .. That's valuable to me.
Really enjoyed Goldfrapp, but kept wondering how heavy Charlies' (Perspex) bass must be...
Is that Charlie Jones? 12.
I ended up buying Bassace's Stagg from him complete with home made stand. I would be lost with out his stand. The standing pin is set to my height so I can keep the Stagg out all the time and just slide it on and off the stand whenever I want to play. Its great. As for the two prong connectors on the Stagg, I never use them and so far it has never been a problem. In fact the smaller one on the left as you play I never got from Bassace. Not sure if he forgot to give it to me or he also never had one. The larger one on the right I never use. I find it gets in my way.
Any chance of a close up picture of the stand? I've taken the left side prong off as it was stopping me from getting up teh dusty end. The little humpy thing is enough to locate the octave position.
  13.
No, uprighters don't usually play with a stand. I was recommending one to OG so that he could put the Stagg on it when not playing. A DB is quite substantial and visible so you can lay it on its side when not playing. You won't see a Stagg so easily and while I had one I was paranoid that someone would step on it if I put it down. Incidentally, I have a Steinberger that is mounted permanently on a tripod - I play it in this mode. It's very good for tight playing areas like pubs and private houses where it's risky to put a DB down between sets. Having said that, I had a booking to do a house for two weeks time. I told the fixer that I'd bring the Stig. He said that the lady of the house specifically requested a double bass. Oh sh......t.
You have to please the punters mate ... Yup I'm looking at stand options (for parking, not playing) I have a few that kinda work but not quite but it's a good point about laying it down. It doesn't really lay down well anyway ... Playing wise do you find the Neds Ok on the stand or do you miss the hip connection you get with a doghouse? I tried the Stagg without the prongs and it's horrible as my left hand was struggling to hold it up and steady as well as hold the strings down .. Much easier with the side prong things leaning against your hip ...
  14.
It does not matter how many times you ask the questions you are gonna get the same answers from the same people. Everyone on here has their favourite squeeze and thats the answer you will get from a lot of people, no matter what question you ask. Thats how it is. I have pointed you at the wiki but you dont seem to want to learn what affects volume. The only indicator of how loud a cabinet will go is the measured sensitivity and frequency response graph but the latter are never published and the sensitivity can be imaginative. I cant find the figures for the Warwick as they dont appear to publish them but I have just looked at the GK website and the Neo 212 is 101dB and the 410RBH is 102dB. IdB is probably inaudible. You would usually gain 3dB by adding another cab.
The Ferret speaks the truth However 6 speakers looks louder

  17.
My BSX had a rather odd bit of shaping on the G string side - the only logical reason I could see for it was if you played it like a bass with it sat on your lap (it was a 34" scale).
I've seen an ad for the NS upright with the player wearing it like a Chapman Stick .. maybe that's it ...
  18. Well it's hard work (but I've not had my lesson yet) but it's the best attempt I've managed at an upright for many a year. The beastie itself is OK at home through my practice amp though the sound seems to go on for a while after I've damped the strings. .. That may be resonance through the wooden floors I guess. Is that a characteristic of amped stick doubles? Various muscles and fingers are aching, and threatening to blister, but .. the really good news is that Mrs OldGit says it's great, sexy, even! (GAS for a future NS/Shuker upright growing gently ) and, wonder of wonders, for the first time in history my 11 year old son has shown an interest in playing a musical instrument .. He not only said "Can I have a go Dad?" but has also had a go whilst I was out (under his mum's supervision). Apparently he was trying slides to get the mwaaah sound It's a tad tall for him at my spike height setting but this could be the break through we've all been looking for A house full of musical instruments of all sizes and he goes for this one .. I don't suppose SX make an acoustic double for 100 dollars do they?
  19.
My Aria's got the same thing - a button on the heel and another roughly behind the bridge so if you were that way inclined you could strap it on and play it like a bass guitar. Feck knows why you'd want to though.
Ha ha yeah I wonder if I can use it to secure it to a bass stand. Bassace's idea is the long term plan
  20.
Is he the bloke in the skirt?
No, That's you avatar
  21. Well as MaxCat knows mine had a few bits of mojo on it when it arrived. Nothing very serious but enough to suggest that it had maybe been out to a customer at least once. However they were fine about it and gave me a partial refund in exchange for some pictures of the damage. Nothing s bad as that sounds though. The main mark on mine was probably made by someone trying to put the side support in .... The technique is this. Take the long one that goes on the right of teh bass as you hold it and bend the "legs" apart a bit - they bend easily enough. then wiggle one prong into one hole, making it bigger as you go .. they are lined with nylon grippy collets so this is a case of squashing the nylon .. Then take it out and do the other hole with the same spike end. Be careful not to scratch the bass with the free end as you do this. Then do the other two holes one at a time the same way... then bend the supports back to how they should be and stick them in the holes ... They go in Ok after that treatment. and its so much easier to play with them in place. What's puzzling me is why there's a strap peg on the heel ... Maybe for hanging it up?
  22.
Jeff Bridges is fast becoming the coolest person in the world.
Do you think Hudson was his dad? He was a cool bloke too ;;
  23.
Thats what i do now. Its only a vocal PA but we mic the guitars and DI the bass just for a bit of throw. Our PA wouldn't be able to handle the bass at full volume but it does help get the bass out to people further back without me having to blast it out on stage. Its almost like Bi amping as i keep the low end backed off a bit in the PA.
Yup That's it, and a tiddly bit of bass drum too for the same reason. Actually since I got the MarkBass/Schroeder rig I've generally stopped doing it unless the hall has odd sound as it's very audible all over now just from the cab.
  24.
We had a jazz gig at Sutton Coldfield FC with the seven piece last night. It all went very well and they'll probably have us back although we are booking on a two -year cycle these days. I'm having a bit of trouble with my new gear, AI Clarus, 12" Wizzy, Fishman Pro EQ preamp from Underwood pickup. I'm getting too much lows and not strong enough highs. To make matters worse our front speakers won't handle the bass at my volumes so it's all having to come 'from the back'. I'm rolling bass off from the two preamps and just about getting something passable. Tomorrow Chipping Ongar, Monday Rotherham - it's a good life. PS (Mr Angry mode) why do punters always hang around the exit at the end when you want to get the gear out?
Have you tried putting just a little of your bass through the PA? I find just a smidgen is enough to throw it a long way into the auditorium so the people at the back can hear it but without blastig the front row and without doing any sonic damage to the rest of the stuff going through the PA -ie real "sound re-inforcement"
