1.
Well, Hawkwind + Syren are playing TOMORROW in Edinburgh. Come down, I'm sure there are still some tickets left, and I can buy you a beer or five Templates? You MADE templates just for my project??? I didn't think you'd do anything until I sent you all the bits! Seriously, if you have already done some preparatory work... I will have to let you do the work we discussed
If only I could make the g/f let me go - we're supposed to be going camping. Besides I've been laid up with buggered back all week - I don't think a funky gig will be conducive to my recovery. Cheers for the offer though Jose... I will eventually take you up on it. Don't sweat it man. If there's one thing I've learned from doing this it's that out of the 20 enquiries you get a week maybe only 1 of them comes to anything - I think it just goes with the territory. And someone is going to want a Pingray rout done at some point - here's the proof that you nearly had one.
2.
Touche! yeah, that P/MM project has been abandoned. Sorry, I should have probably told you when I decided I was sure to park it forever. I just realised that I didn't *need* that bass.....
Aye well your templates are made up all ready to rock should you change your mind... *cough* ... again.
I would put a humbucking J there. Just not sure what. I like the Dimarzio Model J, but looks wise is a no-go, and not sure it would be well matched to the existing P. I have to investigate.
Wise words man.
I was never a big fan of P/J (mostly because I was not a fan of P basses!), but I find a P-bass does a passable impersonation of a neck Jazz .... and adding a bridge Jazz seems the reasonable thing to do
Well at least you know at the end of the day it's always going to be a compromise.
A drummer friend of mine just joined a band (supporting Hawkwind this weekend!) and she took me along to a rehearsal a couple of weeks ago. The bassist used a Fender P/J. We chatted a lot afterwards, of course. I liked that bass. Not fretless though... although the original bassist played a fretless, and she was really interesting (the name is Syren, if you want to check them out, there's a video or two on Youtube, although the best stuff is only on the CDs).
Sounds cool. Big fan of the Hawk lords like.
3.
Not sure
Most (not all) of those type are stereo sockets and are used to switch on an active circuit when a mono jack is inserted.
4. Why are you using a stereo cable?
5. Don't forget too (although I think I may be opening another can of worms for you here) that you can adjust the pups responsiveness (and equilibrium) by raising and lowering the hex heads. Just so you don't get too hung up on it though, mine are pretty much flush with a wee step up for the A and D poles.
6.
Could I ask what the pickup clearance you have? Mine's nearly 1cm!
On my vintage L-1000 (which has a slightly hotter pup) the clearance from the top of the pup to the bottom of the E string is 4mm. On my main squeeze which uses the same neck pup as yours it is a gnat's under that. edit : both measurements are from the bridge side of the neck pup.
7. I use MFD pups all the time and have never witnessed this myself.
8. Don't do it Jose. She's a classic beauty. I don't think you will gain all that much from a bridge pup anyway. Besides Ps and Js are just not meant to be together - if you want to do it for tonal reasons put in an equally matched humbucker not a single coil... and we know you ain't gonna do that. Have you played about with a PJ recently?
9. Putting that scratchplate on it is like putting a sequin on a sewer rat's arsehole.
10. As the kind of guy who does this work for other people I might be a wee bit biased in suggesting that if you are not sure about it then it probably is best to give it to someone else to do.... this is your bass we are talking about after all. If you think you'd like a go anyway, why not practice on something else first - maybe a busted pedal or something. There are a few tut vids on yt which show the basics.
11. Quick, read this.
12. If you like the feel of Fenders you will love Sandberg as they are similar but with much better 'tronics. The ones I've played haven't quite lived up to the hype though... in fact one I played felt like it could have been a Squier or something equally as anaemic. Stingray's are fantastic, as are G&Ls (including Tributes) I have both (my G&L is vintage) but all I play now are homebuilt basses. My current main squeeze is my own take on a G&L.
13. Stick it in passive mode if the boost is too much.
14. Sh*t the bed - that's proper bo. And no trite comparisons to Stingrays either.
15. Love the PA speaker. Nobody went home with ringing ears in them days.
16. We have this fantastic yet extremely tiny rock venue up here (which seems to be on the map as we regularly get bands from allover the EU coming to play) and it had the same problem with hot stage lighting. There was this great orange one right in your face if you are a tall bass player - like fecking volcanic tanning lamp it was... until the owner put in LED lights.... ahhh much better. Cannae here it man. Must be because the guitar amp is pointed at the camera.
17. First song of the night and you're already sweating buckets. Roll on winter eh.
18. It seems to be made of nice bits and bobs. If it's put together well the I'd say it a real bargain. Not sure what he means by G&L control lay out as the L-1500 was a single humbucker... and not many people liked the sound of it's electrics. Maybe he's effectively split the 'bucker in a jazz pup layout (these look like DiMarzios) and used the same 'tronics - if that's the case he may well have improved upon the nasty inherent nasal quality of the L-1500.
19.
They used to be back in the day! Proper scene girls. It was worth askin, just in case
Will do. What scene like? I'm mostly "down with the rock crowd". Can't believe no one's pounced on these yet. Maybe at a glance the "single coil" reference in the title (although correct) is making folk immediately think of single coil P pups.
20. "Ew keep it to yourself" bump Get some vit C into ya.
21. Don't make any changes that aren't reversible (drilling, routing etc). These are relatively rare and will be worth a few bob some day soon.
22.
markbass do a velcro one that sticks to your cab (if it's carpet covered of course) an dI've seen one that clips onto a table before too...
I have a Markbass one which velcros around your cab handle then around your bass/guitar neck (it doesn't vecro to you cab) - if that's what you mean... I always forget to take it with me though.
23. It will undoubtedly go but it will need a fair bit of work. To start with the neck heel and pocket will be of different dimensions, and therefore you will have to make them fit - perhaps by routing out the Ibby pocket to Fender size (also doesn't the Ibby use a screws only neck-bolt design?). Secondly your Ibby uses a 22 fret neck, I doubt your Fender spec neck is a 22 fret one... therefore a bit more carpentry and knowhow will be needed to set the neck in exactly the right place. If you've done this sort of thing before then it will be quite easy, if you are new to it then get someone else to do it for you. It might sound easy enough but one little slip up with say the alignment of the neck pocket and you are screwed.
24. I stick mine back in it's bag in a safe stop out of the way... maybe behind a stack of amps or in an anti-room.
25.
...Failing that, I use Procells. Bulk buy.
+1
