That's Danny Thompson playing bass unless I'm very much mistaken. Very nice.
Ah ok I didn't know who it was. He's done some stuff with Kate Bush that I know of.

Isn't it just a lefty OLP that someone has bunged a '51 pup in and had a bit of fun with some p/g material?

I'm seeing lots of noob activity in the classifieds with no real contribution elsewhere. I'm just wondering if we should visit the "minimum post count before being able to post in the classified section" debate again? Perhaps "the noob" could ask for permission to post in the classifieds once their post number had exceeded (for example) 50 and have their last 50 posts randomly reviewed by a mod - this would avoid 50 posts of "+1" and "this" to get their count up.
... even a few comments about do I want a tin of Pledge to go with it ?...
Haha fantastic

Following the grand failure of the last vid I posted in here General Discussion (which apparently wasn't quite technical enough and some of the notes were too out of time for Basschaters to say anything nice about it) I do this with a certain amount of trepidation. But hey I like the bass line and thought I share. It's a very simple example which has an easygoing dynamic feel to it (or is that just another way of saying it's not very technical and the timing isn't as accurate as a computer would do it? ) and imho takes subtle possession of the overall vibe of the music... like a good bass line should.

Strings - which ones have the most 'thump'?

Tone knob? -
Was watching Guitar Heroes on Beeb 3 (or four) last night and I suddenly realised that 90% of all the guitars and basses on there were all worn, bashed up and chipped or had pup mods etc held in place with gaffa tape etc., I even saw a couple of guitars that were clearly hand painted... like... with a brush. They all did the job and sounded great... well... except Phil Lynott who sounded like he was playing a cardboard box... with a touch of chorus. If those guys could see us now eh, what a bunch of pussies we'd look. I wonder if, as we now live in a more materialistic world compared to then, there's not more of an obsession about the gear than the music itself? Perhaps it's less to do with age but more to do with the age we live in.
Isn't that an early Squier-series model??
Either that or it's a very good copy.
-
No, Squier is an FMIC brand. Squiers do have the word Fender on the headstock but Fender no longer exists as a company, only as a brand. So as I said earlier, it would be more accurate for the headstocks to say 'Squier by FMIC'. Only most people wouldn't have a clue who or what FMIC is, whereas 'Fender' is probably the higest profile brand of instruments in the world. So they create an association in people's minds by putting the words 'by Fender' rather than 'by FMIC' on the headstock.
+ to the 1
-
I wonder if it helps to look at it this way. They have a large Squier logo on the headstock because that's what they are (otherwise why else would it be there) ... but they also have a smaller Fender logo added in recognition of the parent company.... which as we all know doesn't exactly hurt from a marketing point of view.
...When it does become an issue is if you sell it maliciously, or, and probably more pertinently where it goes after you sell it honestly. ...
Spot on. And as far as I am aware no one on here is being accused of any such thing.
-
Yeah, I got all that, the bit you are missing, is that (And I don't know your experience of such things, so from your comments, I have to make an assumption) anyone who was genuinly in the market for a 1958 Fender Precision, would not be fooled, even for a second by my bass. My ad says that i went to great lengths to source period correct parts, where possible. But it cannot be confused with the real thing, unless you have seen, handled, and inspected many vintage basses, you may not be able to understand what i mean, because from a picture it looks great, but it cannot be confused with a real one...not by anyone buying it. Yes, its far better than a CS Relic, or Roadworn, but they can be told apart from an original from 100yards by someone buying. As for your comment "who better to buy a fake from with the intention of ripping someone off than from the expert himself", that is truly offensive, especially as I'm clearly stating what it is, and selling the bass for £700??? I'm not ripping anyone off. To the novice, it could confuse, but a novice isn't gonna be spending £10k on something he knows nothing about, so it's never gonna happen, no-one is ever going to be mis-sold my bass. Bravewood's are better, and that's why the good ones are £2k+, because they are that good, and can be mis-sold. We'll have to agree to disagree, as I cannot make my point any clearer, sorry.
There's not much to disagree on mate...especially what I or the everyday bassist knows about vintage Fenders compared to yourself ... except perhaps that you or I or anyone could easily pull up a 100 ebay listings where a fake bass was sold on the strength of some lovely pictures for well under what the original would have gone for. Your argument relies on your bass being sold on again in person (and for that market value)... not everyone has this privilege, perhaps geography might get in the way or whatever. Oh and please re-read the part about "who better to buy a fake from..." and learn to recognise a compliment... even if it's from someone you don't particularly like. I said the guy buying to sell it on was the fraudster not you.
Yes, but i replied making it very simple, and that the comparism wasnt there, anyway, this is boring. If you were genuinly buying a £10k bass, you wouldnt be conned, thats what i said. Nothing more.
My apologies for boring you so.
feel free to explain yourself then. You said pot kettle black to my quote, which was amusing, as it was anything but, I replied. Wheres the offence??? God, basschat is becoming very angry and aggressive, I've been reading all sorts of threads over the last few days, lots of anger out there, and people getting offended by nowt. like being back at school.
Ok I'll explain but if you want to infer that I am acting like a school kid or accuse me of not being able to grasp a simple concept that I have been discussing all day then I'll have to say ta-ta. You said that Bravewood were actually ethically worse than your copy because they could be passed off as originals. You have gone to amazing lengths to produce a lovely example which you are openly advertising as a copy and not priced as an original. Once it sells (maybe to someone we've not seen around here much before) what guarantee do you have that they will not try to sell it on as an original. Going by what you said in your ad, most people would find it hard to tell... especially when there are fine details like the pencil dating. Most fakes brought up on these pages are easily debunked by guys such as yourself... who better to buy a fake from with the intention of ripping someone off than from the expert himself. "Ethically" they are the same. Bravewood sells to their customer as a Bravewood... how the buyer subsequently sells it on is anyone's guess. Perhaps my choice of the phrase "pot-kettle-black" was a little over simplistic for the internet in this instance (given that you have a vested interest and a strong desire to defend) but I was trying to keep my comment as light-hearted as all my others in this thread and simply draw a comparison to the two identical possible outcomes.
Maybe, but they are also not going to spending £10k then are they, otherwise they would know exactly what they were buying. Jeeez. are you taking the p or for real??
You are implying that have have a problem with your advert. It is none of my bee's wax. But it is pertinent to this debate.
Anyway, Bravewood are a company, making money out of making replica guitars (Very well I might add), mine is a one-off replica that i made for myself, and is advertised as such. Point.....missed......yes.
Your assumption of my understanding of the situation is inaccurate and offencive.
-
Not at all, you've missed my point entirely. I even referenced my bass in my post. I said, that Bravewoods could be passed off as the real thing, because they are that good. Mine is not, it has repro catalogs (All reprinted copies of these, contain the printed type "Vintage reissue catalog by Vintage Press' typed inside, so you'd have to be blind not to see this, and extremely dumb to try and sell it as original, as it would be returned within 5 seconds. Mine is advertised as a replica, quite clearly, and wouldn't fool anyone spending £10k. Bravewoods could, because they are that good. Odd thing to say??
I didn't miss any point mate. I can read. An expert such as yourself will spot it in seconds but I think it's fair to say that a decent percentage of Basschaters will not be able to tell that yours is not genuine even if they held it in their own hands.
Oh, and another thing, Bravewood for example, ...... These are actually ethically worse though, because many that I've seen could be passed off as originals, and probably have been?!!
Pot... kettle... black?
...
I'm on Sabbatical from posting (bad feedback issue) but I'm moved to say, "you guys have the debate, I'm in love with something blue white and maple and I don't care who's illegitimate offspring it is"
You're not the only one to have fallen for Betty's charms.
...Compare my effort to allow full disclosure of the Allparts brand (literally burned in) to examples where serial numbers are used, artificial distress wear imposed and (with apologies to Rick's Fine '58) pencilled dates are added.
yip I had a bass Labeled as a Fender. Cost me £5 a week for I can't remember for how long. I never implied it was to anyone if anything I down playedthe sticker to many peoplewho were convinced it was real. I always thought the Hohner neck plate and Made in Korea was a give away personally. ...
Seeing as we are declaring our vested interests. I once took this bass... ... and turned it into this bass (same neck and body) and yes that's a Fender decal.... I'm ready for my punishment.
