I'm sure it's a right good P-bass though, and the blonde finish looks sweet!
I agree... to an extent. I do love the overall look... but it is what it is. If you want a tele headstock, that option is available on other basses go buy one of them. But it seems kind of cheap that have just raided the parts bins for a stock '51 p/g to shove on it. It wouldn't have been too hard to produce a more specific for the split P.... but then again Fender aren't really know for new innovations are they. Perhaps something simpler like the one on my Shuker.... Oh and for the headstock fascists
 2.
Retro thread. Avon EB0 copy. £35 mail order from Rose Morris. About £34 over priced. Hideous unplayable dead sounding firewood. Kids today don't know how lucky they are. We couldn't afford shoes. We used to boot polish our feet and tie laces on to them, etc..... damn speeling
Boot polish! We had to dip out feet in the hearth... while it was still lit......
 3. What I really don't get is guys with expensive basses who won't play them down the Dog and Duck because they might get damaged or stolen. Why can't they just take responsibility for their basses? Don't leave them unattended - if you can't have it with you, speak to the staff and get it locked up in a back room or something. Don't leave it on the stage because it looks pretty while you go mingle with the audience. And if you do stick it on a stand, make sure it's not in anyone's way where it can get bumped over - I've seen folk set their guitars up right on "their" spot, where they will be standing . Load ins and outs can be a source for concern - keep a WAG or trusted fan with the van at all times and be careful. Ok you might smack the head off a cymbal during the gig but that's just as likely to happen at the biggest of venues too. I've gigged the length and breadth of the country and I've never had a stage invasion get out of hand or bottles thrown (I guess we were just too good ) sure it happens but it is very much the exception to the rule. Sometimes it just comes across as a form of veiled bragging - "My bass is just soooo good that I can't even gig with it".
 4.
I use WD40.
I hope you are joking. I'm a big fan of Ernie Ball Wonder Wipes.
 5.
The first bass I played was a very old Fender P-Bass. Being the age that I was, I was not aware that it was worth anything, and neither was my sister because she had it refinished by a friend in a really nasty silver colour. Based on memory I would have guessed it to be an early to mid 70's P. The first real bass I owned was a P-Bass copy. I loved it
I have a similar story. A neighbour heard that I played guitar (no bass back then) and asked if I wanted a couple of old bangers they had lying around for the princely sum of £12 (that was a good night out, with change for your taxi back in 1983 ) turned out to be a Hayman Modular (and a bag of bits) and a sunburst Fender P. They were a bit scabby compared to my lovely Cimar Tele Custom so I fixed up the Hayman and let them go for not much more than I picked them up for... in fact I think I may have just given the Fender away - god knows what vintage it was but I remember there was some foam muting under the bridge cover that was old enough to have had deteriorated into dusty stuff though. Ooh if only I knew back then what I know now. edit : Oh and then my first proper bass as a bass player was a Gibby Ripper.... it got nicked.
 6. Oh dear Matt. So it's finally come to this. Selling off Jayne's gear to pay for more basses for you. I've just got to say to anyone considering this, Matt's a sound guy to deal with. His word is his bond.
 7.
YouTube video reaches 25 views celebration bump... any takers though??
At least 5 of those are mine. Nice playing btw. Sorely tempted (now I've gotten over the bridge pup) but I just don't have the floating capital at the moment. Speaking of which, imho you should wait until everyone's wages are in before heading over to evilbay.
 8. Ordinary bass = mass produced Boutique bass = hand crafted Where's the confusion?
 9.
How much of a problem is it to have two tone pots on the same line? Doesn't it just give a wider range of tone roll-off? Or is there some loop problem?
The one would choke the other. Say you have one set to fully roll off the treble, what can the other one do? Nowt. Not to mention the relative ineffectiveness of having two caps bleeding your signal to earth at the same time - ok you just half their value. In an active EQ circuit there is no problem, as you preselect isolated frequency ranges and boost or cut that specific frequency range without affecting other frequencies - you could probably even have two pots selecting the same frequency ranges and produce a strange (probably unusable) compressed tone by cutting one and boosting the other. In passive circuit you can only remove top end not add anything (there is one exception - a bit of crazy wizardry that effectively produces a passive bass boost... and I use it in my circuits. )
 10.
OK, but I wasn`t intending fitting a series switch, that was the OP. If there was no complications from a switch would the two tone thing work? EG: Master Vol/Blend/Tone neck/ Tone Bridge. Are there any basses set up like this? Apologies to OP for the hi-jack, am hoping this is all relevant to him too. MM
Yep that's totally doable.
 11.
Why is Leo's empire "evil"??? ...
Besides the ratio of Leo era basses to contemporary mass produced "copies" (ok they bought the patent and trade mark) on that or any show will be minimal. Leo wasn't part of any evil world domination plan.... quite the opposite.
 12.
As a proper pedant, I shall point out that "it's age" should be "its age". Possessive its has no apostrophe.
Kudos to you sir.
 13.
Ah but... with a blend you won`t need two vols.. so you could have two tones. No?
In theory... but not really because in order for them to work independently you will have to have your tone pots before your s/p switch. What then happens when you switch them to series? Uh-oh two tone pots on the same line. You could set a switch to by pass one of the pots but then your simple DPDT switch just became a whole lot more complicated.
 14. There was a guy on the other week playing a MM SUB5.
 15. The more expencive the gear the better you are. Stands to reason. Besides, everyone knows, you don't get much for a Squier in Bass Trumps.
 16.
I`m going to give it a try, although the series switch wasn`t in my plans. I quite like the look of that diagram as it has tone pots for both pickups, that makes loads of sense to me, being able to roll the front pickup tone off but keep the bridge open or vice versa. That sort of makes the blend a giant tone control. Does mean sticking the input socket on the arse though which I`dont mind on the bitsa, but not the MIM.
Those are volume pots. The one with the cap is your tone. What you stick in the arse is none of my business.
 17.
Dear stroosioo, Hi, On this item you state it is in "mint" condition, however the pictures you've provided clearly show considerable damage, however you do state later in the description that it shows signs of time. I question weather the item in the pictures is the same one you describe.? Thanks - destined_hero Dear destined_hero, Hi, OK, it's in 'mint' condition for it's age, but as it's over 30 years old and never been repaired or resprayed you can see the signs of use, worn-out lacquer, some small dents, the usual thing that happens to most guitars being used daily. By 'mint' I mean no cracks to the body or neck, no repairs done to the instrument, no alterations, and so on... feel free to ask if you need any extra info.
Aw he's redefining "mint" for us. Sounds like a helpful enough chap and probably a treat to deal with and no mistake..... none of your wishy-washy "the customer is always right" from this bastion of the English language. Matt, as resident pedant would you care to instruct our "I know I'm right but I'll ask anyway" questioner (destined_hero) in the differences between "weather" and "whether"?
 18.
Niether do it for me colour-wise, but you might want to consider the effect from a distance. If you are getting this worked up about colour schemes..and I am not saying there is anything against that....consider what you will backdrop it with... The green/blue will struggle against more colours IMO.
Who died and made you Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen?
 19.
It is possible to do, obviously the blend pot does not function when in series. There are a couple of ways to do it, one makes the bass cut out completely when the blend pot is turned all the way to one end. The better way to do it just overrides the blend pot completely but its slightly more complicated. Heres a diagram. For a blend pot just substitute the pickup switch for a pot - same wiring.
Mine uses a variation on the above but it was complicated by the fact that my Schack pre-amp requires 2 inputs or silliness ensues. I got around it eventually though by sending 2 series signals to it. Interestingly now, in series mode, it boosts the centre/both selection (while the outer selections remain the equal to eachother) of my 3 way pup selector - an unexpected benefit. This one is different but might be simpler to follow - just send the two red outs to either stage of the blend... but again as I mentioned earlier, I think there will be blending issues when you knock them into series as one end of the blend will be dead.
 20.
Hahaha, just you take advantage of the wiggle room in that statement. I was talking specifically about the Gibson version of this particular bass, but I didn't make that clear, oops. So, yeah, chuckle away, as it does appear on the face of it to be a delicious irony
Yeah yeah whatever. Anyway I was just remembering how much love this bass got at Moffat and how highly you regarded this bass back then.
 21.
Sorry, what do you mean?
It's so when you split the signal in the Y position you don't get line loss (caused by, in the most basic of terms, half the signal going one way and half the other) and also it provides a separate earth so you can send the signal into two different amps.
 22. Ah bad show. Drop them a reminder.
 23.
....Moving along, neck-dive. Yes, it's slightly neck heavy (yawn)...the added ounces from the new bridge perhaps subliminally go some way to resolving the issue, but to be honest I only played the bass on the strap once before I swapped over the bridge, so don't feel qualified to argue one way or another. To be honest, I'm a little tired of the whole neck-dive argument; sure if you're going to assume a JC pose every time you play it, then yes, the bass will rotate head first towards the ground, but very slowly. Jeesh. Get over it, it's not life threatening. Buy yourself a wide strap......
Nice one.
