Ou7shined replied to LeftyBiskit's topic in Repairs and Technical
Contact Ashdown. If you stay cool, they'll most likely send it ya free. -
It looks lovely! Is it a real Rick?
Very real.
What??? I seriously can't see how you could not acknowledge the 30th anniversary model as a major leap forward in design - it has "white pearl position markers and pearl frost pickup covers" for gawds sake!!!
Doh how could I have forgot?
Joking aside, what you say is too true, but it just goes to show how all of Leo's main designs from Fender, Musicman and G&L were fundamentally right from the beginning. If it ain't broke ...
I like to think of G&L as more like Leo saying "Well if CBS/Fender aren't going to fix it... I will".
Just for fun... another version with a Stingray plate. I still prefer the Precision... and it would look too much like another bass made by a BCer, and it'd be a bit... weird.
Who would that be then? Anyway I don't hold exclusivity over the idea, someone has made another Pingray since the first one (it's in the build diary section somewhere). It's a winning combo mate, I say go for it.
I was thinking something along these lines (ignore the fact it's a wrong plate, it's the closest thing I had at hand, it's just for visualisation purposes) .....
Nice. It's reminiscent of something I've had on the back burner for a while (can't show the headstock as there is something very unusual and cool going on )...

... and all this stuff about pre-BBE is, for the most part, misleading guff aimed at creating a pre-CBS style panache by sellers of nearly but not quite examples. In many cases there is no difference between pre-BBEs and post-BBEs - especially as George Fullerton was still on the payroll keeping an eye on QC. I personally view the evolution from simple headstock to the "eye-gouger" one (circa '82) as a marker of the only major landmark in G&L bass evolution.

MusicMan SUB basses are good but...
Ou7shined replied to mcnach's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
Last two I seen on the 'Bay went for £400ish, including a particularly nice white one. Incidentally mine (Red SUB thread is literally just up for sale as I've managed to snag a decent '88 2EQ 'Ray from the 'Bay for £675 --->Black 88 'Bay 'Ray. SUB is up for £340 picked up in gig bag, or £370 in hard case plus shipping to BC ers. Oh, and I'm based in Glasgow (nae pressure McNach.... )
Nice score on that '88. -
Ok that eliminates a simple eq disparity. Have you got a different D’addario (or very similar) E string to make a comparison with? If you are using a brand new set, just boil up a used one to bring it up for this test.

Do you notice an identical drop in volume through everything you play it through (PC, headphones amp, practice rig, main rig etc.)?

Is a Squier Standard body any good..?
Ou7shined replied to matt-bass-sparkes's topic in Repairs and Technical
Plywood guitars can sound mighty tasty indeed. They just don't look as good... The problem is plywood is used mostly in the cheapest of the cheap... so it's low quality all around. But you can build a pretty good sounding guitar with a plywood body. I did. What I don't like (apart from looks, unless it's some fancy "laminate") is that the plywood is not as solid when routing etc... I'm not saying "let's go plywood!", just that the actual material of the body has a (small) effect in the sound, and that "bad wood" does not necessarily mean "bad tone" in the end.
+1 In fact I'll go as far as to say that sometimes ply beats solid wood for density (and therefor musicality andsustainn) because of the glue, chemicals and the compression processes it goes through. I think it'll be a while before the bass community at large is willing to buy this fact though - for the moment all ply will continue to be seen as sub-standard.... it ain't though. -

Received a small package of various freebie parts from Nige's clear-out. He is the very essence of BC generosity. A donation will be forthcoming. Cheers mate. Rich.
...Until someone undeniably cool is strongly associated with a Status bass they'll always be expensive mid-life-crisis basses.
Ulp... I wonder if that's why I lusted after one last year. I'm mostly over them now though. My new Thai girlfriend mentioned they looked silly when we were out looking at E-types the other day.
This job is awesome. I want to paint a Jazz alder Warmoth in Fiesta red... Any tips? at all? should i bother with the gloss on top to make it vintage-ier? Thanks Fatos
Cheers. I would. It adds depth to your finish and it also allows you to cut it back to a flatter overall finish. I keep meaning to post this pic, so here it is almost 2 years late.
Wondering what basses are totally out of fashion...
What a great question. I'm wracking my brain cell. Maybe pointy headed Charvels and the like I'm only saying that because you hardly ever see them played live. Bootsy's Space Bass?
Yes, you came in guns blazing and shot me down, in exactly same way you're accusing me of having done to the seller. Does this make sense? Anyway, I'm bowing out from this, it appears that things will start to go around in circles and it's better to avoid any unpleasantries.
FYI when I came in and commented on "item D", I didn't even know that it had been a basschatter that had said that to her. So don't feel indignant over that.
Really, doesn't feel that way to be honest, but hey ho!
Mate no one here is saying you weren't right to offer a noob some assistance. It's just you went in guns a blazin' and now regardless of how she took it, there maybe repercussions for her.
I'm not trying to do damage limitation. The points were direct and honest - albeit not written entirely with grace, and for this I've already apologised. Which parts were not true BTW? The fact that it's not a Fender, or that it may only be good for spares or indeed be useless? True, I haven't seen the bass, it could be perfectly playable, but a little bit of common sense goes a long way, and if I didn't say it, someone else may have.
Everyone and their dog on here knows it's not a Fender, that's just a silly to say. In the light of what Jon has said, would you still advise her to part it out or stick it in the bin?
True, she didn't ask for an opinion. I'll know better next time than to incur the wrath and OPINION of another BC-er by daring to have an OPINION of my own >_>
Dude if I have been erroneous in any way with anything I've said please correct me.
One thing that does strike me is this (this goes out to the general public and not aimed at you directly BTW): (nearly) everyone on here is prepared to have a laugh at the expense of the seller because the item has been listed inaccurately. Which I guess is fair enough as it's away from the gaze of the seller. But is it? The seller could well be a member on here or at least have access to it. So which is worse, being direct and honest and trying to be helpful, okay I didn't word it exactly right, but the intention was well? Or, having a snigger at someone behind their back and then claiming the higher the moral ground when someone does something you or others don't agree with? This is what I don't understand about forums sometimes. But hey, we're all grown ups... right?
There is no argument on the fact that you were full of good intentions. But elements of what you said to her, no matter how much damage limitation you want to put on it were not true and based solely on one man's iffy opinion. The negative comment you put forward has sent ripples out into the world which may ultimately cost the seller money. I sure she's really happy that "we" helped now. This section of the forum is for the discussion of ebay auctions. A fair amount of the content is about the the stupidity of sellers listings and how comical they seem to us enthusiasts. The sellers original listing (before Basschat got involved) was just another laughable listing. So what if she had been a member and had seen the comments on here about her listing? She would have been free to correct the silly mistakes herself... maybe even ask for some advice, instead of having it thrust upon her.
Thought it would be a good idea if someone who had a clue contacted her and told her exactly what it is, rather than bickering about what it ain't. So I did. J.
Nice one Jon. Let's hope she can erase all that other stuff (incl. the bit about it being a real Fender) and just have your contribution up.
-
Hi Ou7shined: all this has been resolved, and Linda the seller of the item is taking it all on board and understood exactly the sentiments being expressed and never once assumed that those writing to her were being sarcastic or judgmental. If anything, I think she's grateful for some help. Opinion is just that, opinion - and we all pull on our experiences as human beings to formulate it. Just as some people saw my comments as rude, others saw it as direct and to the point. It's now all water under the bridge, so let's just get back to topic
Fair enough pal, let's just forget that you told her to stick it in the bin and get back on topic. Ok back on topic...... I see a comment in her current listing that someone advised her to stick it in the bin. I wonder if this will have an effect on her final price?
Situation not helped by whichever clueless clown offered her the information she posted a few minutes ago ... it IS a real Fender because it has serial numbers under "Precision Bass" on the headstock.
OMG, this poor woman.
.... In fairness, comment D is very direct and true...
It's only your opinion mate. You have not even held it in your hands and inspected it. On what basis can you pass judgement and tell her it's only worth going in the bin like that? There aren't many people on here that would argue against Jon's (bassassin) credentials and keen eye in this respect. The king of Japcrap tells us it is a "Rather nice early (71-ish) Matsumoku J copy. I'm watching. ". So who are we to believe?
I just don't understand this forum sometimes

... All this highlights is the difficulty in these situations when something with well intended notions can be interpreted differently by different people....
How are we supposed to interpret "only worthwhile as spare for parts or binning!" then?
-
Comment D emailed to her is both presumptuous and overly harsh. Fair play to her for adding that gem of advice to the revised description - mind you, what can you do when you don't know much about the subject and an "expert" contacts you.

How the shitting hell did that happen.
