1. Ew indeed. Travel bass? Looks more like the Masked Relic Sander just got carried away.
 2.
£10 and 6 days to go! I paid £13 for new one with PnP! http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Fender-jazz-bass-F-b...=item1c1b407970 .....if this thing makes over £20 I'm gonna buy a shed load and bury them out in the garden so they can aquire that certain 'sonic patina'......money in the bank sir
Your turnaround could be faster than that. It looks like it's simply been left in coke. I tried cleaning some old tuners in coke over night once and this is exactly how they turned out - eaten through to the nickel. It's a very poor relic job. I mean how is the depressed section in the F supposed to have been rubbed away over time. Mugs.
 3.
Decided to play it with my Grunge covers band.
Fantastic. Nice sing along chorus eh. The quiet bit near the end's a peach, won't be easy doing it live but you have to bring it down for the finale. Are going for the full intro or just straight in?
 4.
...but it's no different from buying something from Gumtree, an card in a shop window, an ad in your local paper, or any classified ad anywhere....?
That's correct, the principal is the same.
 5.
Um, why? I've bought and sold quite a few things cash on collection (as an option, not the only option). Saves giving ebay yet another slice of money through Paypal fees and saves packing things up (I have recently sold, packed, and posted a bass and two pairs of PA speakers, it's a PITA).
Because these days ebay attracts a hell of a lot of idiots and if there are any problems you have no recourse or protection if you avoid paypal.
 6.
Ty Cobb - Soundgarden Awesome track.
By the awesomest band in the world. You hero.
 7.
Try being Northern Ireland where either they won't ship or they try an extortionate amount of P&P and of course for 99% of the pick up only is useless. Although I thought you weren't allowed Cash on Collection only anymore. I thought you had to offer and accept Paypal or the ad gets pulled?
I feel your pain brother. Your not. But unless someone reports it, it will probably get through.
 8.
...the wood relaxes under years of string tension and playing...
What does this actually mean? Like yoga classes?
Ou7shined. You are 100% disgusting.
Then my work here is done. Mark my words though, you'll get it yourself one day (presuming you are a boy).
 9.
Linky! Cheers. You have to be a total tardo to pay cash for anything off the bay. But if you imagine that the majority of similar ads (collect only cabs*) are located in Englandshire, he may get a few bites. OP put yourself in our (Scots) shoes - we are similarly frustrated at these* ads all the time.
 10. Did you weigh the body before and after? That bridge doesn't look particularly light. A bbot with tusq saddles would probably be more in keeping with the theme.
 11. Sheesh. The gall of some folk eh.
 12.
By "Wee" I'm hoping you mean "Small". If not there are special pads you can buy in any branch of Boots.
I'm not quite there yet. Although I do have to run the pipes through after a sex wee.
Nah the f***ing stupid people are the people that feel the need to ridicule others based on opinions and tastes.
Ooooh I think someone still has some ripped jeans.
Surely it could be that old instruments were built in a different time with a different work ethic?....
If that's the case why are '70s Fenders becoming "collectabe" now too?
Well the stradivari are considered THE best, down to the mans skills and the woods he used.....
Aye, they must be pretty good as the finish didn't magically fall off after 30 years... although I've never seen any with fag burns on the headstock either.
 13.

Just don't ask to see round the back.
 14.
Oh. That'll be Ringo getting bored again...
"Thomas The Tank Engine left the stat.... oh fook it" Bzzzzzzzzzzt.
 15.
People buy brand new jeans with holes & rips in them. They're f***ing stupid as well.
Haha snap.
 16.
The thing I find wierd about this whole 'roadworn' image thing is that I can't think of another consumer retail chain where people buy knackered looking merchandise...
Do people still buy ripped jeans? I know mine usually have wee marks where you've apparently had your hands in your pockets for ages but it's not as extreme as the old Sammy Fox look.
 17.
I sense a slight controversy, almost as you seek to challenge me. I won't get into it for the sake of "I know better, you know better" so what I'll do I'll give you some links that can give you a lot of different prospectives as to why trees which were born centuries ago, had different consistency where it has been noted by scientists using CT scans that 200 years ago or older trees grew slower and their growth rings were tighter & smaller hence producing better harmonic resonance. http://www.good-music-guide.com/community/...hp?topic=8337.0 http://www.sakura.cc.tsukuba.ac.jp/~obatay...hi_WCSK2011.pdf
No challenge mate. I am genuinely, 100% interested in hearing your first hand experience of the fact you offered into the debate... I'm not however interested in hearsay.
 18.
Maybe it applies to Morgans though. I dunno is there a Morgan forum where the debate a Fake worn look
Sounds like another good experiment in the making. Buy a Morgan, park it in the center of a busy supermarket carpark for a couple of weeks then see if it's market value has increased or decreased after that.
 19.
I wonder if the same would work if Jeremy Clarkson to start driving around in a knackered old Vauxhall Chevette... The market for spray on rust, custom dented doors and patchwork body panels could be massive...
That's right folks get down to your local scrappy before it's too late. I love how the car analogy knocks the roadworn argument on it's ass every time.
 20.
Supposidly, as all the wood in the older instruments was from trees left un touched for much longer they sound better....
I'll buy this. Denser wood is more resonant. Fact. edit : Although does the wood in my 30 year old G&L make it sound noticeably better than it's modern counterpart's?
 21.
Depends at which point the wood is being dried. If it's at the pre-production phase then there may be a small difference. If it's post production then most basses are sealed with layers of primer so the chances of the wood drying out are seriously curtailed.
True, although the area around screws holes provide a great opportunity for moisture ingression.
 22.
...to act as a control instrument in a decades-long experiment involving the acquisition of not one, but at least two new instruments... hmmm... As a musician, GAS-fiend and former scientist, I'M TOTALLY ON IT. Just need to build a hermetically sealed stronghold. Oh, and I need to move house first in order to accommodate the apparatus.
Don't forget to tell us how you get on.
 23.
Well there is an element of truth in the fact that old seasoned timber resonate and responds much better to the touch and feel, than a fresh cut one.....
That's interesting GW. Can go into more detail of your experience of this please.
 24.
So... can we just indulge a couple of questions from a wood numpty (i.e. me) to try to separate the BS from the fact? 1) If a bass is made with non-optimally-dried wood (i.e. probably most of the mass-produced basses on the planet), and the wood then dries out as it ages, can that offer any change/improvement in tone (acoustically at least... let's ignore for now the possibility that the electrics are more important)? (Or will it just knack the finish?) 2) I've read a fair bit of stuff (probably unrooted in reality) about woods somehow being "played in" over the years, particularly with acoustic guitars. Like the resonances "open up" or something. (Could be related to moisture content, I suppose, or could be something else... or purely psychological.) Thoughts?
1) I believe it to be the latter..... you've seen my '80 G&L right? 2) I've never owned an instrument long enough to tell. Although I do have a 12 string Yamaha guitar which I've owned since the early 80's but I'm buggered if I can remember what it sounded like then compared to now. My guess is that it's all just marketing spin and whimsical musings. Unless you keep an instrument hermetically sealed and monitored it's moisture content us going to fluctuate with the ambient atmospherics. I guess glue might change it's characteristics irreversibly over time. I dunno.
