Jazz wiring diagram for series/parallel plus blend pot
Ou7shined replied to thisnameistaken's topic in Repairs and Technical
Are you saying that you can chose to make one pup louder that the other while in series? At first glance it seems this circuit looks very close to what I have done to mine - resulting in each end of the blend (on full extent) offering equal volume from both (obviously as they are in series - a loop if you like) and the middle section boosts the two as a side-effect of my fix to create the two channels for my Schack. Grrr, I was looking forward to a quiet evening in, now I've got to go and build a whole new bass to try this out... after my tea like. -

I'll look up some reviews! Any models in particular. Thanks for chiming in mate, I semi-recall a heft drinking session in Moffat! Haha...
Ah ha the penny drops. How's it going Connor. That was some night eh? Yeah, Fralins are seriously good Jazz pups. I have a set in one of my homemades along with a Aguilar OBP-3 (wired for 18v) and man it brings a smile to my face every time I hear it live. I have the single coil ones in my bass but I've heard good things about the split coil jobs and always fancied trying them, if only out of curiosity. Having heard your playing style I'd easily recommend this combo to you. I think you'd probably get some joy out of a John East pre too.
hmm to be its just a used bass. Will it improve my playing... NO Will I play like the last owner... NO Will it be over priced just because some famous chap used it... YES Im not knocking it...But its just a used bass and not that pretty either!!
You're obviously too young to have been touched by it's magic Steve. For me, this bass is more iconic than any Jaco or Wooten original bass. -
I was thinking it would win brown note strength, mud, weight, dimensions, DC resistance, number of turns, number of coils and amount of metal used in the construction thereof
Right, although the majority of your catagories mean virtually zip in the real world .... GAME ON *clicks finger* Mudbucker vs '51 SC P 1 brown note = win (although yet to be proven) 2 mud = win (it's a given, the clue's in the name) 3 weight = lose (lighter wins) 4 dimensions = lose (too much chrome - your words not mine ) 5 DC resistance = NA (+ or - means squat - too many other factors) 6 number of turns = NA (the presumption of more winds = better sound is flawed) 7 number of coils = win 8 amount of metal used = lose (bad for the planet and old bassists backs - also see catagory 3) 9 aggression = lose 10 top end = lose 11 growl = lose punch = lose 3 : 6 to the '51. QED old chap. I'll have your cards please.
Makes me kinda sad to see he's selling it if I'm honest Wonder why? I know he's still pretty pissed off at getting next to no Clash royalties for his work with them Can't be skint can he?
He needs it for the dentist bill. -
I have to say that the Telebass humbucker would win most things in a game of Top Trumps
Would it win aggression, top end, growl, punch? I know who's side I'd be on.

There's a reason to be cheerful right there. -
They are fairly common but are more associated with expansion and contraction of the neck and pocket and their respective resistances to each other. Provided you don't do it again, it should remain fairly stable... but you'd be the best judge of that as only you know how big a whack you gave it.
or I would say there aren't much more different pickups than these two which have been fitted to the same type of bass during a production run
But which is better? There's only one way to find out....

Haha two very contrasting opinions about two different basses with the same name. Some clarification might help.
-
I'll get back to you with some mock-ups when I get time but this fella seems to cover a few bases for you at once (chrome hardware though)
-
I have a couple of custom made ones - assuming you mean the 50's P and not the mudbucker P version. They have a very distinctive old school, woody tone compared to the split P versions and sing with flats on.
I have a vision of my next bass, and an offer of "is there anything at all that you would like for your 50th birthday ?" from my lovely wife. Jazz neck - Fretless/unlined/matching headstock. Gold Fender type hardware. EMG pickups, naturally. Two words. Lindy Fralin.

I remember (back in my 20's) spending a sizable amount of time during one particularly strong mushy-trip with the 2 guitarist from my then band, slowly but firmly strumming an Em chord on an old acoustic guitar followed by a flamboyant swoop of my arm, over and over and over and asking my two equally out of it cohorts "Can you hear it.... No. Can you heeeeear it?" To me it was layer upon fantastic layer of radiant musical emotion enveloping an irresistible beacon inviting the listener to join an odyssey to discover the source of the "secret of music".... to them it was just some jelly-brained tit-w@nk in the corner doing their heads in.

Ain't I the bad guy. My apologies to the buyer if I have "panicked" them. I have no reason to disbelieve that this bit of kit can and will do what these 2 great guys claim it can. My personal experience of a similar unit (a custom built box with switches, wires and no electronic components - bar a powered led) driving 2 amps prevents me from using a non-buffered version - hence my initial involvement in this thread. I regret adding specific brand names to my earlier post as it clouded the issue.
It's unbuffered and it's a passive circuit, the only power requirements are for the leds Point taken on your concerns but you shouldn't experience any of those problems with this unit, I used it with a multitude of amps and DI's and a crazy combination of fx and never had an issue. It's never had any grounding or phasing issues though of course ymmv. Additionally a buffered version while probably being around 5 times more expensive would likely have more issues. You'd need at least 2 Boss LS-2's to achieve this and its still wouldn't do the same thing or sound as good. The whole unit is point to point and true bypass. Hope this helps
I'm glad it sold, now I can speak freely. With respect.... It's a simple fact of electronics that if you divide a straight unbuffered signal down two cables it will have less strength at the other end. Of course it will be less noticeable if you are sending the signal down a pair of short cables into an effects loop which may boost the signal anyway. I had a simple passive ABY which worked flawlessly at home and some venues but occasionally in the field it gave me big problems (it's more down to the overall disparity in the venue's earthing than the quality of our gear) therefore it couldn't be relied upon. There are true-bypass, buffered pedals by Morley, Radial etc. on the market that are nowhere near 5 times the price - £70-150 - and you could make one at home for a fraction of that. And again with respect, although I know what you are getting at, the bit about LS-2's is misleading. I just thought I'd reply to this as I was hearing it like that guy in the advert "Free cake! ... They don't know that ... Free cake!" but were not allowed to say owt while it's an active FS thread.
