Have to quibble with you there my man - the choke is connected to a particular position on the varitone on an EB-3 (either 1 or 4 depending on the age). It is connected to the mid range control of a Ripper. It is connected to the (passive) bass control on a Victory Artist/Custom. It is not there as a buffer, it is a tone shaping device. http://www.flyguitars.com/gibson/bass/EB3_schematic.php http://www.flyguitars.com/gibson/bass/ripperSchematic.php http://www.flyguitars.com/gibson/bass/Vict...omschematic.php http://www.flyguitars.com/gibson/bass/Vict...stschematic.php
Ah well there you go, another use for it. I wonder how it removes the mids in a Gibby but not in the control plate in the OP's post? In the varitone bass I built I used a choke for the very reason I mentioned above, I'd presumed Gibby used it on their varitones for the same reason too. I deferrer to your far superior Gibson knowledge than mine though... which as you know is zip.
So what does a choke actually do? In the old days it was used until the engine heated up enough for it to be put back in
You also used to have one in front of the car radio power supply lead to stop the distributor revving and ticking all the way through the Jimmy Young show. They are the most basic electronic device... maybe even the first. In this case they act a bit like a phantom coil.
Gibson fitted chokes to basses for years. That's probably why no-one else did it then
I believe the Gibby chokes are to kill the "pop" when swicthing modes though.
Is that the cylindrical looking thing on the pots??
Yeah, that's what I'm presuming they are. If they are chokes (inductors) then I guess they could potentially alter the tone somewhat .... only aplicable if you can tell the difference between a single coil and a bucker like.
Looks like a maple neck to me???
Yeah he's had a brain fart while writing up the auction... ... however it's setting alarm bells ringing now (rare bass, dodgy pics). Any potential buyers should do some proper checks with the seller before committing. It is Collection in Person though which is somewhat reassuring. The year of manufacture and the serial tie up ... but I guess you could simply pull that info off the net if you wanted.

Yeah but the pots have chokes ... er sorry... "new hum canceling technology" fitted and there's a vintage USA [s]snake[/s] oil can capacitor.

Post retracted: It's a fair cop, I hadn't seen that the neck not fitting properly had been mentioned earlier. If I had been more specific then none of this fuss would have been kicked up. My deepest apologies to Chris, whom I have great respect for, for inadvertently casting aspersions that there might be anything else suspect with the bass or with Chris himself - this in all honesty was not my intention. My aloof wording caused an upset but was as a result of me trying to adhere to similar self censorship rules (ie no specific criticisms) as per the actual Basses For Sale section, ironically out of respect. It has also been suggested to me in strong terms that in future I should use PM rather than speaking openly (or overtly in this case ) when it appears that a member is selling a bass (presumably even in discussion sections) I have taken this advice on board and will personally endeavour to do so from now on. Sorry to everyone for being so out of order. Rich
You'd probably get a better response if you posted this in the 'Items Wanted' Section.
How so? There's a bunch of potterers who hang out in this thread in particular who might be able to help this guy out with a nice old Jap pup.... the reason why I recommended him do it in the first place. -
A little bit of soap on the screw tip helps ease it into place without chewing up the slots.
I bet you say that to all the girls. -
A very rare opportunity. -> linky The pics could be better but I'd say this was a mahogany body. The fact that it is near mint is a bonus and hints at his BIN being on the low side.
Thanks for the advice =] iv had extremely little soldering experience when i was about 12 which was 8 years ago i havnt touched it since but i guess now is a better time than any to start lol. Can i get a diagram anywhere? once iv seen a diagram and had a go ill be find for next time.
Good man. Sorry I edited my post while you were typing up yours. There's one or two links for diagrams there for you.
Lol yeh was thinking about it i have no idea where to start though lol any tips?
That's tough one to answer. How much soldering experience have you got? I taught myself how to do it when I was about 12... that was over 30 years ago now so I kind of take it for granted.I probably solder better than I can ride a bike or swim. Best thing I can say just now is have a look at the components you need (2 pots, a jack socket, a capacitor and some wire) find out where to buy them and go for it - you don't even have to understand electronics as it is just a passive circuit - just follow the diagrams you find all over the net. The beauty of soldering is that it is always reversible so if you mess it up just desolder it and start again. edit : If all that sounds a bit too much (but it really isn't) then do what Jerry B said and buy one of KiOgon's pre mades, they have had good reviews on here.
...Also im looking for a new wiring kit with pots anyone got any suggestions?
The P bass loom is the easiest wiring job on the planet. Maybe now is the time to learn a new skill? You can put together the entire kit for a fraction of the price of a pre-made loom. Only go for one if you are temped by the claims of "better sounding" parts... which of course they don't deliver.

To be fair a good one won't cost too much without having to plump for the budget offerings. For example you can pick up a brand new Wizard for £50... second hand prices are much sweeter obviously. A good source for P pups too is old Jap crap. I've been hanging on to a wicked sounding pup that came off a 70s Hondo - it has a beautiful old skool P thump you don't get from new Fenders (for example) and certainly has more tone than the characterless budget pups you get. If you fancy that route, drop a line to some of the Jap Crap guys and see what they have in their parts boxes for you.

I had a '70s Jap six-string tele fretboard do the exact same thing. The lacquer turns really brittle and chips off. Easy to fix but requires a de then re-fret. Looks like this re-finisher couldn't be bothered doing the whole bass (maybe the neck's worth more untouched ).
Didn't know you made basses for people? Or am i miss reading you? If you are expect a knock on you're door (knowing me, 3 hours later than orginally planned) at some point with some crazy specs for some ridiculous bass Though i probably would
Nope you're bang on the money. Finishing off a P for someone this week. (I might cheekily post it in the gear porn section later seeing as the luck owner isn't a member) Try me.
You wouldnt happen to build basses would you...? Also based in the 'deen right?
Yes and yes. Actually I'm based in the Bridge of Don... and you're welcome to come and check out my wee operation anytime.

Repair your flat (hang on... hear me out ) then employ an up coming local luthier to custom build you something to your exact specifications for half the price and half the waiting time of a big name luthier. Twa birds wi a' steen.

I think we should start a database thread (sticky) of sellers who "know nothing about guitars" but are punting what they obviously know is not what it seems or is fake.
