1.
Semibreve? What's that in seconds?
This much *clap* nods *clap*.
2.
Sadly im completely useless with a chisel
How good are you with a router?
3.
Sustain isn't marketing! It's a about being asked or required to hold a note for 1, 2 or more bars and being able to do it. You may never have to do this in the music you play but there are situations where it might be needed. A bass that sustains well usually sounds better across the board. If you're asked to hold a note and reply, "Sorry mate, I don't believe in that, it's just marketing", you won't be asked back. Again, that might not bother some of you but please concede that it does matter to some of us.
Good point well made.
4. I'd have to argue that it is simply marketing. To get a bass to sustain longer you have to up the build quality and the coupling of the hardware and use selected materials. This much is fact. Musically however it has little value to us lowenders. Unproven claims of greater sustain may well be simple marketing though.
5. Wasn't there a similar thread to this lately where the general consensus of replies was to go chisel but the OP decided to go router (probably decided before posting the thread) and made a total dog's cock of it?
6. Purdy Sterling..... .... wish I could say the same for the 'ray though. Poor wee thing.
7. I have a thing for black knobs... my girlfriend is worried. PM'd
8.
Now for sale. Pickup only or can meet for costs.
The sunstroke's playing havoc with my brain cell Steve. How does this work then? You meet up but the buyer pays the sellers costs (presumably return fare)... why don't they just keep on driving all the way then?
9. You can actually watch the relief change as you turn the Allen key. What you might be getting confused with is whether or not the change is stable (chances are that if you are tweaking a previously perfectly playable bass then it will be). You will often read from the keen DIYers on here saying to give it a quarter turn then leave it for a day - well that's fine if you've got a week to set your relief. In my experience, you adjust the neck to the required relief then tune it all up, maybe go for another tweak if required then retune... if it's out the following day, just do it again.
10. I generally have a fleeting sand between coats, otherwise you will start to build up an orange peel effect. Generally you can tell if it's ready for sanding the second the paper hits it - water will help if you are a bit premature. I stop at 4-5 coats in a day then let it cure for a day at least, usually more. Leaving your neck in a warm dry place will help bring down curing times. It's never too early to get out the 600 grade, it's just the rough precursor to the 1000+ grades.
11.
How do you like the Line 6 UX2? I'm considering getting one as it comes with pretty much everything! Beening looking around for an interface/all in one stuff so i'd like to hear your thoughts! (As i've never liked Line 6 amps so was skeptical haha) Like the recordings man!
To be honest I have nothing to compare it with.... but I am very pleased with it. It does what it is supposed to do and I've had no problems other than operator "head in ass" syndrome. I personally don't have much use for all the bundled software (which I thought at the time of purchase was a selling point but kind of turned out to be another way to get money off you - most of the the free presets have elements missing - of course they can be purchased in packs for an additional fee). Unfortunately the main s/w (Pod Farm etc) is optimised more for the guitar and there is not much support for bass (ok you can buy add-ons for like $99). I've founnd myself just using the basic included s/w interface (Gear Box) with no amp or cab emulation then tweaking the sounds in Reaper. So for all that, a UX1 and their basic s/w would suffice... although the UX1 doesn't have the phantom power for mics I need.
12. Thanks for you participation guys. I'm kind of more after comments on the DAW, recording and mixing side of things though, not my ability as a song writer.
I am not sure its bad - but i think its a few minutes of nothing happening. The vox sample at the end, why dont you try chopping it up and making it yours? Bring it in earlier, be a bit creative. There is so much you can do to make things interesting, a DAW is open for just about anthing you want. Not a knock by the way, just an observation.
Like I said earlier this is the tune without the lyrics and other layers. The Radio 4 guy was just a joke I added on (perhaps a tip o' the hat to Roger Waters) - the bird is staying though.
Reminded me of Chris Isaak for some reason..... yeah sounds ok but not much going on. Keep at it!
Haha I hear what you mean. I knew there was some kind of 80's thing catching my ear, maybe that's it .... there's not much you can do with just over 2 minutes of a "how am I doing so far" instrumental. Strange though it may seem, there are new elements brought in at least every 4 bars.
Enjoyable track. Now you have the first one down, don't mess with it and try to improve it. Create a new track and put in more ideas etc. I'm really rubbish at it but I do keep having a go! This is my effort on MySpace lol Keep it coming
Cheers. I like your no rules approach. Layin Back has real potential for a band to explore.
13. I've re-upped a slightly different mix. Over a dozen plays on the old mix and no comments. Is it that bad?
14. Go and try some 5ers first and see what spacing feels best. This whole thing about small/big hands requiring small/big spacings is a fallacy - it's more to do with technique than anything. For example, I have huge hands and can play any sized 4, 5, 6 neck (given a few minutes to get used to it). I play guitar too and find the transition between the two very easy.
15. I thought I post a follow up to my first attempt thread. I found myself with some time and inclination the last couple of days so I decided to work on this simple guitar loop I'd been noodling along to on my Korg PX4D. bass = homemade G&L inspired bass (seen here) - single coil mode for the main riff and series humbucker w/ omg mode for the ascending bass line guitar = homemade bitsa Strat with G&L Legacy Special pups and PTB Tone circuit drums = Addictive Drums (demo version) additional content lifted off Radio 4... no really All guitars went > Korg PX4D > Line6 UX2 > laptop - and were recorded live in Reaper. (I think it actually took me longer to reinstall the UX2 on my laptop than it did to lay down the tracks ) I have lyrics and a melody (and more layer ideas) to put down but I quite like this short instrumental version too (as mentioned in the other thread my vocals aren't great ). I've never created drum tracks (or anything else for that matter) using MIDI before, so last night was a baptism of fire. I had no idea what I was doing but stumbled a bout for a bit then it sort of fell into place and this is what I came up with.... not bad for a total noob. I tried the Bluenoise plugin first but I didn't like the samples, which was a surprise as it comes highly recommended - maybe it's not compatible with win7 64bit. I don't have studio monitors so I used a combination of headphones (very bassy) and my NAD hi-fi system (annoys the neighbours) for setting the levels. This is what worries me most is that I may have mixed it too bass-centric. I also had a hard time with the kick drum - not being a drummer I'm not sure what I like, in my mind I think I'd like it to be clicky but I found if made it too clicky it emptied a space in the overall sound but when I tried to fill the space it became too boomy - I hope I have found a decent middle ground. Comments, criticisms on my recording/mixing "techniques" welcome. I want to get better at this.
16. I think they have a similar-ish profile but the heels are very different - the Sterling is a 5 (or 6 - can't remember which) bolt.
17. So much for "UK only" At least you got a nice case for it. I have the same one for my Stingray. Welcome to the forum btw.
18. Probably not. In my experience you might get lucky with the pup rout but the control cavity almost never lines up with different makes of P. Best thing to do is try one. If it doesn't fit, sell it on and get one made.... ...or get someone good at that sort of thing to rout out the cavities to match a p/g of your choice.
19. My first port of call would be to get some switch cleaner in the pots and even a wee squirt on the jack contacts. While you're under the hood check to see if there are any noticeable breaks in the wire/solder joints. Maplin's own or Servisol
20. Sounds like an earthing issue that could be easily rectified by a good guitar tech. As for the oily marks, I have no personal experience with this particular model's finish but I have noticed a similar thing with basses that I've finished matt/satin myself - I don't think they are fobbing you off.
21.
How do you use the badass 2 without cutting the string grooves skez
It works quite well... on a well set up bass. And even if you dig in they don't fly off the saddle. I'd only really file them if you had height adjustment issues or extremely low tension strings. umph : I see you've been on here a few times since I replied to your PM. Why no reply to me yet?
22.
If the neck hasn't gone I will take it. Should be able to collect it too.
Nope, still very much up for this. Just waiting for Michael to get back to me with his details.
