  1. Don't get angry with me ...
  2. The late Spender Dryden, rolling tape in the studio whilst waiting (in vain...) for the others to arrive and continue 'After Bathing At Baxters'. Certainly not the 'best' track on the album, but not without merit.
  3. Nothing. ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... I'm a drummer.
  4. Can you record on two tracks, one 'dry', the other with (too loud...) distortion, then mix to your taste in playback..? It's quite 'normal' to mix from several tracks to get the exact tone required. Just a thought.
  5. I don't doubt this ^^^^ for a second; it was the 'therefore' that I found odd, implying that every different band necessitated a different bass, just because it's a different band. No issue otherwise; rock on..!
  6. Hmm... I would question the 'therefore'. In my rather long drumming career, I wouldn't like to even guess how many different bands and formations I've played with; I have always used my (admittedly very excellent...) Camco drums for all. From Big Band variety, 'typique' Caribbean calypso, musette, pop/rock, folk and more... It's all in the fingers, you see. If I had to have a different kit for each different genre, I'd need a bloomin' big cottage..!
  7. Nah, the string tension had caused the front to collapse, probably gently over time, but I can't see what could provoke such a state except damp, and a lot of it, too..! These guitars and basses are not prone to this (I have several archtops, both basses and guitars...), and that's the only time I've seen one in this state. Where is it now..? Gone to join McCartney's violin bass in the sky..?
  8. How long have you got..? Late '60s, we ( a younger brother and I...) were looking for guitars and/or amps, but with a budget of... Well even less than that. We had heard of a second-hand shop in Hampton Wick; it turned out be be rather the front parlour of a terraced house, stuffed full of all sorts of 'tat', and hosted by one Mrs Nichols (spelling..?). Despite the ... er... 'low quality' of the offerings piled around, the asking prices were rather more than we had in mind. I did manage to unearth a slightly-less-battered guitar case, in which resided a Hofner E2 Florentine President, which, after much haggling and starting to leave, became mine. I can't remember the price now, but it was expensive to me at the time. It has its own story for another time; back to the bass. On a wall hung a Hofner Verithin bass, which intrigued me until, upon closer inspection, it could be seen that the belly of the bass was not convex, but concave..! Probably due to water damage at some point, and a very difficult thing to repair; the poor thing's fate was sealed by a price akin to a new bass..! We left, with me clutching my new find, but the vision of that bass has stayed with me ever since. Fast forward a few decades; I was now in France, and had acquired a Hofner Verithin 6-string (another boyhood dream guitar, and very excellent too...). I came across an ad for a Verithin bass (they are quite rare, especially in good condition...) in Nottingham. I contacted the Seller (this is pre-interwebs daze; postal correspondance was the thing...). I reserved it, and came to the UK as a foot passenger on the ferry. Another younger brother picked me up from the coast, and drove me up country to see this bass. The Seller wanted only cash, so we went to a local bank for me to draw out £500, and the bass was mine. Back to the coast the next day, with the bass in a very lightweight gig bag. I couldn't resist playing it on the deck of the ferry as we crossed the Channel, to the amusement of other passengers. After a few months I renewed the black nylon 'Trubass' strings, which are still on it now. The bass is currently hanging on the wall just behind my head as I type this; I only have to reach up to get it down and play. It has done its fair share of gigs in past years, but I only use it now for playing at home and recording (I'm a drummer...). I have other basses (and guitars...), but this bass, for me, is 'the One'. Douglas
  9. Yes, and I can ...
  10. What have you done with the real TimR..? Is he OK..? Is this a ransom job..? ...
  11. A long-standing weakness that I must try to overcome is my excessive modesty, without which I'd be perfect.
  12. And the winner is... @Doctor J Here, then, is your Winner's Certificate (download and save as pdf file, then proudly print and frame...) ... BC_Chal_Cert_2023_08.pdf ... which looks like this (but bigger, of course..!)...
  13. I've not seen any sign of it on GC; if I do, I shall abstain from there too until it's gone.
  14. Yes, but there's also a 'Vendor List' button, which brings up the long, long list of their clients, very many of which have a 'Legitimate Interest' box ticked by default. This 'Legitimate Interest' is a sort of 'Get Out of Jail Free' card for taking info for whatever purpose they deem legitimate; I unchecked them all, which took quite a long time. Several hundred, not '8 or 9'; they're just the visible ones to make one think it's all been covered. It has not; there' a lot of sneaky, hidden stuff that one has to be really motivated to not consent to. It's at the grey borderline of scammy as a method of operating, and I'll have none of it, just because it's so cleverly designed to make it very, very difficult to opt out. It's these methods I object more to than the use of any commercial info I might be giving away. As it happens, my statistics are so 'far out' that they are more 'noise' for any analysis, but it's for the principle of openness and transparency that wrankles. This company has as much contempt from me as I can spare, and severely taints any others using it.
  15. I'm out until it stops.
  16. OK for a trial period. I shall not log into BC for four weeks; if there is still any sign of this stuff after that period, I'll renounce BC until it goes away. I'm not a paranoid 'they're following me' freak, but this is totally over the limit. If the site needs more money, I'll gladly consider any other means of contributing (modestly...); this kind of 'partnership' is not acceptable to me. I'll be deleting all unwanted cookies when I exit here (I do this regularly anyway...). Thanks for all the hard work and tough decisions involved in keeping BC afloat; back in four week's time. Meanwhile... Have a splendid day. Douglas PS : I'll log in just for the BC Compo Challenge Certificate this evening; next month's Challenge is, however, compromised. 'Sigh...'
  17. These folk ... Pro Audio Service Ltd ... ... list SWR bass and combo amps as among their repair models, so may be worth contacting (email, telephone..?) if you need info, help, advice..? They're based in the Midlands, apparently. Worth noting..?
  18. Ah, I see the problem. Do you have any colleagues that travel to better-served nations on a regular basis..? A repair would take longer, of course. Have you found the schematics (a simple search brought them up immediately for me...)..? If the power output transistors are now duff, it would be possible to install another output amp module altogether, at worst case...
  19. The schematic diagrammes are readily available for download on t'web, along with the User manual. These, given to a decent repair technician may enable at least an estimate of what's gone wrong..?
  20. So true, and more so. The drummer here (Gary 'Spacey' Foote is better known principally (and still not enough...) as a saxophonist, and yet the drums here are impeccable. This is Ms Armatrading singing and playing whilst ill (as she explains at the start...), and yet... What a star..! Far too far under the radar (but maybe that's for the best..?). This band cooks..!
  21. ... visible only to those that pay their subs.
  22. To me, it's the difference between going to see a show, and going to listen to live music. I'm not at all sure I'd attend a concert when the conductor waved his baton before a wide video screen, whatever the piece. I watched and listened to the Pink Floyd and Jefferson Airplane in their early years, with their psychedelic light show, but all the music was played by those on stage, in plain sight. I wouldn't have gone if the players were on screen, or pre-recorded. Ultimately, and in the extreme, it can become a DJ perched above the floor setting off digital files; I don't attend such entertainment either. It might be good entertainment for some, but that's not what I appreciate as a Good Musical Event. Disclaimer : I'm old.
