  1. Good evening, dasitor, and ... Plenty to read and amuse you here, and lots to learn and share.
  2. Pearls before swine, Ivan; pearls before swine.
  3. Sorry to have walked into your cabbage patch; it seems I must bow to your superior erudition. That'll larn me to attempt any expansion on a potentially interesting topic. Please forgive the intrusion; it won't happen again.
  4. It could maybe be admitted that musical 'fact' and 'absolutes' can, and do, change and evolve over time. Minor was not admissible at one point in Western music, nor even the black notes. Dissonance has a fairly chequered history, too. What is considered sublime by some can become heretical to others later, and conversely. There are, of course other 'musics' out there, too, as you doubtless know. Javanese scales sound pretty 'out' to many, but are well understood by the musicians playing 'em. There is a certain subjectivity to it all. 'Music concrete'..? Electronica..? All is not C-D-E etc.
  5. I stand by my list. (although the very notion of 'young and impressionable' rankles somewhat..! )
  6. Cheeky beggar. Just you wait; I'll be telling your Mum about this, you just see if I don't...
  7. Can't, the list is too long; they all had their part to play, and I wouldn't rank any above (or below...) another. A sample..? Well, just a few, but there's more, many more... Jefferson Airplane, Grateful Dead, Fairport Convention, The Incredible String Band, The Martin Spicer Band, Porpoise, The Alan Stirling Band, The Daub'z, Ry Cooder, NIN... (Drops off to sleep, numbed fingers caressing the keyboard until they slip away. Low snoring ensues...)
  8. You too, Raeman..! Get to bed; you've a long day tomorrow.
  9. Will you lot all shut up and let an old man sleep, for goodness sake..?
  10. Good afternoon, Raeman, and ... Plenty to read and amuse you here, and lots to learn and share.
  11. Good afternoon, TB , and ... Plenty to read and amuse you here, and lots to learn and share.
  12. Always keen to hear new stuff, I was intrigued enough by the enthusiasm shown in this topic to give 'em a whirl through their Youtube presence. Luckily, I was doing other stuff at the same time, so I didn't completely waste my afternoon. Good gracious; I knew, several decades ago, a few folks that would listen to stuff like this, but they've, for the most part, either stopped smoking that stuff now and got their life back, or are dead from over-use. In any case, I couldn't stand more than half an album or two; I completed none. Would I do it again..? Ha..! Still, I did learn some new stuff, but I'm not so keen, now. How odd..!
  13. S'easy; I'm a drummer..! No, I was helped by playing around with Guitar Pro for a couple of minutes, listening to the notes and popping them onto the stave. It's a bit more complicated transcribing Rimsky-Korsakov, but a similar principle.
  14. No, but it took me just a couple of minutes to drum this up, if it helps. It's just the essentials; sort the rest out yourself... Drun.pdf Hope this helps.

    hello!

Good evening, Stu, and ... Plenty to read and amuse you here, and lots to learn and share.
  16. Good evening, Hal, and ... Plenty to read and amuse you here, and lots to learn and share.
  17. T'won't be long before you're chopping it in for a 5-slice one.
  18. Good evening, Owen, and ... Plenty to read and amuse you here, and lots to learn and share.
  19. Good evening, LD, and ... Plenty to read and amuse you here, and lots to learn and share. I, too, am a Grandad, and am still learning each and every day. It's true, it's never too late, but that's no reason for waiting around. Whatever it is, just do it..!
  20. Good evening, Karl, and ... Plenty to read and amuse you here, and lots to learn and share. Ah, the Casady bass; it's on my 'bucket' list (and I'd better get cracking on shortening that..! )
  21. [Terry Bozzio] Yes, I insisted on having three mics for every part of the kit, but all I got was this stinking single overhead..! What; aren't I good enough or something..? [/Terry Bozzio]
  22. While being pertinent, one could also argue that a listener, 'live' to the set does not have this luxury of fine balance between the elements of the kit. It's the sum that's heard. An equivalent could be having individual pole piece adjustment on a bass pick-up; some use a single bar magnet, which works well, too. It all depends on the result looked for. Personally, and excepting specific needs, I find that the whole kit is balanced enough (cymbals included...), helped along by the playing techniques adopted. If I want a crash to be a bit louder, I hit it differently. Problem solved (most of the time...). I'd use separate mics if I want, for instance, specific treatment (Flanger on the cymbals..? Delay on the snare..? etc...); otherwise a simulation of what someone in the audience would hear is my basic goal. The bass drum mic is only there, for example, because the overheads won't pick it up enough. Even then, a solo mic further out can do that job, too. It all depends...
  23. Ah, I see. Not just the dimensions, then. Would this work..? Find a piece of wood slightly higher than the bridge. Slacken the strings a little, just enough to (carefully...) slide this piece under (pivot it, then put it upright to support the strings...), then remove the bridge. Any mileage..?
  24. You're doing this deliberately, aren't you..? It's a plot; I'm sure it's a plot. Resist... Resist... I must resist...
