Are you playing it after the initial tuning, I don't think its unusual for the strings tuning to change a little through atmospheric conditions or by being played for a bit and the difference between 440 and 442/443 hz would not be problematic in a band situation, I don't think anyone would notice (maybe the odd blind piano tuner). I don't think its much of a problem really.

Bought a Highway one P bass from Karl, all very easy and a pleasure to deal with.

Ive got an x factor and they are great basses, very playable indeed. Has anyone got a kubicki factor (not x factor or key factor), ive never seen one in real life and haven't even seen many pictures either.

I voted other, if a band who are on before me want to use my amp thats ok, bands playing after me have to use there own stuff, i dont want to wait around all night usually.

One thing to be aware of is that due to the bridge design some strings are not quite long enough, you can end up with the wrapped section being part of the speaking length, usually on the e string.

I think the magnums are great, love mine. The front pickup is good for dub and alot more besides, it has individual screwdriver operated level controls for each string. Back pickup is a kind of humbucker. You can get a pretty wide range of sounds.

Hi shaun, id check the specs of your amp carefully if i were you, i suspect its the total impedance of your amp that is 4 ohms and can drive 2 8ohm or 1 4ohm cabinet. I think your combo speaker is probably 8 ohms, if this is so (and your amp does have a total 4 ohm rating) then you should make sure your new cab is 8 ohms. Before you add another cab you should be sure of the impedance of your amp and combos speaker.

I think its partly because most people who want a fender do so because there favourite player from some classic 60s or 70s band used a fender and it was a four string not a five string. I think when most people think 5 string they think "modern".

The trace elliot pre set is a kind of bass and treble boost and mid cut, its meant for slapping mainly as far as i know.

I gig in london a fair bit, and in my experience theres pretty much always a house rig which is pretty usable, i tend to take a head even if ive been informed that backline is provided. We tend to go by car/van and i wouldnt want to take any giggable bass rig on the tube.

Interesting post, its my personal opinion that you get a slightly different timbre depending on which finger you use, could just be the fact that each finger contacts the string in a slightly different place, i often use one finger to play a fairly easy line where consistency of tone (or possibly attack) is important. I think that in terms of sound rather than ease of playing one finger can actually be better.

Bought a trace elliot amp from Bobby, he was really helpful and friendly, just the kind of person you would want to deal with. Definitely recommended.

Ive never heard of Axl basses, im guessing there pretty cheap? Fretless bass is alot harder to play than fretted and personally i wouldn't recomend one for a beginner, but if you like a challenge..... Also cheap fretless bass's can be pretty unpleasant. Give it a try and see i suppose.

I like trace amps although you do have to use the graphic eq to get a sound and i suppose that makes them less intuitive than some other amps to use. Its Marshall amps and to a lesser extent ashdown that i prefer to avoid..

As long as you keep the output of the amp low youll be fine, but many amps do not sound there best while working at a comparitively low volume so id personally say the 1000 watt amp is overkill and you would be better off with a lower powered model really.

I think watt for watt a valve amp is in practice maybe 25%(ish) louder, due to the usable as opossed to unusually nasty distorsion charachteristics which enable you to use a somewhat overdriven sound where you would have to back off a solid state amp. Having said that i dont think 120 watts would be enough for the band you describe.

Good combo though, my first 'real' high quality amp/combo.[/quote] Mine has no horn just single 10 , maybe the trebleyness was caused by the horn, i imagine a horn would be more useful on this kind of combo than on most cabs.

I own a blx 130 combo and another (more expensive) way to improve it alot is to add a 2 x 10 cab, as you say the blx ported cab acts kind of like a sub with good bass responce in a small box but with poor higher frequency sound, but when combined with a 2 x 10 you get the full output and a pretty good system for small or quiet gigs. Obviously wont work with blx 80 - no ext speaker facility.
