I have a Status eclipse (wooden neck) and it or any other status ive played would not be my choice for a warm sound. Tried to use my status in a reggae band before and although it kind of worked there was a strong high mid or treble element i just could not seem to get rid of. I'm not saying a status couldnt do this but i think its far less suitable than your average bass for a warm sound.btw the eclipse was i think Status's most upmarket wooden neck bass with the same pickups and electronics (bass/treble/volume/pan and a switch; its a bright switch i think) as the graphite neck models.
2. Used to like FNM, saw them live in 1998 and was amazed at how talented Mike Patton was.
3. Definately familiar with Al Anderson, a great guitarist and piece of reggae history - very cool.
4. I cant think of any reason why playing quietly through a powerful amp could damage it, valves or not and it should sound fine at low volumes.
5. Ive always found the lower the better, i once set up my status eclipse to be really low, it was almost unusable for fingerstyle but so easy to slap on.
6. If i understand the problem is that the sound from your rig fails to provide the volume or balanced sound you want out front. If you cant rely on the PA (which would be the best/easyist option)then you could buy the above mentioned big twin 2 or some other PA style bass cabs like acme b2. However these cabs although able to provide a fairly balanced sound throughout the venue (most bass cabs will not do this and are really more for onstage use) are expensive and power inefficient so you may also have to buy a big new very powerful amp aswell as new cabs!. Buying a powered cab would help somewhat with volume but probably not with evenness of sound. Unfortunately the best option (imo) is to use the PA and if neccesary trade it in for a more powerful one. I cant see an easy answer as the problem seems to be that the pa is not up to the job. As Razze06 said earlier its a good idea to go outfront at soundcheck with a long lead and listen to the sound you make, sound onstage can be very different.
7. I have one of these (from new), its been reliable and is not too heavy (one handed carry but not exactly a casual weight), enough power for most gigs, fairly decent tone shaping ability. If you want a fairly cheap and powerful decent sounding amp it could be a good choice. I think the DI is all right. Not a spectacular amp though, and there are more modern alternatives.
8. I think its good for a cab to be able to produce the lowest parts of the sound, after all if you want less bass onstage pretty much any amp has controls which can reduce the lows sent to the cab, but if youre playing through your amp with no PA for example you cant make sub bass come from a high tuned cabinet, of course to some people this may not matter at all because they never want much low bass. Also there are different cabs for different situations.
9. Yes Formby was Great, one of my earliest musical influences - still love it today
10. Presumably some of the pedals reduce the dynamic range (compress) in some way, or reduce the low frequencies, if you want to increase the (percieved) volume then compression is the most effective way, at the expense of dynamic control.
11. boringly enough a jazz bass (or similar) would probably be a good choice for funk and soul, and indeed most music
12. Guitar and electric drum kit, works better for guitar because the hats and cymbals dont sound great.
13. Ive got a t 40, it is very heavy and it does have a good range of tones , appears to be very well made, ive not been very impressed with the solidity of the low end but that's my only gripe really. Id imagine its a very good rock bass, though i dont really play rock (in a band) these days.
14. Bought a trace v6 from Andy, was very straightforward. Good communication and meeting up was very easy and efficient. A nice guy and very good to deal with.
15. Hi Andy, do you ever have a reason to go northwards at all?, im interested but kent is a long way from leicester.
16. my fave amps have been the svt classic, svt vr, trace va350 also the eden david series amps, there are many more that ive not used enough (or at all) to comment on though. Think my fave cab was an eden 4 by 10.
17. Hi, i also use a metro in a reggae band and i think it is a good amp for reggae. Personally i find that with an extension cab its loud enough for any gig, however my band (leicester reggae band The Paradimes) are not particularly loud on stage. I think running more/bigger cabs at 2.6 ohms would be worth a try, or maybe try to get the rest of the band to lower the onstage volume a bit?
Reply to Dr. TStingray, although playing over the neck and cutting treble will help (as on any bass) the sound is still poor on the lowest few notes (for reggae and similar) when compared to a fender, as you say a two pickup musicman would work fine because it has a suitably placed pickup for this sound, the standard stingray does not.
Btw I completely agree about stingrays cutting through the mix.

20. I play mostly reggae so for me it would be a precision, i agree with what Steff said about stingrays lacking warmth on the lowest notes although i do like my stingray a lot.

22. Very nice, love kubickis. Btw this is a "key factor" not a "factor".

4 Ohm Vs 8 Ohm

I dont know but i have an eden metro combo which can work at two ohms, however eden recommend its used at four ohms because it will sound better, so maybe some amps sound better at a specific impedance?
24.
You can add Lakland Decade to your list of basses with true neck pickups.
Yeah that looks like a good one, also the hofner violin bass as well.
