1. Sorry but I put Wishbass only a little higher than MDP in terms of ability in bass world. No style, no attention to detail, no consistency, no innovation, no quality. Drilling a hole straight and true is pretty much Janet & John Book 1A in Woodworking. Ive seen better designed Cloths Horses than that EUB. A
2.
It's a great shame, I've liked all the sets of pickups I've had from Wizard, I've still got a Thumper in my P Bass just now. That said, when I saw the thread title I was worried that it was another story of a small UK company going out of business, glad to see that's not the case. Out of interest, what happens to all the leftover stock? Surely there must be boxes of ready made pickups that we could still buy until he runs out, or was it a case of the pickups were made when you placed an order?
Logic would dictate that he closed when he sold the final one on the shelf. I think he actually made them to order. So he would have closed when he used up the last bobbin and foot of copper wire. A
3. Good on him. He's earnt it. My fav pick up by a long way. Even if he was a bit reluctant to do some stuff. But his health comes first and all the best to him. A This now also means that Wizard Pickups have become a finite element. S/H prices may change a bit now. A
4.
I originally wanted a grain with more of a standard subtle grain, but I'm pleased I got something a little different. I have two Warwickshire with twin jazz pickups and I really like the streamer jazzman, so was kind of inspired by that. It's a great combination.
Im not a big fan of the straight grain either but yours works A
5. It is very nice indeed Like the wood grain and finish - excellent job there A 5 string J/MM is a cool mix to. A
6. These are the ones. Ive used all mine up soz or I would have sent you one. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PP3-Spring-Clip-Battery-Holder-4-Pack-/121141816493?pt=UK_BOI_Electrical_Components_Supplies_ET&hash=item1c349d6cad Work perfect and hold the battery like a vice. A
7.
Been pretty busy trying to get this together. I've managed to line the cavity with copper foil and get the pickups hooked up and soldered all the electrics. Went to plan really, only got the pickups the wrong way round at first but was an easy fix. I just need a way to hold the battery on its side in the top left corner of the cavity. The only holder like this I can fine seems to be by Warwick, anyone know of any similar that a re a bit easier to get posted? My only issue is that the ground for the bridge doesn't seem to be drilled properly and the holes have been started at both ends but don't seem to meet in the middle. Anyone had any issues similar to this?
I might have one lying around. Nice and simple spring steel clip that sits the battery on its side. Ill dig it out or let you know where I got it from. A
8. Theres plenty of starch based degradable packaging around. Poor excuse if you ask me. A
9. Do you deliver? BTW email to follow and parcel received and already well played A
10.
Thanks apa , I'm going to have a go this week , hopefully
Try it out on a scrap piece first A
11. You drill a hole slightly smaller. To be exact it should be the dia of the solid shaft so that the serrated sections bite into the wood and keep them there. In practice (unless you can measure them) I would drill 1mm or 0.5mm too small from the O/A dia. They don't have to be too tight a fit since the strings will keep them in place anyway. If you have a pillar drill you can start with 1mm and see if it fits then you can always drill it bigger if needs be. A
12. Even better here's a link to my build with them in. Scroll down to the bridge pic and you'll see the top ferrells which are the eye letters http://basschat.co.uk/topic/189935-lucie-uber-deluxe-jazz-v/page__fromsearch__1 A
13. I used one side of eyelets. Unfortunately I'm in Portugal at the mo but when I'm back I'll post a pic A
14.
What a strange act. I think they were 'ambient dub' but that would suggest too much. The XX play songs that feel like Intros to something much larger but just as you think a hypnotic or crashing section is due... the 'song' just ends. I felt like I was being teased. There was movement but we never went anywhere. If music were sex this was tantric. Haven't felt this cheated since those Genesis albums stuffed with incomplete song ideas but real Genesis fans call those classics and I looked at the huge crowd The XX had drawn and realised I just didn't get it. But thousands do, so I must be an old fart... Oh and the way they dance... Gob-smacked.
+1 on all this. The Cowboy Junkies did it so much better and I didn't like them either. Theres minimalist then theres....... well...... Everything but the girl on Mogadon.
15. For the record Nick Cave knocked through our living room and sun room in my old house, made good the old sash windows, re-plastered the hall way and took down an old chimney stack. He did an excellent job as it happens and Ill not hear a bad word said. Id recommend him any day.* As for the 'other' Nick Cave he does some pretty good tunes in my book to. A * All 100% true - I still have the receipt.
16.
Bollocks. The D'Addario Super Long Scale are too short on the B string by about 8mm. This is on an ABZ5 so they would no doubt fit a Dingwall Super J what has a slightly shorter scale. That's £30 down the toilet then.
Sue them That's a sod! I called Strings Direct and talked them through my length needs. They are very helpful. Also there is a great guy over on TB who is all knowing about strings. Put a post over there. I needed a set for a 35" through body 5 set hence ending up with the Roto set as mentioned above. They are the longest string sets you can buy except for TI at £70 a throw!!. A
17.
Have they learnt how to make them consistently good yet?
That's another story however since I did have to get replacement G from the set then maybe not!! I got them from Strings Direct. You buy the set - RS665EL but you actually get the 4 string extra long set with an additional B. Here they are................. http://www.stringsdirect.co.uk/p/918535/rotosound-rs665el-swing-bass-stainless-steel-roundwound-bass-guitar-strings-45-130-5-string-extra-long-scale/
18. Rotosound do still make the extra long B. They just dont list it!! When I get a chance ill dig out where i got them from A
19. If you don't want the existing paint then can I have it? Its exactly what my next one is going to be painted. Just pop it in a jiffy . A
20. Those things have a 2 year warranty. If you bought it new within then I'd have a word with the guys you bought it off. A
21. Thats not a Ric is it Nice though. Good atmosphere and playing to. Interesting drum pattern you've got going there. Mines a 6X
22. Ditto on the hi-jack Nice job btw You do like your chequer don't you Mines got a really nice thumpy sound. (Granted it bares no relation to the original!). What are those pick ups like? A
23. Clean as in no varnish or other coatings. The fit needs to be at least snug with no gaps, better if its a little tight. The tricky bit is finding dowel that's the correct size. You may end up making the holes a bit bigger to suit the dowel. Unless you want to turn a bit of wood down? The wood glue will be fine. It works best if under pressure. That's why you need a good fit. You cant really clamp a dowel insert!! Just make sure if you do machine the hole bigger it doesn't protrude past the machine head nut or back plate. I did this on a neck to convert it from a 4+1 to a 5 inline. I veneered the back face with maple to cover the filling and it blended in quit nicely with the rest of the neck. A
24. I was thinking the very same thing the other day since I have the urge for a new build. Im not a fan at all of the VVT but am of J's. I see you plumped for the Wizards. I am thinking of something a little more complicated in the way of an EMG active set. Only problem there is they come with all the active wiring and its VVT (If anyone knows of a fix to make it a stacked Vol/Blend and two tones Id be interested but back to the OT. Its pretty straight forward if its a J set as far as volume is concerned but I think the P can over power the J in a PJ set making the mid point on a blend a bit imaterial. Unless you have discussed this with Andy at Wizard. Ill be watching this with interest
