Wizard 64s!

Reading Gafbass02's review I just sat there saying yep yep yep yep yep............. Thats exactly how they are for me in my bitza fretless. (See avatar) Nicely put. A
3. It fits!!! I like the knobs as they are - the old skool with ali plate. Carefull with that drill now Eugene A
4.
Any idea when the next S/W bash is gonna be?
Why the urgency? Anyone would think you've got something to show off! A
5. This post cannot be displayed because it is in a forum which requires at least 1 post to view.
6. How about fourstring with the pickup of your choice BUT put a 5 string pickup in instead. So strings are between the poles. Makes for a warmer sound so rumour has it! Meh! who are we kiddin, your going to have a P made arent you. So what you going to call it? How about "JUDAS". A (Still alive BTW)
7.
Ahah! the penny drops, I suppose another reason for the custom pickups was that Wizard don't do 5's.
Exactly Hence me having to buy a set of empty bobbins and send them to him. He wouldnt make up a 5er set. He would only wind an existing as if it were a repair. I think they may be the only set in existence! A
8.
CH Guitars do them too (I have a couple) http://www.ebay.co.u...=item642495fccd
I think the only reason I got mine from Canada was because CH didnt do the 5 string version. And yes you do, Ive seen one A
9.
I recognise that bridge! I have one in black from Canada. The piezo element on the D is not quite seated properly which is a pain cos it is quieter than the rest. Did you have any problems? Thanks
Nope its a very good quality piezo for the money. Exellent sound out of it. All very equal output from each saddle. Not too sensitive or feedbacky. Only the intonation screw sheering which is a pain. A
10.
having tried this bass i have to admit it's good despite having too many strings and active circuitry. Some questions: I take it that Wizard 74's are half way between 64's and 84's? Why did you go for that type of pickup? Did they charge you much extra for them? I'm thinking of putting some 64's in my new fretless.
I remember it well Dom I also seem to remember commenting that you had the same piezo bridge as discussed above on one of your bitsa's only it was black and 4 string. Yes the 74's are half way between the hot 84's and trad 64's. I got them because I already had the other two types. 64's in Ani the fretless BRG Jazz that I had with me on the day if you remember and 84's in a stock VM jazz. With hinesight I think I would put 64's in this one too. The 74;s dont really sound that good. Now it may be my building or the bespoke U Retro (No prizes for what my money is on) but they sound dull but also way too hot compared to the 84's. Its odd. They remind me of a G&L style pickup. All a bit OTT. While the 84's in the fretted VM sound lovely. Not OTT at all. If you want a set for a fretless definatly go 64's and traditional. They are very nice pickups indeed. Hot and fretless dont go together for me. Also Andy (Wizard) isnt too keen to do bespoke jobs these days as far as Im aware. 74's are not standard (He doesnt even call them 74's I think its a BC thing ) so you have to ask him to make them. I had to order some blank bobbins from the US and send them to him to be wound. He charged about £35 each I think. He is quick when he does do them though
11.
I tried calling him and realised I no longer have his # so this could take a while.
Have you tried guessing it? I mean how many permutations can there be? Ill start you off................... 0 A EDIT: They are quit common on Ebay............... http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_trksid=p3984.m570.l1313&_nkw=bass+bridge+piezo+5&_sacat=0&_from=R40
12. How very out of character So the proletariat 'I like a good honest bass, no fancy woods, the working mans bass and Ill do it all myself with honest blood sweat and tears' guy has turned into the 'I say my man knock me up a bass as I wish will you theres a good fella Ill be back in a week so jump to it'. Dodgey one with the SBK logo but it could work. You might have to explain it quit alot through gritted teeth if it does go pear shaped with the band. Your call! I pondered Cherry a while back and yes it does 'look' heavy! I know what you mean but it isnt and as Dom in Somerset says its quit soft so an oil finish isnt the best thing for it. Looks very nice though. A very good grade of Ash might be a good call since it will have a good texture and grain but nothing too OTT. If you get your 'bitch' to contour the top slightly from side to side you will get a nice wave figure. Headstock - how about a reverse Ray? Hmmm maybe not. Or a subtle 'double fin' Ray style, a bit like the Ryder? Pickups - Well if you want something thats nothing like what youve got already (and lets face it - theres not many configurations you havent got!!) how about just a piezo? It will be a very clean uncoloured sound that you can then colour with your pre and amp and with your newfound fetish for pedals you can have a field day knowing that your not trying to alter an already coloured signal. Just a few thoughts for you to ponder over a brandy and cigar in the Library. A
13.
You know Bob I'm not sure there is, I thought I would try the Stagg then upgrade if I could play it but the only ones worth going to for me are a lot more cash like the Yamaha Silent basses, There may be some more obscure ones I dont know of but just trying them to play before buying to compare is a challenge! Get a Stagg and do the mods and you wont be dissapointed If you go for Spirocore strings or similar you are up to £450 anyway, add a bow at £100 and a few other bits and its adding up, a nice bass with crap strings is not going to be better than a cheaper one with good strings from what I have learnt so far.
Very true. I think the next logical upgrade would be the piezo. Just a guess but Im sure that would push the Stagg up a league. If I was Stagg Id consider marketing an up market EUB with better attention to QC and upgraded components. Theres probably a market for it. A
14.
Singer has a job already, and so do I... although this morning I'm a bit of a slow starter (making up for last night staying late ) Do give us a call still, you can sing with us via mobile phone next time he lets us down Hmmm... holograms. That's an idea...
Good luck and have a blast tomorrow night J. We'll have to have a catch up at the weekend one evening if your free for a chat? A
15. Really like it Dom The [s]maple[/s] Boxwood fingerboard is lovely and the black hardware and strings is a perfect match. Doesnt detract from the wood. Are those strings those black taped round wound thingy Fender ones? Sooooo a few duff notes at the dusty end!! Any particular reason why?? A
16.
That bridge looks like a slightly refined version of the one created by a friend (John Drake) who I believe sold them to Overwater at one time. Any idea where the bridge is manufactured? P.S. That isn't even close to genuine snotburst. I will get my camera out and post a piccy of my snotburst (bogey green through mucus cream) dano baritone when I get time.
Thats very interesting about the bridge. Its actually a cheapo of ebay but came all the way from Canada!! One of the intonation screws decided to sheer off a while ago and the thread is not the same as a standard bridge. Its slightly larger in dia. Dont suppose your mate John would have a spare lying around would he? Oh and I know its not a real snotburst. Just my take on it with a couple of rattle cans I was deliberatly not going to go too green since I already have a green (GRB) one. But pics of the real thing are always welcome A
17. Been looking forward the end results to. Beautiful and yes it does look like a deep sea forest lol. Nice one Rumble............... enjoy A
18. Oh thats unfortunate - I was going to give you a call tonight and do a telephone audition! Its good news though but the first thing I did think when I read this was - 'He's got a job!!! ' A
19. To me the point of building a bitsa bass is you get exactly what you want and is pretty much unique. Yes you can buy a VM Jazz for alot less than the individual parts but taking what Ive just said into account you get what you want, have fun doing it, learn alot and have something that is 'you'. The fact that what you have is not worth the sum of the parts in the S/H market is negated by all this. If you MUST sell it then just take it to bits and sell them. There is the point that very very few basses in the short term actually appreciate anyway so if you did sell your shiny new VM Jazz you can knock £100 off straight away. Its a hobby after all isnt it? Go gather your logs and wires and grow your own man A EDIT: The only big thing you really need to watch is that the neck will fit the socket if they are bought seperately.
20. Baritone? That red, black, natural does look pretty cool actually! A
21. im sure it will be fine. Im probably splitting airs anyway.
22. I was just thinking that knots are a harder wood than regular grain and would possibly cause a change in tone at that point. Then again it might not. Just a thought A
23.
he is right, you know?
They also came with signature Cases and case candy which will add to the collectability if all original and complete. Need I go on? A
24. You need a bass that ticks the following boxes............. 1. Cheap initial cost to maximise your return. 2. Popular at the time to maximise the recognition and nostagia. 3. No longer available new. 4. Subsiquently go out of fashion and therefore discarded / destroyed / modded to create rarity. Seriously this is a no brainer. There is only one to have.............. A Sue Ryder RP-1 A
