1. Looking for suggestions for my practice routine on my double bass. Done major and minor arps to the point of boredom. Also doing the blues scales. Thinking along the lines of useful chord tones eg major/minor 7th or what. Trying to find a band but unsuccessful so far so need to expand my practice regime...got a book on walking bass but find it hard going.
2. Interested if Mr Bamboscha is not. Would need to ship Jimmy
3. I was thinking along the lines of putting in an EUB and an ebass or 2 inputs fothe EUB (piezo and mic) etc. Maybe should be thinking small mixer and into the Genz?
4. Which high end amps have 2 inputs. Looking at Genz
5. The bass player has to work with rhythm as well as harmony and dynamics and communication and sound etc. The story (true or false!!)about John Paul Jones explaining to Jimmy Page about the difference between a third and a minor third (or something like that)sums it up for me. JPJ was initially the more advanced musician in that band having established himself as a musician before he was a great bassist.
6. https://soundcloud.com/jimmy-ho-ho never finish things....too many mistakes but I get to the point where the damn thing has to get off my desk before it drives me to scrap it....am I a bad person or just an impatient twat...also struggle with middle eights.
7. Yes...think I will go back to round. I am using EB Group III flats. The reason being that I had a 78 Ric 4001 strung with D Addario tapewound (think that they were expensive but worth it) and I loved the playability of them so when the tension thing happened ( strings were all over the place as if the neck was twisting)..I decided to go for flats and someone recommended the EBs. Don't find them as playable as the tapewound and the sound is dull on the SUB. Can't remember which roundwounds nor the guage I had on previously. I have used Elixir for years on my guitar so maybe it was them. Must admit that I do like tight strings but don't think that this bass can take em. Only vaguely considering a new amp...will go through the string thing first. I am totally baffled by string makes, materials, tensions and guages. Must educate myself. Much easier 15 years ago. The worst (and best) thing that has happened to modern life is ...CHOICE...it used to be take this or foff...now you get a list of 45 different things to choose from in the most banal daily routines like having a cup of coffee. Apols for the rant..thanks for the input
8. Playing a MM SUB through a Fishman Plat Pro into a Roland 100 Cube. Recently started rehearsing with a band and I hate the sound!! I used to love the DI ed recorded sound of this bass but I changed to EB flats from rounds as there was a string tension issue. I use the Fishman with my EUB and thought it would help but it killed the sound. Think that it may be the strings but trying out strings is a costly business. Vaguely considering a new amp but need something that will suit both ebass and EUB and have 2 inputs.

10. Only recently started reading bass. I play sax as well and have no problem reading for that although I have not learned all the improvising scales...only those mainly used by bands...A, C, D, E G...the bass clef kinda annoys me as I still find myself transposing to treble in my head. I think it is useful (and for me enjoyable)to learn music theory...I did 5th grade but it is not necc. Lots of folk play using ear and chord patterns/tones....eg Pino. Comes in useful when you want to note something down or remember it and certainly using Sibelius or other writing programs is more fun (if you like that kinda fun). I think that for bass the most important part of theory is harmony and using it to find interesting notes that influence the overall sound.
11. One of my heroes in every way. Was amazed to find out that she was a heavy smoker...so much for that myth. Love Larry Kleins production my favourite album has to be Turbulent Indigo...Wayne Shorters sop sax was sent from a special place
12. Scales are very useful to understand music....as long as you don't play them live
13. Played a famous place in Grangemouth. Won't name it but it is/was near the docks. It was full of hookers. The image of the night was a couple in front of the stage. She was sitting in semi prone position and he was literally pouring beer into her face. Unfortunately it was also dribbling out the bottom end into an expanding puddle on the floor. Was a great gig.
14. Went to an instrument building course and made one. The stuff that I learned was invaluable as a guitarist and got myself a really nice instrument. Tried a guitar and got myself a really expensive bucket of firewood.
15. Been playing EUB (Kania) for a year or so now. Don't have a problem playing pizz or getting slap notes. My problem is reaching between long notes when for example doing the boom boom boom boom fill ins between long notes (eg playing in A upfret). The strings seem to stick to fingers and palm to the back of the neck. Is it because it is an EUB you lose some control when slapping.....lack of stabilising weight that the real thing has? Of course I am still learning and this may resolve with practice but I did notice that some people take the laquer off the neck and oil it. I use Silver Slaps...tried Fast Fret but they still seem sticky...is this just nooby technique or can I oil the strings or what.
16. I did up to grade 8 sax. I do regret it from the point of view that I never intended to play classical sax which is what the grade system teaches. It was good for my reading however. What I would suggest is to get a teacher who can play accompaniment on piano. For my grade exams I had to hire a pianist (who played with once a year). Cost a fortune. I now wish I had chosen a teacher who could have taken me through the stuff that I wanted to play in the first place and studied for the grades as a side issue. It is also extremely stressful BTW to do this as an adult.
17. That is a good price not sure where I would put her though...might be the tipping point for my wife
18. I have one and love it. Have had recent problems with strings...I think that you may have to be careful which strings go on it. I have just ordered EB flats ...not on yet...they say it has the same sound as the real thing
19. I have a Tak EN10. It has a cedar top. This gives it a darker tone than the brighter spruce tops that is often the usual choice. It has a relatively narrow neck. I like it a lot for strumming and it sounds great recorded. It does not cut through a mix very well in an electric band however and isn't the best picked. I would go for a good Yamaha with spruce top or on a budget Tanglewood maybe. Every acoustic guitar is different. Walk down a line and try them all...one may jump out at you and it is not necessarily going to be the most expensive....I have lost my confidence in Martins generally...at the top end I would chose Taylor every time. I also have a top end Fylde (that we won at a raffle) One of the best players ever but not a great sounding instrument....at a price of well over 2k you would expect that.
20.
With EB Flats, the higher the Group number, the lower the tension. IIIs are about normal flats tension for me (eg a little bit more tense than standard gauge round wounds).
So would the Chromes have a higher tension than the EBs? Secondly if I wanted an EB with a similar tension to standard round wounds would that be a II guage? I ask this because I have had problems with my MM SUB strings (in another post). I think that the string tension has been too high.
21. Is there difference in tension between the D Addario Chromes and the EB flats?
22. So which flats have you used and what size. Thinking of putting them on my MM SUB
23. It has been 20 years since I played in bands but I remember that for some reason there was often a long silent break between songs. I have seen this many times. I mean usually we played the same set so there was no reason for it. I think that bands should practice going from one song to the next as if it is part of the whole performance. I think that when this happen there should be some patter. It looks unprofessional when the band are farting about on stage between songs and nothing is happening.
