  1. Thanks for this. Apols.....I was of the impression that the low string was tuned to C..........thinking of getting a 5 string. I'm a tad old fashioned and think that bass ws meant to play low notes. The lower the better......bet that will upset some people lol. I can see that the nut thing could be an issue. Thanks again.
  2. Do all 5 string basses have the capability of taking a low C string or are some designed to use a high note (not sure what it is tuned to, I assume .
  3. Like the look of the A Designs Reddi. Bit pricey. Think that I was bit fast in getting the AxeTrak
  4. Will take this. Could you post to Stirling
  5. What would be a quality DI unit? I have a POD Pro that I sometimes put guitar through. I also have access to enough effects in Sonar. I don't use distortion, just after the perfect straight bass sound. I use a Focusrite Saffire 24. Maybe just have to learn to use it better.
  6. Looking for general pointers on recording bass. I don't have a lot of space so since I only record(don t gig) I was thinking about getting a quality bass head (was thinking Markbass or ?) and recording from the line out. I have been recording several years, using Sonar for the last 2. I have been DI ing. Looking to improve my bass sound although the DI is OK. I have a 78 Ricky 4001 and an MM SUB. I know that many bass line out channels are of poor quality and you get a better mic ed sound but I also have a sound level issue. Have recently bought an AxeTrak for the guitar but am concerned about the quality of that. Would be interested in what other folk do.
  7. Kind of guessed that. Thanks for the reply
  8. Hi Is this amp still available. If so, could we meet in Perth. I live in Stirling. jimmy
  9. Has anyone ever responded to these Ebay ads for EUBs from Chinese sellers? Some off them look poor quality and others I am not sure about. I know that there is some good stuff comes out of China from some of the saxophones that they produce but I suppose, like everything, you have to know the company.
  10. The ampeg looks good. I see that it can be bought new for £300. What about putting guitar through it or is this a no no without a tweeter? Anyone got opinions about DI from the amp V DI straight into the recorder or through an amp modeller. I use a Line 6 pro thinggy with my geetah.
  11. Hi Just got a nice MM SUB through a Basschat member. Looking for an amp/cab or combo. I only record at home and don't gig. Main problem is that I lack space in the studio so it/they have to be as shallow as poss. I do not need power (although I am aware that a bigger amp at number one is better than a smaller amp at 10). I do want quality sound and would like a 15 or bigger speaker/ driver for bottom end. I am a big fan of the old valve/analogue sound. Those are my thoughts. Feel free to tell me that I am talking bollocks etc, that is why I am writing this cos if I knew what I wanted I would not be writing this. Afraid that I only have a budget of around £300. Jimmy
  12. I am and old newbeee. Been playing guitar most of my life. Just took up bass to do some home recording a couple of years ago. As you know recording is a money-eater. I have been putting the bass straight into the recorder (am changing from Akai DPS16 to Focusrite pro computer audio interface). I want better results and was wondering about micing an amp. I don't want the expense of 2 good amps so was thinking about a bass combo that I could play my guitar through as well. I use Tokai strat and a Fernandez (humbuck pups). My bass is a EBMM SUB. Have some pretty good mics.
  13. thanks for all the advice. I got myself an EBMM SUB from this site. Very pretty. Strings are very light but great action and intonation compared to the MIM precision that I have been slogging. thould really get myself a combo amp but I am reluctant to have both a guitar and bass amp. Anything to stop you having a guitar through a bass amp?
  14. Just bought a MM SUB from Casapete. Great bass in perfect nick. Excellent communication. Smooth transaction. highly recommend.
  15. Pete Jimmy Hughes here in Stirling Scotland. Would like to buy your SUB but I'm afraid that you would have to post it. I have a Paypal account or can send a cheque. Jimmy
  16. Would take it but I am in Stirling Scotland.
  17. Yes you are absolutely correct. I went through a few mallets and a few strings before I found a light rubber mallet. I feel slightly embarrassed about it among a bunch of pro slappers (although whatsisname who plays with Peter Gabriel does so on occasion). I really like the tone that comes from the mallet. It is also easier if you have to record for 2 days solid every couple of months. Unfortunately it requires hauzers on the instrument. I thought maybe a short scale bass may help. Looking into the Yam RGX A2. Would like a Stingray but not sure if it is too light.
  18. Would be interested in a look at both these. I am from Stirling but am in Glasgow today until 1200. My mobile is 07982 719713. Jimmy Hughes
  19. Hi Looking for some advice. I am about to buy a bass. I don't play live and due to noise restrictions I record directly into my PC based audio interface (focusrite pro 40). I don't care if the instrument looks like my uncle Deaks' dog, all I need is a good sound. I am actually a guitar/sax player (don't they make theee worst bassists) that plays simple bass to write songs. I have developed a technique that requires the heaviest strings possible on a bass (no slappin or tech stuff). I therefore would like an instrument with a neck like Arnie Swartz that still stays in toon up the frets. I do like the sound of the Yam RGX A2 but not sure if it is up to the job. I assume that the heavier the strings you put on, the more torque you put on the neck? I have a budget of around £500.
