1. Yes I quite like the Realist but it seems to me to miss out quite a lot of the other tones that a full size bass produces and was wondering if it were possible to 'find' these in my instrument somehow with the correct mic and pre amp settings........I know that the obvious answer to this is to...get a proper bass.... but I like a lot about the small body. I also like slap and that seems to be lost on this bass
2. I have a small bodied double bass similar to an Eminence. Want to improve the amplified sound. Have a Realist pup which sounds OK but am trying to combine it with a mic to pick up slap and improve the acoustic sound. Using EA doubler/ Mesa cab/Focusrite(and ART) pre amps. The mic at present is a Sennheiser MD421 but all I get is very low volume and feedback. Maybe it is just not possible to get volume on something that does not produce volume. Also have some good condenser mics but would imagine that they would be worse for feedback and bleed in a live situation. Was thinking clip on mic? (don t have one and know nothing about them). Also thought about using a separate cab for the mic? Would love a Blast Cult bass but that is years away
3. Anyone came across this forum? I found the reg process a right pain in the a--e and then it seems that to get anything out you have to become a paying member.
4. Just turned 60 ....I only sing on recordings and am confident that I could not do it live because of nerves. I can get up to top E ish. What I have noticed however is that getting notes is all about relaxing and manipulating tiny muscles in the upper chest, throat, palate and behind nose area. There are tons of books on it. One good exercise to get the throat open is to drop the jaw, relax tongue and talk like boo boo (yogi bear). I am no expert but I think the high notes are a combination of getting the soft tissues in the palate to vibrate and push that sound into your head area. On the other hand i may be talkin sh--e. I am sure there are good singers on BC who can give advice. It usually takes me a half hour of practice before I even get near relaxed. I play some tenor sax and use some of the breathing exercises to try and improve my singing voice. I don t think I could even consider playing and singin simultaneously.
5. Efficient fast and friendly transaction. ...Could not have gone better....arrived less than 24 hours after payment. Very pleased with the amp.
6. Just missed a thumpinator ....bugger
7. Thanks for all the advice. Am on to it
8. The speaker is cracklin like f--- sorry billio......was Ok until I cranked it up. Had all knobs (including gain) at 12 oclock. I am looking at EA doubler with an EA speaker and don t want to risk it. Will def go for a limiter. I assume that you can have a pedal to switch on and off when I use the DB? Is the SFX Thumpinator the way to go or will it change the sound too much?
9. Totally agree with this. With guitars and to a degree with ebasses you can almost be sure that a fender or a gibson or a gretsch are OK. I would also like a good DB in the future but realise that I may have to invest some time in it as well as cash. I have already decided how much I am going to spend but I firstly have not a clue whether I am getting value for money or being scammed in a cold sale and secondly whether that cash will still be in ma hip when the right bass comes along in 6 months time or a year or whatever. I got a DB from a member here a while back but it is a small bodied and I have GAS for the real thing. Think I am going to have to nail my GAS down and be patient
10.
Most of the "music" that that particular group do is a backing track. I know them too well Steve
Bloody hell. That passed me right by. The sound was very live. Are you sure? They told me they were Spanish and Portuguese but I thought that they were from another place.
11. I think Tony Levin plays with very light sticks attached to his fingers. I use a marimba hammer. It has a light rubber ball at the end of a round stick. You get a powerful sound but it loads the speaker. Takes a bit of practice to get accurate and not break strings. It isn t suitable for everything but I like it for funky rock stuff. I like to use heavy strings. I am sure more skilled players could get a similar sound with slap but I came into bass playing at a late age and never learned that.
12. There is an on board compressor on the Roland. I assume that this is pretty basic. Will have to address this when I get a better amp/speaker
13. Not Timmy but Jimmy.....quite close....what about putting a VU meter before the amp...maybe a pedal ? Does EA stuff include VU meters as standard?
14. I have a Roland 100 cube. I have developed a style of playing some songs using a small rubber mallet. Sounds very rocky funky. My concern is that I have knackered the driver/speaker. Could loading the speaker at high volumes with an aggressive strike cause damage? I am looking for a new rig anyway...one that will take my DB and ebass....something like a Euphonic Audio doubler....while I can afford to wreck my Roland (got it cheap) I dont want to invest in EA stuff and have the same problem.
15. I am definitely not confident with setting up especially with the twin rod on the Rick...it looked like an old english long bow with the 105-50s. I put flats on and the action was perfect. The SUB appeared to twist. Maybe get someone who can set up to look at it. Would like an old precision anyway
16. I like heavy strings but the last couple of basses that I had did not /do not like em....Rick 4001 and MM SUB. Was thinking of getting a precision as I like the sound...will that take heavy strings or should I be looking elsewhere? Don't really understand neck profiles...should I be looking at a certain profile number?
17. A great thread.Ran into a group of travelling buskers yesterday (2 trumpets, guitar, keys and double bass). Bass sounded great. They told me it was 150 years old and was for sale for £1000. Although the bass sounded great it looked like they were travelling with the bass on a chain behind the van. It could have been a bargain or a scam. Suddenly realised that I would not mind a new instrument(have a small bodied contra) but did not know the first thing to look for.
