1. Hello all, Waking Aida's new album, Full Heal, has been out for a while and it's f***ing amazing. If you're into your post-rock and you like mathy weirdness then you need to give these guys a go. Their previous album, Eschaton, is special. But Full Heal is the resulting work of a mature band who have really grown into their style. Parts blissful and majestic, and parts groovy and confusing. Bursting with confidence, strong rhythms and gorgeous melodies; Full Heal is captivating from start to finish and is an album indicative of true masters of their style. The whole album is available to listen to on YouTube, but I'd encourage you to buy it on iTunes or similar!
2. Wow, basses are cheaper through the Yamaha shop! How did I not know this? Could definitely do with another 424x.
3. £4,500?! Buy a nice 5er and then spend a couple of grand on some lessons. You'll end up sounding a lot better. No point spending thousands on an instrument if you can't use it properly. Not saying you can't, of course. Just saying that there's more than one way to skin a cat.
4.
Do you have any back line with these, and if not how do you handle monitoring? Also Yamaha state that the frequency response is 49Hz-20kHz @ -10dB and this handles the bass guitar fine?
Only thing that should go lower than 100hz is the bass drum so yeah it'll handle it fine. For a good mix you'd be looking to cut the bass guitar at about 100hz anyway. My band have a weak backline. Guitarist uses a 15w 10" combo, I use a 100w 1x12 combo. We use our PA just to spread the sound and throw it to the back of the room. We don't actually go much louder than our backline does. We're not a loud band, we just want a nice balanced sound that's loud enough for pubs, private parties and clubs. Which is why we're happy with our SRM450's and single sub.
5. Hello, Putting together a metal band with a long time guitarist mate of mine. Nothing serious, just want to make some noise. Get together every couple of weeks and jam. We have a free rehearsal space in Hemel Hempstead that we can use on Sundays. Probably be quite modern-sounding. Some Djent, some groove, some hardcore. We like blast beats and plenty of double kick. No singing. All screaming, all the time. Get in touch if you like the sound of it!
6. Yamaha RBXJM2 is a great bass for prog. Flexible as hell, tonnes of mids, sw***y looks and 6 strings. Can be had for £350 s/h. Failing that, Peavey Grind.
7. I also run a pair of Mackie SRM450's and a single Mackie SWA1501 sub for my band (four piece, three vocals). We put the whole band through. 3 mics on the drums, bass DI'd and guitar combo close mic'd. We find that because we get enough throw out of the PA we don't need to worry about the rig not pushing enough volume. We play pubs and it's plenty enough for us. Never had the volume control on the back of the Mackies over halfway! Don't forget to include leads, mics and stands into your budget. I managed to get all the boxes for £850 (including a mixer) but all the other stuff added another £250 on top.
8. The Mark Hoppus Jazz is the best Precision that Fender make I think!
9. Fine, but the thing is is that some people don't really care about music. They're not somehow stupider or are able to form less valid opinions than people that do listen to music. My wife's a very clever person but doesn't listen to anything other than Radio1 and has never purchased music in her life.
10. Why not just buy a different cab? If you botch it up then you've got a worthless cab and possibly a broken amp.
11. Turn the bass almost completely off, leave the mids and treble set mid-way. On the bass, you'll want the tone set to about 75% zing. Tonnes of gain. Sounds counter-intuitive, but play lightly and let the amp do the work. Sounds pretty horrible solo'd but in the band mix it'll cut through like a knife. No need to use effects, just utilise the gain controls.
12. My 100w Fender Rumble combo is well loud enough for pub gigs and rehearsals. I don't understand why anybody buys anything over 200 SS/class D watts anyway.
13. Just leave it. No big deal is it? Just replace the stand and move on. sh*t happens, no-one got hurt and at least she didn't break anything worth hundreds of pounds.
14. Just a modern day Jon Bon Jovi. That is to say frickin' awesome! Not a huge fan and I don't own any Foos albums but I like what I hear on the radio and I think there's 4 or 5 songs that'll last 50 years.
15. Owned three Blazers in my time (basically Ibanez's P range in the early-mid 80's) and they were very well built, great sounding basses. Solid brass bridges, hot wound pups and alder bodies. What more do you need? 80's Ibanez made their instruments really well; proper truss rods, good quality machine heads and, in my cases, shielded cavities. Good instruments altogether and tone wise, very similar to the Fenders of the time. Not quite Roadstars, but I'm just trying to give you an indication of the quality level that their instruments were at .
16. Fretless Precisions always sound great. I had a bitsa once made from an '83 neck and a no-name body and really liked it. Lovely soft, articulate, expressful tone with a subtle mwah that you o my get from a P pup. I have no doubt that this one would sound even more lovely! I'd gladly have this one if funds allowed and I'd use it every day. A bass this gorgeous deserves to be used!
17. I would only ever buy basses from BC. I've had too many bad experiences with EBay and I'd never buy new because I can get good gear off of BC for less money. I'd have snapped up that Ibanez Doug Wimbish that was up a while ago and I'd have had that Sandberg Electra that was up last week too if I'd had the money spare! Wasn't there a 90's TRB 4 up for around £400 recently? Bargain! Some things are a little keen but it makes the bargains stand out more.
18. Said it before and I'll say it again, Peavey Firebass! Massive in all respects with a tiny price. Can be had for around £100, white face version commands a slightly higher price. Wish I'd never sold mine and I ended up replacing it with a Pro700 (£70!!!!) which is very similar but not quite a Firebass!
19. Honestly can't go wrong with a 424 and flats and they have a great vintage look about them too. Have previously owned a 1024 and didn't really see where the extra money got spent so kept the 424 and released some cash by selling the 1024. The 2024's are on a different planet though. Outstanding instruments by anyone's standards!
20. Hello all, My band are looking for a rehearsal space to rehearse in. West Star in High Wycombe isn't ideal for us because we can't make the 6-9 slot and 9-12 is too late and the other studios I know of are too far away (Farm Factory in Welwyn and Sanctuary in Watford). We'd prefer to share a studio with a band so that we can have the flexibility of hours. Does anybody know of a studio or know of a space that can be shared in the High Wycombe/Aylesbury/Chesham/Beaconsfield area? Would really appreciate any help! Thanks, Alex
21. So he's been told to look at his tone and volume control a few times before and doesn't respect the views of his bandmates? Get rid mate. There's tonnes of great guitarists out there that won't make you nervous every time you gig. Going out and gigging should be fun for everyone. How are you ok with the fact that your keys player has a meltdown in the middle of the gig shouting at the dude telling him to turn down? It's not normal and it's not ok. This guy is ruining the fun for everyone and he needs to go.
22. All good gear and if buy it myself if I had the money, just seems a bit expensive when there's loads of good stuff out there second hand. I got 2xMackie SRM450's, 1xMackie 1501 sub, all cables, Samson L1200 mixer, 3x Samson Q7's and all stands for just over a grand. I know it's nice to have new stuff, but is it going to get you more work? Will you rent the gear out to other bands? Will you do party DJ'ing too? If you're doing all those things then yeah maybe it's worth it.
23.
Oh man this is my ultimate bass. I'm about £1300 short though. Perfect colour too. GLWTS
+1
24.
I know property prices are ridiculous in London right now but living in a flightcase seems a bit extreme...
Oh dear
