1. Prices don't seem lower than anywhere else.
2. I use this forum software myself and have just done the same update. You will find that the notification settings in your profile will have changed and you're probably not receiving your original notifications - just go into your profile settings and update them accordingly. There are a lot more settings than there were previously.
3. I think that cream covers are OK but not when everything else is black. IMHO
4. I've just made the same change on my Fretless Jazz Bass. IMO the white scratchplates look very cheap on the sunburst finish.
5. Can't fault your thinking at all. Better to make that decision now rather than in a few weeks when you've really got brassed off with it.
6. Bought a Fender Precision from Steve, everything about the deal was faultless.
7.
In all fairness to our guitarist colleagues, I did once meet a lead guitarist who tried to be co-operative rather than "look at me, look at me". He's in Broadmoor now, of course.
8. I went to the Penrith Guitar Show a couple of weeks ago and sat in on a lecture by a guitarist who's name I forget (which is a shame as he was very good). The tongue-in-cheek name of the lecture was "It's All About the Solo" and was about making the solo fit the song rather than just being a showcase for the lead guitarist's undoubted talent/fast licks/posing ability etc. This got me thinking about the different mind set of bass players vs guitarists. I find that when I play in a band my ultimate aim is to get the band sounding it's best and therefore I try and get my tone and levels to fit in with the overall performance. Most (but not all) guitarists that I've played in bands with tend to only want to hear themselves, generally to the detriment of the rest of the band and consequently, the overall sound. I know that this is a bit of a generalisation as I know that not all guitarists are like this and the guy giving the lecture described most guitarists as "knobs" in this respect. He did however, describe himself as an "ex-knob". Does anyone else find this with their guitarists or am I just unlucky?
9. I think it's a great idea but it could be improved IMHO very easily. Make the diagram more like the average bass neck by missing out most of the fret numbers and highlighting the "dotted" frets ie 5th, 7th, 9th, 12th, 15th etc.
10.
I've found everytime I email GuitarGuitar they never budge on prices, not even matching Soundslive right near the Newcastle store.
I've had this experience with Guitar Guitar in Newcastle, on the telephone. The upshot was that I bought my Geddy Lee Jazz Bass from Sounds Live and I don't even consider Guitar Guitar now, when making a purchase.
11.
And for those of you with a mind to adding other 'improvements' to a ric..... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1977-RICKENBACKE...=item4aae1fb9a9 Well, just don't do it. OK
Whoever did that wants flogging! Regards,
12. Technically I spent £2k on a Rickenbacker 4001V63 but in reality, I part-exed a Rickenbacker 330/12 to get it and I made a handsome profit on the 12-string. If it had come down to forking out £2k in cash it would probably have been a different story.
13. Now, if you were to buy some bubblewrap and brown tape, and package the whole thing up nicely, you could well have a sale. Regards,
14.
In that condition, I wouldn't go over £850. There are clean examples around. The thing with getting paper under the tailpiece is an issue called tail lift.
£850! I'll have 2 please
15. Fender "Explorer-bird" made by Peter Cook. John Entwistle Bass Gear Regards,
16.
Uh gaod!
Rarely gets as bad as that one which is a very extreme case. Both mine have very slight lift and doesn't affect them in any way.
17. At a guess, somewhere between £1200 and £1400, possibly less. It has aftermarket straplocks on it so these might need replacing with the Schaller type that you can get to fit Rickenbackers without having to fill the threaded hole. It is a buyers market at the moment so I would do some serious haggling.
18.
A slight contradiction perhaps? Know what you mean though. I've played bass for 30 years and only got my first P (well, Squier version) this year! I love it!
Yes, hence this sentence: "This should mean that the good old Fender Precision would be just right for me but I've tried a few of them over the years and found them to be dull and boring" Regards,
19. Hi All, I know that this might sound a bit sacrilegious to some of you but I've never "got" the Fender Precision. I'm a bit of a traditionalist when it comes to basses, I like the "old school" basses, some of the modern pointy things just don't hit the mark. The closest I ever came to a "pointy bass" was the original Aria SB1000 (s/n 000184) but I didn't keep it for long. This should mean that the good old Fender Precision would be just right for me but I've tried a few of them over the years and found them to be dull and boring, I like 2 pickups. Last week, I was browsing the Basschat Marketplace and saw a MIJ Fender Precision Fotoflame which was being offered for sale by Shonks. I really did like the look of this bass so I bought it and it landed with me on Tuesday of this week. Very nice bass, raised the action a touch - perfect. Gigged it Friday night and last night. Well, what can I say? It might be a one sound bass (OK, I know what the tone control does), but that sound just fit in perfectly. I'm currently gigging with a glam rock band (the photo might have given that away) and the Precision cut through the mix with a very satifying tone. There was a bit of a "honk" to the sound, it was great, even though I was using my amps and pedals that were set up for my Rickenbacker 4001. Am I going to ditch my Rickenbackers and Fender Jazzes? No, not a prayer but Leo Fender definitely got it right. I finally understand what I've been reading about Precision basses for the last 30 odd years! Maybe now I should try some more pointy basses although I need another bass like I need a hole in the head - apart from a nice fretless that is! Regards,
20. I too replaced the white scratchplate with a black one and it does look much classier. It is a Jazz bass with a thinner neck but it does have a certain kudos. It's on a par with my MIJ Jazz bass.
21. Just received this bass from Steve, what a gorgeous instrument, one of the nicest Precisions that I have ever seen. A few adjustments to make and it will be gigging on Friday and Saturday this week. If you ever need to deal with Steve I can say that you can do so without hesitation, no problems with the sale or communication, everything done as you would expect. Regards,
22. Have you noticed that EVERY guitarist thinks that he can play bass... and most of them can't!
23. Amplification is a major factor in obtaining "the" Rickenbacker sound, valve amps do it so much better as the sound is slightly overdriven. The Tech 21 VT Bass pedal does a good job of nailing this sound. The positions of the tone controls on the Rick itself are also major factors and you do have to play pretty hard.
24. Did the control cavity of this bass have to be modified to accept the active electronics? Regards, Graham.
25. On the odd occasion I get approached by Rickenbacker fans, nobody comments when I play my Fenders.
