That is a good call there DrT, a Jazz has the highs for that kind of material and can easily be backed off to get a nearly there Precision tone.
-
Same, I’d only stick to my guns on songs I didn’t like if the audience didn’t like them either.

The Wal that’s in the Band Aid video… up for sale…

Nah, just an over-tall singer 🤣 -
They do seem to have issues with their gear, I have the SCR-DI pedal (great bit of kit) but once the power dwindles a bit a high pitched squeal comes from it. As such I’d only use it on a gig with either a brand new battery or a PSU - and in some venues finding a spare power socket for PSUs can be a challenge. Shame that such a well known and loved brand seems beset by reliability issues.

Yes, can’t go wrong with a Precision of some sorts, can fit into most music styles.
-
My advice would be to firstly think of the bassists whose sound you like. If it turns out they all use the same type of bass then getting something similar will be helpful. Secondly having said that a visit if possible to a good music shop and letting your hands find your bass will also be helpful. A lot of metal nowadays goes very low so a 5 string could be a good place to start, rather than possibly having to make the switch at a later date.

It’s probably only one song as well…….

More that I play gigs - or used to - with very clumsy band members. Plus some of those gigs could be a bit boisterous to say the least, so the fewer items that could be permanently broken the better. Should add, in one of my bands we had to all get wireless kits, not for the posing but that regularly amps would topple where Mr Clumsy1 wouldn’t realise he’d got tangled up in everyone’s leads. I seem to always end up in bands with the clumsiest of fools.

Just watching their set now, Cass certainly has a nice looking rig, even has his name on his pickups!

Maybe that was Markbass’s recent announcement……

Aside from when we toured and I had it in a flight case in the back of the van I just used a Roq Solid cover when it was in the boot/load space of a car. Never any problems as they’re heavy enough to stop them rolling around.
-
With absolutely no sarcasm at all, that’s one of the main factors in my bass purchases.

Congrats on the new amp Clarky, as others have said push the input gain and don’t be wary of making what look like huge adjustments on the eq. I find that the core sound of the ABMs is quite flat and non-awe-inspiring, but making big adjustments really opens it up and lets it be shaped nicely.

What would be your bass gig of choice from all of history?

Crap Sound at Gigs or Perfect Mix for Whom?
Lozz196 replied to Chienmortbb's topic in General Discussion
Couple of good posts there @Buddster -
If not looking for the Ashdown tone then I’d be looking at the frequencies on the ABM eq that are used, then see which other amps have those, so that you can get your sound easily.

Crap Sound at Gigs or Perfect Mix for Whom?
Lozz196 replied to Chienmortbb's topic in General Discussion
Reminds me of a gig I did a few years back, the kick drum for the band before us was a big pillowy reverberating mess so I said to the sound man that our kick drum sound was sharp & snappy so could he make sure this came across. His reply was that “he knew the room”. My reply was “well if you do why are you ruining that bands gig then”. I thought it was a valid question. -
I really wish I could do that, one bass/amp/pedal (if needed). But I know myself too well. Whatever happens I’d always have a backup bass whilst still gigging.
-
Not a particular fan but they do have a few songs which I really like. Given the recommendations above I think it best if I do a re check on them.

Sadly Mensi passed away due to COVID. Although I wasn’t a real fan of the band they were very good live, and despite his somewhat fearsome reputation he had a really dry wit on stage.
