1. It's a no for me. Used to use a zoom for amp modelling plus some crazy distortion/octave for a Muse number, but now it's just back to basics: bass>amp>cab!
2. I used to go direct into the pa in my old band. Took a feed into the line in of a 100w combo which was placed next to the drummer. With the bleed-back from the pa it gave a good enough on-stage sound. FOH sounded very good, but we had a decent pa with two subs. I wouldn't even attempt it without at least one sub. Can't say i'm much of a fan of in ear monitoring as you don't feel the music as well, but everyone would have to have them for reasons already covered. They would probably cost more than a decent sub and a combo/monitor anyway depending on how many there are in you band.
3.
I was thinking of getting a BF super 12, but at the moment, use GB 9.0 Streamliner/Bergantino HD210, have just bought a Roscoe C S4 (was a PB man) and the sound difference is unbelievable! Your point about 'guitar' has started me thiking!!
Ooh, nice! Perhaps the Streamliner likes J-style pups? My S12T replaced an EBS 1x15 with a tweeter. The EBS is a great cab, but the Barefaced fills the room better and moves a whole lot more air - you really feel it as well as hearing it. I kept looking round expecting to see a big stack behind me! On top of that it's a better shape and a lot less weight.
4.
So? Did it all work out well? GB and Barefaced?
Well, it did for me, at least! I'm wondering, though, whether the problem some people are having with the low-end depends on the instrument used as someone has already suggested. The limited EQ bands available might not suit certain guitars for producing a certain sound, perhaps. Personally, I'm not finding the bass uncontrollable or unfocussed in any way at all. With the bass at 12 o'clock it sits perfectly in the mix in our band, and my band-mates agree wholeheartedly. The Streamliner/S12T combination has exceeded expectations and given me that sound and feel that previously only existed in my head. For me it's absolute perfection, but maybe it's just a matter of personal taste - let's face it, life as a bass player would be pretty dull if there was only one bass, one amp and one cab that were the solution for everyone.
5.
Minotaur.
+1 Very good quality and lots of choice.
6. I usually get this sort of thing from studiospares.com. Good range from cheap through to good studio stands. Worth a look, and in my experience even their own brand budget stands are ok - probably better than some stuff I've seen at twice the price.
7.
Have a look at Minotaur. I clicked on an ad at the bottom the page here and they've got some lovely looking stuff between 25-42 Euros.
+1 for Minataur. Got one for Christmas and it's great quality. Good, supple leather, quality stitching, some nice embossing and comfy padding.
8.
You'd think so, but since I got a Super 15, I've bought two Copacts (for same tone but bus luggable) and then a Vintage (because more is more) and keep considering a Dubster. Now my rig is two Barefaced 2x15s.
I don't actually know Mr F, other than reading his posts on here. However, I now have a pretty accurate picture in my mind's eye - looks like a Bond villan, lives in a secret lair built into a mountain and is looking to hold the world to ransom with his sonic destructor ray!
9. Worked quite well for me, but as already said, it needs to be a decent PA with subs. I used a 100w Ashdown combo as a stage monitor, which was fed into the line in from the desk. Cheap as you like (there's one in the for sale section for £75).
10. Fingers! Keep your nails to the right length and with a change of attack angle you can go from a finger sound to a pick sound (but with balls!). Learnt this from my Uncle Geddy
11. I can't recommend the Streamliner highly enough. Fantastic rich tone, very punchy and articulate. My band-mates were massively impressed and the singer/guitarist remarked that it was the best the band had ever sounded. Sits in the mix so well.
12. Ready to be shipped now, but as I'm going to be away over Christmas I have asked Alex to hold dispatch until after the break. My wait time was at the back-end of the 8-10 weeks quoted, but then delayed a little more because of the trouble he had getting the drivers in. I'm expecting the Streamliner to be amazing with the S12T - tried my newly-acquired STL-900 with my EBS cab at rehearsals last night and it was just fantastic! I was expecting the big bottom-end, but the whole thing sounds so musical, with a brilliantly articulate treble that really sings! Hope your cab comes soon and that you enjoy the Streamliner as much as I do!
13. Unfortunately my drivers are in the delayed consignment that Alex was expecting to turn up by now, so looking at next week hopefully!
14. What really turned me onto bass was when I first heard a track from Farewell to Kings on the radio. I rushed out (forgive the pun) and bought the album the same day. From then on, I really found myself listening to the bass on everything. However, what actually inspired me to take up the instrument was going along with a friend to see his colleague's originals band who really blew me away. That was the moment I realised that mere mortals could do this music thing too. Thanks Jack! Of course, years later it dawned on me that us bassists are not, in fact, mere mortals, but gods among men!
15. Personally, I think the theory behind it makes sense, but that's as far as it goes as I'm no expert. If there are even small changes in the speaker, I would expect a larger change to be heard in a cab, and the better the cab design, the more the perceived change. But that's just in my humble and uninformed opinion. I intend to break in my new cab because what will it cost me? Download a sine wave - free; plug in my gear - free; run it while I'm out at work - free. So just a few minutes of my time in real terms. Less than reading this thread, that's for sure! What will it cost me if I don't break in my cab? Potentially a cab that, at least for a while, won't sound as good as it should, and based on that, possibly also a bit of buyers' remorse. I'm all for open debate on these things, and find hearing both sides interesting, but what has annoyed me slightly about this thread is that some parts of it are not in the normal excellent spirit of this forum. I think it's a bit unfair to accuse Bill, Alex or Mr Baer of trying to push their products, since none of them, to my knowledge, is offering a break-in service or selling sine-waves/test equipment. They are merely giving their opinion on what they believe will benefit us if we invest in new gear. If break-in is just 'snake oil', no-one is hurt and no-one loses out. Although, as I am writing this, I notice that some amusingly flippant replies are coming in, so perhaps normal good-spirited banter has returned!
16. Just paid the balance on my Super 12T Vintage! It's how many sleeps to Barefaced that I'm excited about
17. Well, on an otherwise rubbish day you made me smile, at least! Thank you
18. I used to play in a pub rock/indie covers band where everything was through a decent FOH. We had Mackie SRM350s as stage monitors, but bass through them was a no-go. I used an Ashdown FiveFifteen (the combo version) sat beside the drummer and fed from the desk into the line in. Volume was adjusted from the desk. Rated at 100w it handled stage monitoring pretty well, even on the larger stages, but didn't interfer with the FOH sound at all. I would say you probably need something capable of at least keeping up at a rehearsal to make sure you have enough power. You don't need anything that goes too low as the subs will handle that and bleed back reasonably well. That means you can get away with a pretty compact unit. Although I have never used one myself, I would guess that if anything, the Kickback would be a better option than the combo I used. Worked pretty well for us.
19. Just wait until Mr Claber delivers my new cab - I'll have audiences crapping themselves! That should make us more popular!!!
20. I've got an abm mini 1x15 lying around. Never got around to putting on the for sales section. If you prefer to stick with your Plan A, feel free to drop me a pm and I can dig it out and send you some pictures.
21. Not too far Paul - I'm in Southminster. Mrs Thebass isn't too well at the moment, but if I can wangle it, it would be great to pop out and meet a fellow BCer. Thanks so much for your kind offer!
22. Great to hear you're pleased with the new rig! The Streamliner is on my shortlist - it really does sound an amazing piece of kit, but I'm a bit out of the way here to audition one (in any case, I find I can never really tell exactly how I feel about an amp or cab until I hear it in the mix at gig/rehearsal volume). Might just have to take a leap of faith as I did with the S12T that I have on order!
23. Thought it might be - its a bit of a rare pot to need! Seems odd to me that Aguilar don't offer a stacked pot option like they do on the OBP2. I got one to fit an OBP1 to my Status Energy. Not completed it yet, though, as I had a problem with the volume pot. I doubt the centre-detent will bother you much as the boost on the OBP1 goes so high you probably won't get to half way!
24. Ooh, I do love a bit of quilted maple. Very, very nice! Congratulations
25. Just to confirm, the one I posted does indeed have centre detent. Hope that helps
