1. I think Tommy Cooper took it a bit too far?
2.
Ehh? Surely if the BD is loud enough for any room, then its loud enough. You seem to be suggesting that micing it up will make it quieter????? Surely if its loud enough to be heard in the room, any eq you add to it will not overpower the acoustic sound out front, so will be a waste of time. Just saying.
See my post about using a smaller/quieter kick drum, the rest of the band can then use smaller back line too, generally I've found the larger the stage the quieter it is.
3.
My complaint is that this trend has been adopted by pub bands. You end up paying far more for a PA that used to just have to handle vocal requirements because the kick drum's got to be amplified.
We've got our kick mic'd but it does the exact opposite of what you think, it's compressed and gated so it actually has less swampy noises going on, it then allows for a smaller and quieter kick drum on stage, the only thing the audience hears is the tight thump distributed evenly around the room.
4. Replace the word drummer with bassist and I still agree but there's a huge proportion of people here that want exactly that!
5. Do we know for certain it's the sound crew causing this? How often do we see members here declaring they they will only perform with 'their sound', no pre eq di or no di at all regardless of whether the sound they are giving the desk is of any use or not, are drummers demanding a foh to match their on stage sound as many folk here say they do with bass rigs?
6. I was in Croyde years ago and there was a great country/blues band playing in the busy pub in the village, lovely thump coming from the band I couldn't see, when I eventually got sight of them on my way to the gents I could see a Stingray, it wasn't what I was expecting but it sounded bang on.
7.
It depends, doesn't it? I've certainly developed a lot when playing in bands with people who are better musicians than me, sort of on the job learning. But I've also been in bands with people who are stuck at their level. Not necessarily a bad thing, but the bands dis somewhat level down rather than up. No matter how good the lead guitarist is, if the rhythm guitarist can't get the backing chords right behind the solo then (without wanting to get into another debate about what the audience notices) that's the level you're stuck at. I'm pretty much with Happy Jack here. the best bands I've been in from a personal and professional point of view, are the ones where we were the closest mates, and all played to the relevant musical standard required (and for one in particular it wasn't the highest musical standard, but it was appropriate for the gigs and the audience we were getting)
Lots of bands have done well with mixed abilities, look at oasis! I could have said U2 but I didn't
8.
Wikipedia is you friend in this instance: https://en.wikipedia...i/Post-hardcore http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=06GOu9JjHDM
I like it Punk then.
9. I don't even know what 'post hardcore' is?
10. Most of the damage on my instruments I've done myself and at home!
11.
The whole band must also be musically compatible, at (roughly) the same skill and experience level, with matching degrees of grooviness or rockiness or whatever is needed for that band.
I'm not sure I agree with this part, I've been in lots of bands with vastly different abilities over the years, some have worked out ok and some haven't but never really due to the skill levels.
12. Why is it presumed anyone in a covers band can only play covers?
13. Well you're about there!
14. Ah I see.
15.
Only when theres no IEM option available to me!
You don't need the whole mountain of them though!
16. Why would you even fit the 'wrong' tuner?
17. Looking at the posts in the cover band bass tone thread I hope he's managed to get the bass sounds exact for each track!
18.
WOW!!
Add much as I slag them off they are still great looking basses wow indeed.
19. That's not really my point. My function band has one guitarist, one male drummer/singer,one bassist and one female singer, should we restrict ourselves to only play songs that fit that line-up? Having the exact bass sound is miles down the list imo, suitable and decent bass sound where possible obviously but even that's subjective.
20. Running a pub tends to attract a certain element of society, basically the ones with no home or qualifications so it fills both criteria until they realise it is not the same as 'going to the pub' that they have been so good at previously!
21. Standard internet way of thinking these days, if someone asks if it is vital to do something and lots of people say no, those that do whatever it is take that as they are in the wrong. Is it vital? No, is it wrong for those that do? No.
22. Playing originals in a party/function gig environment is no different to playing unknown songs by well known artists, they might be great songs but they'll fall flat on their faces. Once I'd come to terms with the fact fame and fortune as a musician wasn't going to happen it became a choice of gigging known songs to an audience that were enjoying it or playing mainly to half empty rooms full of younger people wondering why anyone over the age of 25 would try and write a song, lol.
23. https://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=http://www.genzbenz.com/img/manuals/gb/SHUTTLE3_manual.pdf&ved=0ahUKEwjQqeOU3brVAhUKYlAKHfGhCC0QFggkMAA&usg=AFQjCNHIroLrj94Gvt_vJtMDeA4ZK4g40g So Genz Benz bought out a 300 shuttle nearly ten years ago that's a similar size but could be used worldwide without even a switch to move across, progress eh?
