1.
I almost bought one a while ago, the most comfortable 35" scale 5 string bass that I have ever played.
The 55-94 is a great high end bass that looks more subtle than most coffee table gear, I presume these new ones will be just the same, they have the exact same quarter sawn necks.
2.
It's a 55-02 by a new name, surely?
The 55-02 is the budget version of the usa built 55-94, these new models are the same as a 55-94 but just a more limited range of finishes, other than that they are a £3.5k bass for £2.3k.
3. Fretemiester has an nxt I believe Geoff, much posher than my old stagg I'm really looking forward to the bash.
4. I just paid the Ebay buy it now price and a week later in arrived
5.
No. If I'm brutally honest with myself I wasn't born to be a musician of any kind.
Nor me, I am not a natural at all compared to many players.
6. I started on guitar and was very average, but rather than the failed guitarist we are often known as I think it was because I was drawn to the bass, even when I bought a good guitar at the age of about 15 I still played the Avon SG bass when jamming with my mates, which was a very accurate copy of an SG bass and therfore terrible I find most bass players are frustrated drummers as we have an understanding of what goes where so we can often knock up a shed or two.
7.
I'm loving these lessons. I'm an EUB virgin (I know it's not a real DB, but I can't fit a real one in the house) and the stuff about hand positioning has already made playing so much easier.
I started on the Stagg and still use it live, all of the lessons transfer well to EUB or DB and are still a must for EUB to play it properly, blagging finger per fret will only get you so far then you get tied in a knot! I know, I tried it, Lol.
8. Another good lesson Geoff, it is interesting what you say about not worrying too much on the gig, generally I dont and the audience appear to have enjoyed it so I will continue to try not to get too hung up on that live. I agree about the tuner too, I used a polytune at first which got me in the ballpark but I did find myself looking at it all the time rather than listening! I forget how far I have come from day one but trying to find the first few notes was a challenge at first without it "are they really that far apart?, is the A on the E string really that far up the neck!", Jake will tell you my problem area is still the 5th to 7th notes on each string, I really have to reach for them usually coming up flat for the first minutes practice but I am getting there Thanks again
9. I wish they had made a 9.0 with the same fet only circuit
10. That is a bargain!
11.
Ahhhh! Run! It's the set neck and neck through alliance of doom!!!!! Ok maybe not - but if a neck goes south and it doesn't come off it's asking for trouble. Hopefully it can be repaired - from the picture it appears the unwanted twist is only near the headstock. That bodes well for a repair - you might only need to work with frets 1 - 7 or something.
Ive got nothing against a set neck but it would make either repairing or replacing this one a hell of a lot easier if it could come off! Hmm now im thinking cut the neck off a stick a mighty mite or something on? Very John Entwistle!
12. The classics are really nice, got any pics?
13.
Ah, MTV unplugged, where none of the basses were ever unplugged. The only act I ever saw do it properly was Bjork. If you didn't see her unplugged set go look it up, it's bound to be on Youtube.
I think you are being overly pedantic about it, where do you draw the line, if no one plugged in or used a mic we would not hear them in America! Nirvana used an acoustic bass I think but he plugged it in as it probably had a preamp, does using a Fishman full circle on DB then make it an electric bass?
14.
between songs I centre my treb and bass knobs by turning them full rotation then back a set distance (it's a muscle memory thing now) and plus/minus a touch of either as needed. I tend to go centre most of the time, and I play with pick and fingers. It's an amazing sounding preamp.
Thats it, on a 3 band I can have the bass much higher but the 2 is a bit of an animal isnt it?! I need to get my stock 2 band tested but I dont know where to take it, anyone know? Im not selling but it needs to stay with the classic5 to keep its value. I have played others that all had more oomph, its possibly why it got moved on at first before I swapped it.
15. You could put the grub screws on the knobs facing up so you can use them for reference?
16. Had an ashdown, it failed, dont own one anymore, Genz going strong 6 years on plus spare micro amp in a gig bag
17.
Have you considered using some kind of EQ stomp box that you could switch in when you need to cut treble?
The problem is as yanto says the bass and treble are interactive so sometimes its not a matter of cutting the treble but boosting bass, or cutting bass to add treble etc.
18. Well I pulled my Classic EQ out as I think it might be faulty, I have a john east now which is just like the pre eb 2 band and that is the same essentially as all 2 eq Rays, this is my 3rd 2 band ray now. It is definitely harder to get a 2 band in the live mix but I'd say better than a 3 when you get it right. I start off with bass at just over half or maybe 3/4 with a big enough amp to take it, then I use the treble as a tone pot, reggae-off, fingers-half, pick or fingers country/blues- 1/4 etc. If you are still having trouble cut the bass a bit rather than boosting the treble, over time you will find that you know where the treble should be for your desired sound and amp setup, after that you will get a feel for where the bass can be set to each venue. If I know a venue is crap for live sound I take my ceramic equipped 3 band Ray and put it in series or single coil mode!
19. My credit card balance did not need a modulus thread!
20. Most cheaper six strings I've played in fact all so far have been a bit poop. I'd concentrate on the five, Ibanez SR series are great basses and very light in fact lighter than most p basses I've played, the Ibanez basses I've played have been in the five hundred quid bracket but felt as good as basses for a grand to me.
21. I have a 3.0, a 6.0 and a 9.2 shuttlemax, I think the 3.0 has the best sound! I'd be tempted to put a link in the double bass section too if I was you.
22. How many bass players will be in the audience though?
