Owning and Gigging high end Basses
Having to keep your eye on them the whole time you're at the bar.
I think your average idiot that might try and lift a bass or guitar would take a Fender over a Fodera or a Ritter, etc, A MIM Jazz on a stand nearer the front of the stage would probably be a good safety net?! -
90s sgc nanyo bass collection USA S.U.B stingray (not sure if in budget?) OLP Tony Levin Stingray if one crops up, great bass other than the cheap bendy tort guard Ibanez of some sort, SR505 are a nice bass, im not sure on values/models?
Reviewing a bass is one thing, but actually giving a demo to hear what the bass sounds like is a different kettle of fish altogether. I assumed that this thread was about the latter.
True, the only review that counts is your own really.

I take no notice of the reviewers personal thoughts, its about the facts for me and a clear description of what is on offer, something like the Classic stingray its hard to see that the body is a slab in the ebmm pictures for example, the new US standard Fenders have a urethane finish rather than polyester one etc.
-
Someone like Ed doing a good review is poles apart from some idiot playing a tab terribly recorded with a nokia 3210 though, look how hard it is to grasp Fender models and exactly what you get extra for your cash, often the big corporate websites are full of mistakes regarding finishes, nut widths, scale length, country of origin etc etc.

If you've got it flaunt it?
Some people just like making videos of themselves I guess. If it makes them happy and helps them to escape what could be the monotony of their humdrum life, all power to them. Youtube is a free place... one man's trash and all that...
You are the transvestite slapper and I claim my five pounds!
-
There's even videos of guys unwrapping their basses. I mean, why do we have to see that?
I've got an old lawn mower I bought from a crown green bowling club, I wanted to see if there was any good clips regarding how to tune the engine and adjust the blades etc.....what a weird world I had entered!
-
After much searching that's exactly the conclusion I came to.
-
My mate has a Marleauex Diva, stunning bass with fingerboard from tip to toe, I am ham fisted but have no trouble playing it, well other than my dreadful fretless playing!
-
The problem I had was even though I was happy to drive miles to try them I would not know a good one from a bad one, maybe a bit more now after two years or so from the Stagg, nearly two years since I got my Gedo. I don't know any other players locally that I could have taken with me. Then there are string heights, steel or guts, bows, pickups, eq units, arghh!
Couldn't agree more. The bass whisperer gives reviews exactly like they should be done. He plays nice clean, clear lines , whilst giving a great explanation of each piece of equipment. I could watch his videos all the time. If only!
So far he's cost me Stingray Classic5, three Genz Benz heads and two Genz cabs, one large and one small. Probably planted the idea for a USA Jazz V too, lol. Love him!
A second or two....as long as that ? What annoys me about Youtube reviews, is where the guy is just rambling on, and on, and on. Clearly little or no thought has been put into the thing beforehand with regard to what they're gonna say. There was one I saw the other day that someone had posted on here, where after about 20 seconds i just switched off and came back to this site. It doesn't have to be scripted, just not rambling.
Our own Geoffbassist does the discover double bass lessons on youtube, they are a master class in how to do it, not too flashy or anything but nicely shot from the right place at the right time and right to point but with enough good humour left in, brilliant.

I always look at in comparison to cars, even the best cars for holding value Mini, Vw, audi etc will lose £1500 a year even if you buy one thats already lost the big chunk when brand new. You only live once -
That's no problem, drop me a pm if you are heading to Tofts and if I'm here then you are welcome to call in, from there you could be at my house, try it out, have a coffee and be back at Tofts or going past on your way back to Manchester in an hour. I've never been in Tofts for the fear of a very expensive credit card accident!I presumed I'd need to take the Gedo to them for a proper setup, Jake and Geoff said it's fine as is so I'm happy for now

Tim tofts is not far from me, 15 mins away so 2 birds 1 stone and all that
I like Ed Friedland's demos. He doesn't play the same stuff each time, he seems good at figuring out what sort of approach suits each instrument. The potential downside of that is that he makes everything sound good! Garth Fielding's demos for D'Addario and Ampeg are pretty good too - he's not showing off, just demonstrating a selection of sounds that can be got. I've found that Youtube demos of EUBs are the worst, as only a tiny proportion of them are by people with any double bass technique...
I agree with all of this, Ed has cost me a fortune! And it would be great if a good player compared all the eubs from the stagg right upto the fancy ones with all styles shown.
Another company who seem to be really well regarded are Gedo I'm sure there will be another BC'er raving about these shortly.... I've heard not only are they fantastic basses, but the service & delivery from Gedo are excellent too
Lol, there are a few of us now.
-
I'm only an hour from manchester if you want to try a Gedo, mine is half carved, adjustable bridge, real ebony board and tail and had thomastik spirocore weichs fitted by Gedo from new. Geoff from discover double bass and Jake Newman both members here have given it a thumbs up, I imagine I would need to spend nearer 3k to make a vast improvement and even then my skill level is far below the Gedo and probably always will even though I'm getting better on it. Do you head south much, I'm not too far from junction 14 M6.
-
On a budget I'd go for dead reliable but lack of vocal clarity!
-
Btw I haven't followed that advice either
-
There is a minimal level of bass and amp imo, I could buy both and a good tuner, stand, leads etc for around £1500 or a bit more, after that I'm not sure who is kidding who?
-
Do I win a prize? you can add some extra shielding but I suspect its either the actual pickups but worth checking there is nothing nearby that could be inducing it?
-
Its only ever going to sound as good as the player, I thought we had done 15s are bassy, 10s are toppy years ago? Still its a quiet sunday so why not
I raised the action very very slightly on my bass a few weeks back and found it sounded a hell of a lot better. Note clarity, low end and dynamics were all so much better. although annoying it did mean higher action which I'm not a fan of.
Thats what the pickup height screws are for
