1. Fender making strange business decisions? No can't be right
2. So either spend £850 or hope to drop on another used one going for peanuts lobematt
3. 250 million in debt isn't the best position to be in for buying 'trinkets'?
4. What sort of money are they?
5. Start the set with U2, bit of snow patrol, Coldplay etc and by then no one will be paying you any attention
6. Thin Lizzy without a plectrum is just wrong, lol. I have to keep mine short now for double bass as you stop the note with the end of your finger rather than the flat bit when playing fretless/fretted bass.
7. One thing no one has mentioned is string through body or not, for me the bbot is less of an issue when strung through, that said I'm happy with my Jazz being both high mass and strung through, nice and sturdy without any lateral movement issues due to the little groove, in fact I'd be happy with a bbot if they just added a groove! The tone issue or lack of issue wouldn't sway me one way or the other.
8. And on the other hand I've had a total failure of a BBOT where the saddle collapsed mid song and cheap tuners that wont hold the strings in tune, I have never kept a BBOT on my basses purely for ease of adjustment regardless of the tone it may or may not improve.
9.
For nearly 15 years I remembered my Dynacord combo as being the best amp I ever owned, until I played one a couple of years ago. It was very good but I think my Bergantino's are better. I always move forwards with my gear. The next one has better than the last, or I wouldn't be buying it. I don't do 90 degree turns, so the latest rig is always the best I've owned. Currently Mike Lull PJ 5 ~ Aguilar TH500 ~ Bergantino CN212. I also gig with Lakland, Thunderfunk, Berg AE112 and Barefaced BB2. All excellent pieces of equipment.
I suppose there probably is some rose tinted specs in use but it was only the volume and weight of the combo that made me swap it for my Ashdown rig, I was never fully in love with the Ashdown looking back.
10. Old fenders are like old cars, everyone says they are overpriced tat and I agree, I just wish I'd bought a few 20 years ago when they were cheaper
11.
Clubby neck = good B? Just a suspicion, but how do the thinner necked SR's compare to the fence-posted ones?
The Classic5 has a fairly flat neck imo and my normal SR5s are less clubby than a regular SR4, maybe because they are wider they feel less clubby? TBH as soon as I started to learn double bass a massive proportion of the "I cant play wide necks" "I cant play thin necks" "I cant play high action" comments we see on basschat become a bit questionable!
12. I've always been hunting for my old Peavey TNT-150 black widow combo and 2002 teal Stingray4 tone but with more volume, it's not happened yet.
13. I can't hear the bass rig in my front room when watching a band either mime on a chat show or have it going to the desk via DI and rarely a mic'd cab either The industry has changed imo so there are less industry standards, the studio with a P, Jazz and Stingray in thevstore room for artists to use for recording are long gone in the main aren't they? Laptop and interface or something churned out by Simon Cowell and Co doesn't need these things except for miming where the SVT and 3TSB and tortie Jazz is still king, it's probably the same one used by every band
14. I'm loving the Sabre!
15. Really?, I love it! Lol It wouldn't have put me off without it though in fairness
16. Can't rush these things, lol
17. I can barely play with either! Lol
18. The ebay link is the right ones, mine is a standard French model, I think Jake went for the fancy weave version. The cheap wooden ones like the Antoni aren't much use from what others have said.
19. You want a 3/4 bow for a 3/4 bass but I see no reason why a longer bow would hurt, nothing size wise is set in stone with DB afaik?
20. Quite a few people have the Yita music ones off ebay on here now, I got mine as a recommendation from others on here, Jake Newman tried mine at my first lesson and he promptly bought himself one so they can't be too bad unlike my playing with it! I asked the same question about French or German and the advice was "what does your teacher use?", I find the German one easier to start with (a cheap wooden one that came with my bass) but the French one nicer after I have settled in a bit, the German one is easy to slip into sawing the strings off mode IME. So a vote for a carbon Yita from me and you might get a few others saying the same or at least agreeing to go for carbon unless you are spending a grand or more!
21. Asbestos blanket will give the Ashdown signature tone yet act as a fire safety device then.
22. Just throw an old jumper over your laptop, job done complete with fire hazard?
23. I can hear the BF massive coming!.........Lol
24.
I've had just the opposite run with recent Fender Am. Std. Jazzes, and Precisions. The QC is very good, the sounds are good also. Very well balanced, and hold their intonation solidly. I can't ask for more from a production line bass.
Same here, I love mine, it is just a proper bit of kit and one I dont mind using in anger, I hope in years to come it will tell a tale of my gigging life. I can see my Jazz as a keeper, 5 strings, 3tsb, tort and well made, it would lose a lot if I sold it and I would only want another later as it fits the bill in every band situation so I can see other basses rotating around the Jazz. Classic US made bass with a Spaghetti Fender logo, what is not to like?
