  1. Yes, but you don't have to is the quick answer. On the other hand... What you get with a 13th chord is a whole host of chord tones. Have a look at C13. From root upwards in thirds that's C, E, G, Bb, D, F, A (root, 3rd, 5th, b7th, 9th, 11th, 13th respectively). Yes you can play all the notes of a mixolydian mode over that, but that's not helping much in terms of outlining the harmony as the song plays along, and that's a big part of our job as bass player right? Check out some of the triads you've got in that selection of notes. As well as C major, and C7, which will help you out big time, you've also got for example Bbmaj7 (Bb, D, F, A), Dm (D, F, A), Gm (G, Bb, D) and probably loads more. Chuck in a few of these triads instead of something based on C and you might start hearing some jazz. Or, alternate a couple of triad pairs (Am and Dm for example) and see what happens. To maybe even elicit an approving nod/raised eyebrow from your keyboard player, lets pretend you've got a #11 in there instead of a 11. Then you get to switch between triad pairs C7 and D7 for example or even you've got Bb-D-F#, the triad based on the third mode of the melodic minor scale, which opens doors to all kinds of excitement. (Bilbo will be along any moment to correct me on this paragraph) Remember there are no bad notes, just bad resolutions.
  2. This is my go-to resource when working out what does and doesn't work in walking bass.
  3. Your strap is twisted. Whichever way you turn it first to untwist it will be the wrong way.
  4. Can't remember the original question, but get some Richard Sinclair in as well. Incidentally, many of these prog bassists - eg Squire, Wetton, Sinclair, others = all have a chorister/church-based musical beginning. There's the origins of your contrapuntal multi-part harmony thingy.
  5. I've got the Ketron K8 pedal board, I used them for a while to do bass pedals when I was in a Genesis trib (then I found a Moog Taurus I and traded up). I hooked up mine to a Novation Bass Station and they did a good - albeit basic - job. They sure don't have the heft of a Moog Taurus 3 so if your chap is heavy-footed, might be best to tape them down.
  6. The Museum of Music in Barcelona has a Ricky 4001 that's newer than my Ricky 4001. Which made me and my bass feel quite old
  7. (and indeed the rest of the album)
  8. I find Joe Dart's effects board needlessly over-complicated
  9. 4-string on the top, 8-string on the bottom. Admittedly blurry old-school camera photos don't help here
  10. Had one of these until a 3 or 4 years ago. Traded it in for another notable (but more for provenance than looks) - John Giblin's Takamine TB-10 that he used for Kate Bush's 'Before The Dawn' shows
  11. I've got something in my eye
  12. And my best advice is decide on the name before forming the band, so it doesn't get done by committee. Proof - my last band was called Velcro Pelmet (by committee and approx 1 million emails)
  13. Yes got their name because one of them thought short name = bigger letters on billboard outside gig It's than Mabel Greer's Toyshop anyway
  14. I used one a couple of days ago. A previous user had left some fairly valuable and easy-losable things in the room, so I got on the webchat (by phone) with someone at Pirate HQ. Ok, here's the code for the locker room. In there locker X is the lost property. Here's the combination for the padlock on that locker. I got into the locker room ok. However the code for the padlock didn't work. Given it was home time for me and the turnaround of the webchat wasn't massively quick, I had to stash the lost property in the room somewhere and let them know. The last reply from HQ was slightly panicky, but there you go for not having anyone on site. And don't ask my drummer about the kit quality. My Ashdown combo was ok but I set it all flat anyway.
  15. Aha. Thanks chaps. Yes my misconception/assumption is that I am "playing" the editor (having loaded up a preset) - assumption based on thinking that the MIDI out from the pedal into the interface being some kind of signal path that would make its way back to the editor, or out of the interface headphone socket. (As I said I am 100% newbie at this kind of thing). To be certain though - what should my settings be in the MIDI|Preferences dialog box?
  16. Ok, so now I'm updated, I'm having a fiddle with the editor. I've loaded a preset, and when I "play" the editor with the on-screen keyboard I don't hear anything. In the MIDI|Preferences dialog I've got FI Input Device and Output Device both set to "Quad Capture", Keyboard Input Device set to "off". When I set the Output Device to my normal Microsoft setting, I get a sound but it's a default piano sound. Any suggestions? Thanks!
  17. All sorted - starting the browser after connecting and powering up the pedal did the trick. Thanks! (can Roland Quad Capture be added to the list of tested interfaces now?) btw - confirmed regarding the keyboard symbol by the address bar when I go to the update page (which I guess is academic now that the update is complete)
  18. Thanks - After, the interface is already connected to my PC and powers up at PC startup time. Does the power-on time of the pedal (compared to browser start-up) make any difference? I'll have to check for the keyboard symbol next time, will advise accordingly.
  19. Thanks, I'm trying the Chrome updater. I've got as far as this, any idea what I should do now? I've got the pedal powered up and connected to the Quad Capture box by two MIDI leads.
