Which bassline inspired you to pick up the bass?
Just don't tell 'em! I could play it long before I knew what 7/8 was...
Unfortunately, I know a guy who still can't play it in time and he's been playing for 10 years... He also plays the intro to 'White Room' in 4/4. It's like he's stuck in it! I'm not saying 7/8 is potentially beyond any of the beginners, I just want to keep it simple because if i factor in a possible stumbling block (even a small one like an odd-time/compound time signatures/tricky rhythms etc) the chances are it will end up creating an issue. -
Isnt it called 'BashThat'?
I was going to suggest something from the Stranglers early period, but Bilbo beat me to it with Peaches..the 'kids' might even recognise it from Sexy Beast. How about Money by Floyd? or Word Up by Cameo?
Yeah, Stranglers is a good shout. I considered Money by Floyd, but felt 7/8 is probably not the kindest of things to introduce a total beginner to! -
Could we not have a minimum post count for selling but tweak it slightly. I.e. ONLY cash/trade on collection (in person) with a new member below a certain number of posts. Bank transfers/paypal/long-distance selling etc with members with over the post threshold for selling? Surely that way, newbies can still sell (or buy) but by doing it all in person, any of the obvious pitfalls (such as sending the item and then the payment not clearing, or the bass in trade never arriving etc) have been removed It would slightly restrict new members in what they could buy or sell to begin with, but it's only a small sacrifice and Im sure most honest new members would appreciate that. Just a thought!
I'm sure that the majority of people that will turn up (which I'm guessing will be mostly teenagers)will instantly recognise it and be inspired. I always find that a lot of people are impressed by ".....Teen Spirit". A simple 12 bar blues pattern (1,3,5,3) always goes down well too. Other than that,if you know lots of tunes it is easy to find something that they like and could play.
Yeah, I already had blues walking bass in my list, but its a bit predictable/boring/uninspiring. I also don't like doing it in isolation, because I think it helps to perpetuate the stereotype of 'blues has to sound like this *plays arpeggiated major triads*'... I think it's something that should be covered in a lesson within a series of lessons, so that you can explore breaking those rules once they've been laid out. I'd much rather have them playing an isolated song that they will go home thinking 'I want to listen to/play more of that!' Also, trying to find an alternative to the ever-popular Seven Nation Army! -
So, on the 31st of March 2012 it is national 'Learn To Play Day' (organised by 'Music for All'). The aim of the event is for individuals across the nation who have always wanted to pick up an instrument and learn to play, to get a free lesson at one of the places involved with event, on their preferred instrument without having to purchase one. A "taster" if you will. As part of this event, I will be holding a bass workshop for a small number of individuals who want to learn to play the bass. However, time is limited and I need to really figure out which bass part/s I can feasibly teach in the time allocated. Ideally, the bass line needs to be a riff/ostinato. While I can think of a few, I dont feel that they are the most inspiring and would really appreciate it if you guys could name a bass line that fits that criteria that really inspired YOU to pick up the bass! Any ideas? Hopefully, I can get a fair few and cater for all tastes (because there is bound to be one or two who say 'I dont like *insert prepared bass part*, have you not got something else?') TIA

Just got offered to play in Grease next week as someone dropped out and got a last minute call. Anyone got a PDF of the score that I could check over before rehearsals? I hate going into these kind of things and having to do all the markings etc as well as reading the dots for the first time. Thanks in advance!

I use Endsleigh and it's great. They give you the option to cite the exact details of your instruments (including mods) and you tell them the rough value. The protection covers all sorts of outcomes and my annual premium was just £45 for the year I know a friend who once claimed as his snare was stolen from the back of his open car boot when packing away after a gig and they paid out no problem. They used online comparison to find the cheapest price for the item based on his description in the documentation and gave him a cheque for the amount. Pretty straight forward really. However, he had paid 5 years of premiums at £50 without claiming, and I had paid for 4 years at £45 without claiming, so between us we'd pretty much paid for his new snare, so it was nice to see our money back when we needed it.

Finding *THE* bass - following from the 'end of GAS' topic...
True but in 1986, Wal was a new company and their basses were not being given away as part of a sponsorship deal (never were, if I am correct). Same with Eden; they were a new company back when I got my Eden. I say look at what your people actually use rather than the adverts. When I say 'if its good enough for them...' what I am actually suggesting is that mastering your instrument is only partially about the kit and more about your ears and mind. If your bass is, for want of a better word, 'good enough', why stress about that detail; spend some time on the music.
Too true. One of the main reasons I love my Geddy is because I learnt to play on it. I know it like the back of my hand and as a result, I can play without thinking about the technical side of things like positioning etc. That just leaves me free to think about what I want to say as a musician and although there are plenty of others that play a jazz/Geddy jazz, I can let my style come out through my playing, rather than a specific 'signature' tone (like some players aspire to) But each to their own! Everyone gets there by different roads and thats what makes music so diverse and interesting, so long may it continue! -
Commitment. That's all it takes. if its good enough for Gary Willis etc, its good enough for me. Everything else seems like chasing rainbows.
I agree with the first bit, it is about commitment and sticking with something and seeing it through. However, picking something to try based on other players is tricky and saying 'if it's good enough for X player then it's good enough for me' doesn't take into account the cynical nature of the business. Best example I can give us Mark King throwing his signature all over the expensive Ashdown Sig Head and then still sticking with his Trace for gigs. Players endorse and use gear for the money or because they get it free/cheap, which is totally different to me picking a bass to play. Would Wooten still play an expensive Fodera if he was just your average bedroom player with a normal, average salary job? Probably not. All I'm saying is, maybe a bit of experimentation is needed with instruments to find what you like if you don't have the cash to just splash out and buy all the gear your hero has. Plus, as we all know, its bloody good fun searching for 'the one' and makes it all the more special when you find it -
my singer said "You had no idea that was Herman Li and the keyboard player from Dragonforce did you".
To be fair, I would have been worse in that situation. A friend showed me a YouTube clip of Dragonforce ages ago where the guitarists are discussing an 'A major arpeggio with an added note' only to realise 5 mins later in the video that it's an Amaj7 arpeggio. I genuinely thought it was some kind of Spinal Tap comedy p!ss take. I would have ended up commending them for being such a great comedy band (and probably ended up with a punch) totally by accident! -
Good for you mate. I've been through exactly the same thing and I am also GAS free now. There are two basses left that I want to own one day, but that can wait a decade or two
I found the 62 and the Geddy very different basses. What are your thoughts.
I would have to agree. My Geddy is the bass I learnt to play on, so it's my reference for feel, quality and sound. It's like my third arm and I know it inside out/ back to front. However, I chose this because I wanted a jazz that I could fit with flats and had a rosewood fingerboard. I actively searched for jazz that I intended to contrast the Geddy (sound wise) and it certainly does that, whilst keeping the feel and quality of a Japanese Fender which I love because it's what I consider to be comfortable. Truly awesome bass and it's a definate keeper.

It's one tortoiseshell scratchplate away from perfection! Now I just need to find one (without paying Fender the ridiculous RRP price for the specific '62 RI scratchplate at £60!)
You actually play it? Perhaps I should put the laptop down and have a go at that myself! Just jealous
I practice 2 hours everyday except Thursday, without fail. However, new bass means intensive practice, just to get to know it
-
Well, the combination of my research and John's obvious experience in picking out great quality examples of Japanese Fenders has resulted in me being matched up with a truly perfect bass (for me!) Couldn't be happier and would recommend John very highly to any other basschatter. Off to play it... Again! Totalling about 20 hours of playing since it arrived on monday

Hopefully he'll see the 'Blur' (@ the Brits) thread and let Albarn read it and sort that mess out! P.s. Great to have another iconic bass player joining the ranks... Prepare for a scrabble when he starts posting in the 'for sale' section! -
5-string basses - how useful is the 5th string? POLL time, yay!
skej21 replied to Clarky's topic in Bass Guitars
Just got rid of last 5 string and have always found myself having one, then moving it on... Personally, I found it quite useful in a few situations (like drop tuning and for reading) but if I'm entirely honest with myself, in these situations 'quite useful' translates as 'accommodates my laziness'... In other words, I don't NEED a 5 string to read music or play the odd drop tune song, but a 5er took the effort out of tuning down or shifting position more often. That's why I've decided to stick with four strings for good, because I felt like this form of laziness was starting to affect my playing (found this when I had to do a reading gig on a four string for the first time in ages and there were one too many 'panic' moments when lots of shifting was involved!) I totally understand that it might not be the case with everyone, but it definitely is with me. -
How can you say a 56 P-Bass is ugly when you play a Status Kingbass Artist?
You're right... with opinions like that, he's clearly lost his head! I'll get my coat!
Disagree! Feast your eyes on this
My plan worked! I was hoping people would attempt to prove me wrong with some quality bass porn!
Pickguard looks a bit too shiny, going over it with wire wool will take the shine off and cover it in tiny scratches. But take it off the bass first or your pickups will forever be covered in iron filings!
Or you can use a brilo pad! Does the same job but you don't get iron filings everywhere

It's getting delivered to work, so might have to wait until lunch break to try it out... Super excited and on paper should be perfect for me.
