Jazz v. Precision Bass- question from [relative] newbie
skej21 replied to barnettiuk's topic in Bass Guitars
+1 to what Ed said. I think the factors in such a decision these days are probably quite limited. With a larger range of options (such as Fender modern players and black tops alongside classic p & j configurations) you can pick a stock model that has the pups you want with the body shape you want and the colour scheme you want. So after that probably; price, neck radius and MAYBE string-spacing/hardware would be the few deciding factors. -
Or 'one lady owner - vicar's wife'...
That's probably the cheapest Clutterbuck gag I've seen on here

Also, the 'never been gigged' line as well! I've seen studio basses in awful condition that have 'never been gigged' and basses that have been ruined by the owners dog/cat/children that have also 'never been gigged'. Just be truthful, tell us if it's in good condition or not (regardless of where it has or hasn't been) and then let us decide if the condition is suitable for us, instead of trying to make a selling point out of something that is irrelevant. It's a sale on a forum, not the friggin' Apprentice! Next we'll be seeing 'never been played by a guitarist' in sale blurb
Last gig I saw had a concert band with full kit and orchestral bass drum, and a full set of timps too. The difference in sound is unreal, an orchestral bass drum really desevers the name bass, its 'kin HUGE compared to a namby pamby kick drum, the orchestral drum wasnt even going through the PA, and it dominated the room. Tone, instead of timbre, which is just a 'better' word for it - so there! "Compression kills dynamics" - no it doesnt, not ever, thats like saying "guns kill people" - they dont people (mis)using guns kill people, like people mis-using compressors kills dynamics. Usually stated by people who have absolutely no idea whatsoever about how compressors work, what they sound like, how to really set one up etc etc. Boils my p*** dry in moments. And relax.......
Funny that we both agree that orchestral percussion should be named a 'bass' drum, yet you somehow manage to place me in the firing line for your rant... I might just stop posting if I get ranted at when people AGREE! As for the compressor thing, I didn't even mention compressors :s Basschat sebatical for me I think :s
TAKE IT TO THE BRIDGE HUUHHH only JB gets away with that one
I prefer that kind of direction to the 'i can't communicate what I want to say musically' approach. For example; 'let's play that bit near the end again before and that other bit... You know, the bit that's not the chorusy bit or the other bit... I don't know what the notes/chords are for that bit, I just learnt the tab!'
Strike two...
Shouldn't it be strike four? I thought drummers can only cope if its in four
A 'Bass' Drum generally refers to the largest drum in an orchestra.
True, but it's VERY rare to be in an orchestra that has percussion including said 'bass' drum AND a drum kit, so it's very rare that such a distinction is needed... Personally, I think you're right though. The drum on a kit should be referred to as a 'kick' drum. Also makes things easier when you're labelling up the PA and/or recording desk because you can have 'bass' and 'kick'... To conclude. Drummers are idiots!
Go on, name the shop. That way people can avoid it and reward the good shops with their business.
I'm going to guess it was Sounds Live? Wouldn't suprise me. I once went in there when buying my first bass. I had £1000 in cash to spend and as I walked through the door I overheard one of the guys whisper to a colleague 'another kid coming to try his luck on an expensive instrument!'... I asked to try a Warwick (which in hindsight would NOT have been the bass for me anyway!) and the guy said 'Take your belt off and you can. We don't want it scratching the bass, because we've got to sell it at some point'... I didn't say a word and just walked out. Went up to GuitarGuitar and bought a Geddy. Walked back down to Sounds Live and had a look around with new bass in hand. The guy who had previously been a total tool even had the cheek to say "So, what you been buying then?".... I appreciate that in the grand scheme of things, a sub-£1000 sale doesn't make much difference to that kind of shop, but that was money in his competitors till and he still didn't even seem to care when I told him what I'd bought just up the road and he realised I would have been up for buying the Warwick.

Price reduction: Aguilar Tone Hammer - SOLD!
skej21 replied to Gunsfreddy2003's topic in Effects For Sale
Dude, to my knowledge, prices should not be discussed in public like that. Any issues should be adressed via PM. Forum rules if i remember ok...
Prices should be discussed via PM if the you want to challenge the price with the seller. I, however, was responding to seller's question 'is this priced too high...' in a previous post in order to try and give the seller some feedback in an attempt to try and aid the sale of the item. No offence or harm intended to the seller/sale. -
Pretty much this. I can only speak for myself, but when I'm playing I'm not thinking "A7...A,C#,E,G" or whatever. I've spent enough time studying and playing that I know how the chords are constructed and how to recognise II-V-I and that kind of thing so I can just get on with playing without consciously thinking about every detail. Of course there are times, usually when I'm soloing, where I might think "Oooh,I can play this really cool Lydian lick I've been practising",but generally I don't want to be thinking about every little detail.
I agree. I liken playing jazz (musically) to reading words. At the start, you break everything down (I.e C-a-t) and then gradually you start seeing words rather than letters and eventually, not just the words but the context too. That's when you can start adding creativity, when you can see the bigger picture. It's also the reason why musicians often view music as an expressive language. There are a lot of similarities. Similarly the idea of remembering a set of music is similar to an actor memorising a script and being able to add their own spin to something that has been done before. It's a different kind of creativity in that context IMO, although I do think that both are skills that can be taught/learnt. The spark of creativity is what sets the true jazz legends apart from the everyday jazz player.
