1. Had a mate with a Shuker and it was stunning... but reading this i'd go nowhere near for a build. Taking so long and poor communication would be bad enough but delaying AFTER all of that is even worse. He should be breaking his balls to keep you sweet, especially considering you're a repeat customer. My worry would be if he's like that with you, how poor is his service for new customers?
 2.
Yes, that's a fair point and I know what you mean (I think). I may not be explaining myself very well. Perhaps the problem is that the drummer is following me rather than being in the driving seat? I've not experienced this before and it doesn't feel comfortable.
Sometimes its nice to be in control of where things are going
 3.
Be prepared for an avalanche of Fender/Squire/Warwick recommendations...
Get a Dingwall!
 4.
I love precision tone but moved to a jazz because I found that the P tended to fall back in the mix as I went up the neck. with the jazz you lose a bit of low end balls but get more focus and power higher up.
+1 I have solved this problem by having my 2nd Jazz fitted with flats!
 5. Acceptable? Probably. Worth the risk of not getting a call back for the next job? Definitely not.
 6. I still say Ah-ghee-lar either way lol Moot point!
 7.
Is it acceptable for a pro musician to drink?
Can of worms officially opened!
 8.
I thought that only the double L group ("ll") is pronounced "yah". Single L is pronounced just L, like in Barcelona, Valencia, albondigas, oloroso, etc. I still think it's Ah ghee lar
You get the 'yah' with double LL or if the 'L' is followed by an 'A', which is not the case in your examples (Barcelona, Valencia, albondigas, oloroso, etc) It's Ah-ghee-yah
 9.
I thought Aguilar is pronounced Ah-ghee-lar, like it would be in spanish
In spanish, it would be Ah-ghee-yah... Like David Villa is pronounced Vee-yah because the 'la' is a 'yah' sound.
 10.
I think Flea inspired me to start playing bass, but I got really enthusiastic for it when I learned "Lounge Act" by Nirvana it was the first song I thought myself and I still think it's a great bass line.
Lounge Act was probably a similar inspiration for me. I remember hearing that just thinking 'why the f**k would anybody want to play anything else when a bass can sound like that?!' I still feel that now when I hear it!
 11. With reading. It's a real thrill to turn up not really knowing what your fingers will be playing, and then leaving at the end of the night having played a load of music you've never played before without making any mistakes... And playing alongside musicians you've never met or met a limited number of times.
 12. If its gone under, does that mean someone can upload the Pino interview for those of us who just recently signed up and couldn't get the back issues?
 13.
Just a bit of fun for a Friday. Last night, some nut Dingwalled the Fender on my car, a pickup. I let out a deep Sei, but didn't fret too much. I had to walk back home. I had to cross Overwater but luckily there was a bridge. After a Sterling effort by the police, they found the guy, and he's up in Cort on Monday.
Corrected
 14.
I wish I knew, I play guitar not,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Dare I say it,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, bass
Who knows, now you've got a nice bass, you might finally be able to step up and play a real instrument!
 15. As bass players, we have to wear our basses high... how else will the women-folk inspect our junk and decide between us or the drummer?!
 16.
I can see this getting out of control! Basschat Drumchat Guitarchat Keychat Fiddlechat Singchat Rapchat Brasschat
That sounds like it is most definitely a forum that would not be suitable for work!
 17.
Just don't tell 'em! I could play it long before I knew what 7/8 was...
Unfortunately, I know a guy who still can't play it in time and he's been playing for 10 years... He also plays the intro to 'White Room' in 4/4. It's like he's stuck in it! I'm not saying 7/8 is potentially beyond any of the beginners, I just want to keep it simple because if i factor in a possible stumbling block (even a small one like an odd-time/compound time signatures/tricky rhythms etc) the chances are it will end up creating an issue.
 18. Isnt it called 'BashThat'?
 19.
I was going to suggest something from the Stranglers early period, but Bilbo beat me to it with Peaches..the 'kids' might even recognise it from Sexy Beast. How about Money by Floyd? or Word Up by Cameo?
Yeah, Stranglers is a good shout. I considered Money by Floyd, but felt 7/8 is probably not the kindest of things to introduce a total beginner to!
 20. Could we not have a minimum post count for selling but tweak it slightly. I.e. ONLY cash/trade on collection (in person) with a new member below a certain number of posts. Bank transfers/paypal/long-distance selling etc with members with over the post threshold for selling? Surely that way, newbies can still sell (or buy) but by doing it all in person, any of the obvious pitfalls (such as sending the item and then the payment not clearing, or the bass in trade never arriving etc) have been removed It would slightly restrict new members in what they could buy or sell to begin with, but it's only a small sacrifice and Im sure most honest new members would appreciate that. Just a thought!
 21.
I'm sure that the majority of people that will turn up (which I'm guessing will be mostly teenagers)will instantly recognise it and be inspired. I always find that a lot of people are impressed by ".....Teen Spirit". A simple 12 bar blues pattern (1,3,5,3) always goes down well too. Other than that,if you know lots of tunes it is easy to find something that they like and could play.
Yeah, I already had blues walking bass in my list, but its a bit predictable/boring/uninspiring. I also don't like doing it in isolation, because I think it helps to perpetuate the stereotype of 'blues has to sound like this *plays arpeggiated major triads*'... I think it's something that should be covered in a lesson within a series of lessons, so that you can explore breaking those rules once they've been laid out. I'd much rather have them playing an isolated song that they will go home thinking 'I want to listen to/play more of that!' Also, trying to find an alternative to the ever-popular Seven Nation Army!
 22. So, on the 31st of March 2012 it is national 'Learn To Play Day' (organised by 'Music for All'). The aim of the event is for individuals across the nation who have always wanted to pick up an instrument and learn to play, to get a free lesson at one of the places involved with event, on their preferred instrument without having to purchase one. A "taster" if you will. As part of this event, I will be holding a bass workshop for a small number of individuals who want to learn to play the bass. However, time is limited and I need to really figure out which bass part/s I can feasibly teach in the time allocated. Ideally, the bass line needs to be a riff/ostinato. While I can think of a few, I dont feel that they are the most inspiring and would really appreciate it if you guys could name a bass line that fits that criteria that really inspired YOU to pick up the bass! Any ideas? Hopefully, I can get a fair few and cater for all tastes (because there is bound to be one or two who say 'I dont like *insert prepared bass part*, have you not got something else?') TIA
 23. Just got offered to play in Grease next week as someone dropped out and got a last minute call. Anyone got a PDF of the score that I could check over before rehearsals? I hate going into these kind of things and having to do all the markings etc as well as reading the dots for the first time. Thanks in advance!
 24. I use Endsleigh and it's great. They give you the option to cite the exact details of your instruments (including mods) and you tell them the rough value. The protection covers all sorts of outcomes and my annual premium was just £45 for the year I know a friend who once claimed as his snare was stolen from the back of his open car boot when packing away after a gig and they paid out no problem. They used online comparison to find the cheapest price for the item based on his description in the documentation and gave him a cheque for the amount. Pretty straight forward really. However, he had paid 5 years of premiums at £50 without claiming, and I had paid for 4 years at £45 without claiming, so between us we'd pretty much paid for his new snare, so it was nice to see our money back when we needed it.
 25.
True but in 1986, Wal was a new company and their basses were not being given away as part of a sponsorship deal (never were, if I am correct). Same with Eden; they were a new company back when I got my Eden. I say look at what your people actually use rather than the adverts. When I say 'if its good enough for them...' what I am actually suggesting is that mastering your instrument is only partially about the kit and more about your ears and mind. If your bass is, for want of a better word, 'good enough', why stress about that detail; spend some time on the music.
Too true. One of the main reasons I love my Geddy is because I learnt to play on it. I know it like the back of my hand and as a result, I can play without thinking about the technical side of things like positioning etc. That just leaves me free to think about what I want to say as a musician and although there are plenty of others that play a jazz/Geddy jazz, I can let my style come out through my playing, rather than a specific 'signature' tone (like some players aspire to) But each to their own! Everyone gets there by different roads and thats what makes music so diverse and interesting, so long may it continue!
