$24k for a bit of wood with strings on isn't the real world.
you sound like my mam.

have you had a look at the barefaced range? ive seen a couple of midgets go for 300ish but i'd much rather hold out and get a super12 instead of 2x1x12 cabs.

i'm using a trace v-type amp and loving it. The valves that are in there at the moment are stamped "TE trace elliot hand picked and matched" and i presume these are the originals that came off the production line in may '96. i'm a complete valve noob and know nothing about what a new set can change about the amp. there isnt anything wrong with the valves in there (a duet of 12ax7a's) but i'm wondering if there is anything to gain from an upgraded set. if anything, i'd like a bit of extra top end bite in my sound as i seem to be running the treble at max alot of the time. so my question is what gains (pun intended) can i get from various types of valves and what should i go for? the amp apparently has a fender tone stack if thats helpful.
-
(just had to pick up my bass and have a go to see what i did) i mostly just bar it with my ring finger but have built alot more strength in my little finger lately and have been using it more and more, wouldn't be surprised if i swayed that way in the future.

Head for a Barefaced Super Twelve T - Which one?
Surely the people in these 'very loud doom bands' are using a chuffing ENORMOUS PA to create the 'volume singularity'(tm)* fix they need? In which case huge stage volume is utter pants anyway.... * 'volume singularity'(tm) = A noise so immensely loud that you are unable to perceive anything else around you - it 'sucks in' all other sound
on the contrary, in old friend of mine was in a (imo utter crap) was in a hardcore / sludge / whatever band and they where seriously loud but didnt even have a pa system... the singer used a marshall half stack for vocals... it was as bad as you imagine. -

if you could stretch the budget a little further, you could get the obligatory terror bass, vintage tone in lumps the size of a house. there have also been alot of good things said about the hartke lh500 which is in the budget, though i can't vouch for it myself. -
i have the same train of thought as you, i'd much rather have the ability to add an extra cab to the mix if i needed it than get slightly more power into one cab.
-
i'm not sure, if the "link" port is wired in series (power running thru 1 cab then the other) then yeah, that'll work. but if its in parallel (power devided between the 2 cabs) then no, it won't work.
-
with 2 4 ohm cabs you kind of have the same problem. used normally (a lead from the amp going to each cab) it will present a load of 2 ohms which is too few for the amp. you can run them in series to get a load of 8 ohms, but that means having to get a special speaker lead and also you won't be getting as much power out of your amp as if you have a 4ohm load.
-
i've never seen a 2 ohm cab before, only ever 4 or 8 ohm cabs. if that actually are 2 ohms then you would have to have a series cable made up so that together they present a load of 4ohms together. if you ran these cabs normally, or even one at a time, you'd be exceeding the minimum load and could blow up your amp. i'd have another check though because i very much doubt they're 2ohms each.

i think its time to let this one die now, as it should have done around page 5 -
i think the cooling system must work well enough because my amp has never felt hot after running at almost full tilt. ive even ran the head without a case and the heat sinks are just about warm to the touch after being run at a decent volume for about half an hour, they must have done something right.
for me i think a wal would do it. I've never heard a bad sound come out of a wal.
i take that back, the best bass that money can buy is a bass that only cost me materials. one that i build with my own 2 hands.

for me i think a wal would do it. I've never heard a bad sound come out of a wal.

love the look of the green one and the quilted one, both very different but both great.

it'd be pretty easy to solder in a small variable resistor so you can control the fan speed
-
ive got a v-type head open next to me and its exactly the same as you describe. I'm making myself an aluminium headcase for it so i might have a go at making some slots for extra air flow.
-
it looks fine to me apart from the fact it doesn't seem to be aged at all. the musicmaster headstocks just look weird and disproportionate anyway IMO.
-
i'm seriously thinking of taking up bass lessons. Even though i've been playing about five years and i'm not a bad player, i don't know any theory at all and feel that this holds me back in terms of writing and improv.

i think you misinterpret "telling me i was talking sh*te" for an opposing opinion. some people have them. -
So you get the exact full tube sound of an svt 2 pro with that? Bullshit. Go get a line 6 lowdown, they do ampeg too!

Anyone who knows what they're talking about like to add a comment?
still wondering why you ruffled feathers? with first posts like that. -
I disagree sir. Everyone notices. Many won't care as you obviously don't, but they'll notice. I saw a local band who all used little combo amps, the bass player had a one speaker amp, and they sounded really bad. The PA engineer described his job as, 'trying to polish a turd'!
\none of us are saying that a small combo amp is as good as a fully blow pro bass rig. this debate is about solid state vs. ampeg svt2-pro i for instance use an old trace 15 and even older 80's marshall 4x10 with a dreaded hybrid head, it is by no means a polished turd or weedy. it serves my purposes perfectly, it might not be exactly the tone in my head, but that tone is in my head, no-one elses. -

so yeah, i'd love to have a nice big tube amp head. not an svt2-pro i'd rather have either a marshall vba400 or a matamp... but i just don't have a. the money or b. the room for them. Ar you prejudiced against those less fortunate? nazi? Anyway for a working musician, having a more lightweight setup pays. Theres no point in me carting a fridge and 3 ton amp into every small pub and club that i play when half the power and speakers would suffice. Anyway i feel that my v-type preamp gets pretty close to the tone i have in my head, it may not be perfect, but its only me who will ever notice. -
