1. what is the general consensus about 18's? i know big pa subs all use them and they'll have bot all treble, but i just can't imagine them doing anything but create muffled, boomy horribleness.
2. to save people searching i never realised ampeg ever actually made something unusual / unique!
3. well having 350w through more speakers, you will get more volume than 500w through one cab.... however if the songle cab is bigger / higher spl than what you are using at the moment, then it would be louder, but not much louder than if you were running 250 watts into it.
4. welcome, i'm starting uni this months too, also looking forward to my loans / bursaries to come through.... i know where they'll be going.
5. you can't get much more punk than a big, heavy, cheap but groundshaking peavey or trace elliot 2x15 with a peavey mkIV or old trace head to match. If you don't mind the bulk, theres some amazing deals to be had for some real quality gear.
6. i have a maple fretless (well maple / sapele /maple sandwich) and its great, don't see why there arn't more around. as long as they're properly coated imo they look and sound better than rw.
7. well at the moment its just the pickup wired to a jack because of some pillock managing to break a pot while the bass was stored for examination. but while it was all working it was great, my first venture into fretless so i can't really compare it to much but i was really impressed by the amount of variation in tone of the p-bass circuit, all my other basses are active and i didn't expect that. the pickup is in the bridge position and it can get really bright if thats what you're after.
8. an AB box with volume controlls would work a treat, but you could also use a booster pedal to boost the volume of the jazz.
9. as far as i know, theres nothing to stop you from using an MM style pickup, active and passive pickups work just the same, its just the circuits they're attached to that makes a difference. infact for my a-level project i made a bass with an mm pickup but p-bass passive tone circuit.
10.
$24k for a bit of wood with strings on isn't the real world.
you sound like my mam.
11. have you had a look at the barefaced range? ive seen a couple of midgets go for 300ish but i'd much rather hold out and get a super12 instead of 2x1x12 cabs.
12. i'm using a trace v-type amp and loving it. The valves that are in there at the moment are stamped "TE trace elliot hand picked and matched" and i presume these are the originals that came off the production line in may '96. i'm a complete valve noob and know nothing about what a new set can change about the amp. there isnt anything wrong with the valves in there (a duet of 12ax7a's) but i'm wondering if there is anything to gain from an upgraded set. if anything, i'd like a bit of extra top end bite in my sound as i seem to be running the treble at max alot of the time. so my question is what gains (pun intended) can i get from various types of valves and what should i go for? the amp apparently has a fender tone stack if thats helpful.

14. (just had to pick up my bass and have a go to see what i did) i mostly just bar it with my ring finger but have built alot more strength in my little finger lately and have been using it more and more, wouldn't be surprised if i swayed that way in the future.
15. i don't know why id didnt think of this earlier, used to love this song. horrible quality
16.
Surely the people in these 'very loud doom bands' are using a chuffing ENORMOUS PA to create the 'volume singularity'(tm)* fix they need? In which case huge stage volume is utter pants anyway.... * 'volume singularity'(tm) = A noise so immensely loud that you are unable to perceive anything else around you - it 'sucks in' all other sound
on the contrary, in old friend of mine was in a (imo utter crap) was in a hardcore / sludge / whatever band and they where seriously loud but didnt even have a pa system... the singer used a marshall half stack for vocals... it was as bad as you imagine.
17. if you could stretch the budget a little further, you could get the obligatory terror bass, vintage tone in lumps the size of a house. there have also been alot of good things said about the hartke lh500 which is in the budget, though i can't vouch for it myself.
18. i have the same train of thought as you, i'd much rather have the ability to add an extra cab to the mix if i needed it than get slightly more power into one cab.
19. i'm not sure, if the "link" port is wired in series (power running thru 1 cab then the other) then yeah, that'll work. but if its in parallel (power devided between the 2 cabs) then no, it won't work.
20. with 2 4 ohm cabs you kind of have the same problem. used normally (a lead from the amp going to each cab) it will present a load of 2 ohms which is too few for the amp. you can run them in series to get a load of 8 ohms, but that means having to get a special speaker lead and also you won't be getting as much power out of your amp as if you have a 4ohm load.
21. i've never seen a 2 ohm cab before, only ever 4 or 8 ohm cabs. if that actually are 2 ohms then you would have to have a series cable made up so that together they present a load of 4ohms together. if you ran these cabs normally, or even one at a time, you'd be exceeding the minimum load and could blow up your amp. i'd have another check though because i very much doubt they're 2ohms each.
22. i think its time to let this one die now, as it should have done around page 5
23. i think the cooling system must work well enough because my amp has never felt hot after running at almost full tilt. ive even ran the head without a case and the heat sinks are just about warm to the touch after being run at a decent volume for about half an hour, they must have done something right.
24.
for me i think a wal would do it. I've never heard a bad sound come out of a wal.
i take that back, the best bass that money can buy is a bass that only cost me materials. one that i build with my own 2 hands.
