I think Rivers is a tasteful player and I enjoy his melodic lines.

'Whatever fits the song' is my motto. Although I do agree with the thought that most of the sound comes from your fingers. It can be smooth, funky, staccato, growly and have a sharp attack. Use what you're comfortable with too.

Very interesting read, I can see Thunes' side but I agree with Kiwi that he sounds bitter and unfulfilled.

I'd like to play some funk and form/join a funk-oriented band. I'm not that accustomed to funk bass, but I do love some Jamiroquai stuff. Can you guys recommend some more funk bands for me? I know Jamiroquai can be regarded as acid jazz back in the day or pop nowadays but whatever Also, I'd like some tips on what makes a good funk bass player, and advice about bassline construction: what scales do you guys use, etc. I don't post on here often enough, so thanks in advance Carl

There is no kudos for playing well in a music shop. The whole point of being there is to eye up and try new basses/ guitars, so there's no need for extravagant or over the top playing in my opinion. Keep it simple, get a feel for the bass, check the fretwork, neck, body and paint, sustain and judge how its sound will fit into your band/ project.

Got my Spector in January 2008, bought some strings later that year. Errr... That's it. This year will be much better, I've got my eyes on a US Fender Jazz. I've said that for nearly 2 years now.. god..

Just the two, crappy Hartke first bass and my Spector Legend 4. I'm thinking about going for an American Fender Jazz or a Geddy Lee. A Lakland 55-01 perhaps too..

I think it's mainly because of the distinctive Warwick growl. Like you said Josh, there are too many generalisations here, surely Warwicks suit the metal genre sound-wise otherwise they wouldn't be so popular? I think its similar with Spectors, they both cut through very well due to their dominant mids.

I didn't turn up, as I'm not familiar with a lot of AC/DC stuff, especially for a 3 hour set! Glad they weren't disappointing.

Thanks your your replies, there's some interesting views. I think I'll just adapt my bass playing to rock or metal or compromise, and play funk metal, haha, like RATM or something.

Hi, I've not been here for a while but I thought I'd visit. I have a bit of an issue at the moment, and others may feel the same too, so here goes: I listen to mostly metal and hard rock: Megadeth, Metallica, Maiden, etc, and I absolutely love listening to it. Now, when it comes to playing it, I just don't get the same joy out of it. It's the same if I write my own metal song. I don't listen to funk or blues, but often, that's what I enjoy playing. For example, I just love to funk out or improvise over the blues scale. Yet I wouldn't usually listen to this stuff. Anyone else have this problem? I feel it's because the bass is more prominent in the latter genres, but not so much in metal (Ok, Maiden and Megadeth may be exceptions What do you guys reckon?

I have the same mixed feelings about genres. One minute I can be playing thrash metal and loving it. Next I move to prog rock. Next I move to funk, next to reggae, etc. I like too many genres, and I don't know which to settle on.
