1. ...errr...back from continental Europe to take a look. I can see that my original post could be construed as a somewhat crude double entendre - my sincere apologies to anybody who may have been offended. It is a very beautiful bass indeed - alas one too many strings for me
2.
Gimme a couple of weeks and I should be able to write a much better comparison as I hope to have one of each of these to try out back to back
You're my hero!
3. Jump on this, it's beautiful and at a giveaway price. Balance and ergonomics are brilliant and the bass feels fairly light. It's also genuinely as new and looks beautiful!
4.
Calling lozbass!
I'm coming...
5. Wow, that's a stunner - possibly the nicest I've seen...I can feel a trip to Sainsbury's car park coming on...
6. I spent a thoroughly enjoyable half hour with Mark (Bass Culture) yesterday morning as we conducted a bit of business re: a TE head. What can I say - an absolute gent and the easiest and most pleasant of sales. Mark even took his Saturday morning to come over and collect the amp and listen to my pointless drivel. The reminiscences left me misty-eyed - I'm now looking up some of the bands we discussed and feeling a warm glow. Back to the point - Mark could not have been more helpful and accommodating - his prompt action and friendly communications ensured an entirely hassle free and enjoyable deal. I would have no hesitation in recommending him wholeheartedly to any and all in Basschat and beyond. Thanks Mark - a brilliant deal and great to have a chance to talk.
7.
Is it me - or are there some really amazing basses up for sale at the moment ????? Good luck Clarky !
I don't think it is you, there really are some stunning basses up at the moment!
8. Bump and thanks for the very kind posts and PMs. Andy, if I get a chance, I'll whiz it into the shop. Cheers, lozbass
9. Now SOLD - thanks to all for the comments and enquiries No hyperbole here - it is what it is and I expect that anybody with serious interest will have lots of questions. Just some basic details: Alleva Coppolo LG4 in 3 tone sunburst Serial 0048 (the last bass to be despatched from Jimmy's New York shop in June 2008 as far as I know) Nitro finish in excellent condition - the bass could almost pass for new Alder two-piece body Dalbergia Negra board (old cut, old growth - supply now exhausted - $1500 upcharge) Hipshot drop-tuner (E) AC pickups (in-house wind) AC two-band circuit (in-house build) Vol, Vol (with pull for passive), Passive Tone (operational in passive and active mode), Treble, Bass AC bent plate bridge Supplied in almost new Hiscox EBS case (one small impression in the valance at the bottom - arrived new with this) The bass pre-dates current AC nomenclature but would be classified as 'classic supreme' if built today (or possibly custom as it has the DN board). Please see the AC site for further details of timbers, options and build philosophy etc. http://www.allevacoppolo.com/ The bass is almost unblemished but has been played. On opening the case, it looks new. Very careful inspection will reveal a few very minor surface marks and natural maturation of the nitro finish. Playability is IMO (and that of some knowledgeable and experienced professionals) superb. The bass was set-up and given a light fret-stone about six weeks ago by Martin at the Gallery. The action is currently very low. During a previous set-up, a micro crack became evident in the neck cavity on the G side. Martin glued this and it is now entirely stable and invisible (stability was checked by Martin during the last set-up). The crack was probably caused by an extremely tight neck joint (characteristic of AC basses). Martin carefully sanded a very small amount of lacquer from the butt-end of the neck and now it fits extremely snugly but without danger of causing further cracks. The problem was very minor, I simply want to ensure complete disclosure - this is a very expensive bass. Interested parties may wish to check with Martin/Alex. I'm selling this as I have two AC LG4s (both with DN boards) and I'm trying to be more realistic - I really don't need two. The one that I'm selling is the better player (the other is awaiting a fret-stone but I expect it to be just as good as the 3TS). The price of £2850 is firm - I have well over £3k in the bass and don't really need to sell it (indeed, keeping it would be no hardship). Anybody with a serious interest is strongly encouraged to come and try the bass in central Manchester. I can ship to UK, Europe and the US at the buyer's expense (and with professional packaging) - pickup is an option of course. My availability will be very limited in the w/c 30th August but better thereafter (I'm around this weekend too). There's some discussion of the bass on TB - apparently, Jimmy Coppolo holds the instrument in very high regard. Images will be posted here later - for now please take a look at the images in BC Gear Porn (please note, the colour appears to be over-saturated to me - the sunburst is more subdued and classy than it appears here): http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=50923&st=80 (posts 83-88 offer images and further details) Cheers, Lozbass
10. Now SOLD - thanks Black, 3u rack bag - almost unused. Heavy duty woven nylon outer over wooden frame and panels. Large pocket on top, stiff panels in front and back lids, heavy duty zips, woven carry handle and shoulder strap - includes rack bolts (but not nuts - these weren't supplied - maybe use self-tapping bolts?) Manufacturer unknown. Very good condition - almost unused. Given the value, this isn't really worth posting, so collection only from central Manchester - £15 (donation to Basschat) Cheers, Lozbass
11.
Is this still available. Many thanks Neil
Thanks Neil - sorry, this is now sold subject to payment etc.
12. It looks like a very nice and very well-built bass - good price too - good luck!
13.
Any idea how much this weighs?
Thanks for asking Mark (I should have included this information in my initial post) - the amp weighs 31.5lbs. It's not a lightweight but it's not ridiculous. It's actually pretty easy to handle - the sleeve has a very strong sprung (steel) flightcase handle on one end in order that the amp can be carried like a slim briefcase. It has heavy rubber feet on the bottom and smaller rubber feet on the end/side opposite the handle. It can stored easily either flat or upright.
14. 'Been to a couple - being based in Manchester, it's easy - but last year finished it for me. A fairly pedestrian affair IMO with cacophonous and largely artless slap from start to finish. The only high points for me were Bell (a drummer!) and seeing BC's 4000 (unusual but brilliant and intense technique) and a few other BC friends
15. It sounds like you're sorted, but if there's a problem, I live fairly close to Wigan - if the cabs can be dropped off in Central Manchester, I can have them packed and despatched by Mail Boxes etc. (I'd pick them up but I don't drive).
16. It's great to hear of such customer service from a bespoke builder. I have nothing but good things to say about Wizard - I had a pair in a Sei J and they were remarkably good (certainly preferable to Barts for me)
17. Thanks Purpolaris - these do indeed have an massive amount of headroom (and the classic TE tone and cut-through)...Bump
18. The Danelectro is now SOLD - thanks to all for the enquiries and comments
19. The Scott is now sold - thanks for all the comments and enquiries
20.
Headstock design is common to all AC's - something to do with resonance and reducing dead spots
and it works!
21. Hi all, thanks for the very positive comments! This has generated a lot of interest and I think that a deal is close. On the tone question, the bass does have a nice single coil Jazz sound - it gets pretty honky and aggressive when panned to the bridge pickup but retains a modern edge (it's more pokey and less mellow than a '60s style J - certainly more modern sounding than an AC LG4 which is all I have for reference). Bags of sustain and a general 'quality' sound - it's powerful, present and solid in passive mode.
22. This is genuinely a stunning bass and can easily pass for new! The board was just too wide for me. I can also state with confidence that Nobody's Prefect is an extremely honest member of the BC community - you can have full confidence in any transactions.
23.
can you explain what you mean saying "Control plate is not cut from the mahogany body"?
PMs answered and, in answer to the question above, the control cover plate doesn't appear to be made from the piece of wood that would have been left following routing for the cavity (as is the case with, for example, Sei basses). It appears that the control cover is made from a piece of timber that closely resembles the mahogany body (but may not be mahogany). You can see a slight difference in colour in one of the images - the plate appears to be a little proud in the image but is pretty much flush in reality (I hadn't screwed it back fully when taking photographs of the circuit). I hope this helps.
24. Now sold - thanks for all the comments and enquiries More from the clear-out: This is a Scott Handmade modern Jazz style 4 with the following features: 34" scale - 24 frets Narrow neck (slender J profile) - maple with thick rosewood board (abalone front dots, brass side dots) Brass nut - 1.5" String spacing at nut - 9.5mm; at bridge - 19mm Deep slotted neck (glued I think) Mahogany body with nicely figured quilt maple drop top Wood plate over control route Tall post tuners Schaller 3D 4 bridge 2 band active circuit Controls: vol, pan, treble bass (but see below) Fender nickel rounds (light gauge) The good: Lovely low action - great set-up and extremely playable Feels, plays and sounds like a good boutique bass Looks cool Very comfortable - excellent balance Great passive tone - modern and aggressive with plenty of weight - very even across the strings The less good: Some light marks, scratches (on the back) and general playwear Control plate is not cut from the mahogany body Circuit is not currently operational - this could be a simple solder job or something more complicated - I just don't know (pull up the volume pot for passive operation - the bass is silent with the volume pot pushed down) I don't know who built the circuit (any ideas?) or the pickups (I've not taken them out) The G tuner is slightly bent (i.e., the fork that holds the elephant ear is not sufficiently tight and the tuner can vibrate - I've stuck a piece of paper in there but a bit of solder or a pin would provide a more permanent solution) The story: Please note - I have absolutely no independent verification of this story and I'm not attempting to sell the bass on the back of it (somebody may know more - any ideas, please let me know) On buying the bass (ebay) I was told that it was originally built by Peter Scott for Mark King (and to the latter's spec) in the '90s - however, it stayed in Scott's hands and was given to the previous owner as part payment of a debt. The bass was then used by 'Bad Habits' and appears in some of that band's videos. Peter Scott: It's been difficult to track Scott down - he has worked in Switzerland with Rolf Spuler (guitar designer) and possibly still does. From what I've heard of him, he's somewhat elusive and err...unusual. The only links I have are the following: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l9n3EMrhYn4...;feature=search - Scott playing one of his own Hammerhead basses (possibly the bass used by Patrice's bassplayer - there are videos of this on the web) http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?act=attach...st&id=30731 - see page 21 for details of Scott's luthiery So, in sum...a very nicely made boutique bass in good condition - great player, cool looks and solid, funky, modern tone. Some playwear, a damaged (fixable?) circuit, and a damaged (fixable?) machine head. I paid around £360 for the bass around a year ago and have had a lot of fun with it - I simply need to reduce the amount of gear that I have lying around. I'm looking for £290 for it now. It can be collected from Manchester or I can ship to the UK for £15 (I don't have a case but the bass will be well packed). Any questions, just let me know. If you know anything more about the bass or the builder, I'd be very grateful.
